Day 2 Wraps Up, 81 Players Remain

Jimmie Guinther
Jimmie Guinther

It was all about the money on Day 2 in the City of Angels for the 2010 PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Los Angeles Main Event. When play began on Sunday afternoon, 314 players returned to action after the remaining fields from the two starting days combined. After seven 75-minute levels of play and the bursting of the money bubble, 81 players were left standing to move on to Day 3. Topping them all is Jimmie Guinther with 894,000 in chips. Not too far behind him is Travis Pearson with 835,000.

With 314 players returning, more than two thirds of them would fall short of the money, which was set to pay out 104 places. Finishing on the bubble in 105th place was 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker Main Event winner Carter King. King had check-raised the flop of {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} against Micah Raskin. A reraise was the response from Raskin before King moved all in. Raskin called with just the {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for ace high. His ace high was currently the best hand against the {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for King. King did have some draws working in his favor. The turn brought the {8-Clubs} and the river the {3-Clubs}, missing King and giving Raskin that pot. That was the hand that put everyone else in the money and guaranteed him or her at least $7,500.

As soon as the money bubble burst, bunches more hit the rail. Those who squeaked their way into the money, but won’t be returning for Day 3 were Marcello Del Grosso, Shannon Shorr, Ronnie Bardah, Adam Junglen, Eric Baldwin and Joseph Elpayaa.

There are still plenty of big names who will be returning to action tomorrow to continue their quest to claim the last title up for grabs of Season 1 on the NAPT. Team PokerStars will be represented by Jason Mercier, Anh Van Nguyen and George Lind. Nguyen has the most chips out of those three with 614,000.

It’d be a shame to forget about Phil Laak, Michael Binger, Bryn Kenney, Mike Sowers and Matt Afleck. They’ll all be coming back for Day 3 as well and will join up with NAPT Venetian Main Event champion Tom Marchese.

Play resumes on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM PST at The Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California. PokerNews will see you back here then!

Bardah Bounced

Ronnie Bardah
Ronnie Bardah

Ronnie Bardah raised from under the gun and got one caller. The flop came down {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-} and Bardah fired a continuation bet worth 17,000. His opponent called.

The turn added another {7-} to the board and Bardah checked. His opponent fired 43,000. Bardah check-raised all in for 168,000 and his opponent said, "Huh? You're all in? I call," quickly when he realized Bardah had shoved.

Bardah tabled the {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for two pair and a flush draw while his opponent held a better two pair with the {A-}{Q-}.

The river didn't find a club or a five for Bardah and he was sent to the rail in 86th place for $8,500.

Shorr Washed Away

Shannon Shorr
Shannon Shorr

In early position, Shannon Shorr made it 13,000 to play, and Tom Lee reraised to 33,000 with position. Shorr called, and it was heads up to the flop. It came {6-Clubs} {3-Spades} {5-Diamonds}, and Shorr checked. Lee wasn't messing around, and he announced an all in for 220,000! Shorr had a similar-sized stack, and he eventually made the call to put a huge pot up for grabs. His call was a good one:

Shorr: {4-Spades} {4-Hearts}
Lee: {A-Hearts} {10-Diamonds}

There's no justice in poker sometimes. The {10-Spades} landed promptly on fourth street, and Lee shot out of his chair yelling, "I got it! I got it!" Shorr could only stand there shaking his head with a look on his face as if someone had just bluffed his mother. The {J-Diamonds} river was no help to him, and when the chips were counted down, he was left with just 8,000 to work with.

There's history between the two men that had been at the table for the duration of Day 2, but Lee gets the last laugh. He's up over 500,000 to about five and a quarter right now.

On the next hand, Shorr was all in under the gun for 7,500 with {A-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, and he was a slight favorite when an opponent called with {K-Hearts} {10-Spades}. The flop was really laughable by this point as it came {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {K-Spades} to leave Shorr dead to runner-runner. The turn {A-Spades} was just a tease as the river {J-Diamonds} was the last card of Shorr's day.

Baldwin Out of the NAPT L.A.

Eric Baldwin
Eric Baldwin

As we walked back to the tournament floor we saw Eric Baldwin standing in the payout line. He was kind enough to inform us that he had opened with {K-}{Q-} and received a call from a player who held {10-}{10-}. The flop fell {J-}{10-}X and Baldwin continuation bet, the set raised, and Baldwin shipped his stack with his open-ended straight draw. The turn and river were no help and Baldwin was sent to the rail.

Nguyen Eliminates Junglen

Anh Van Nguyen raised from middle position and received a call from the woman on the button. Adam Junglen then moved all in for his last 65,000 from the small blind and Nguyen isolated with a reraise. The button got out of the way and the hands were turned up:

Nguyen: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Junglen: {K-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Junglen was in bad shape and didn't improve on the {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop. Neither the {5-Clubs} turn and {6-Spades} river provided relief and Junglen was eliminated from the tournament. Meanwhile, Nguyen is up to 520,000.

Bardah Puts Some Gravy On Those Biscuits

Ronnie Bardah (Day 1a)
Ronnie Bardah (Day 1a)

Ronnie Bardah raised to 13,000 from under the gun before action folded around to the button. The player on the button reraised to 32,500 and that knocked the blinds out of the way. Bardah was back up and took a few moments before moving all in for 93,000. His opponent made the call. Bardah tabled two bullets with the {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}. He had his opponent dominated with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}.

The flop, turn and river were dealt out {J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Clubs} to seal the double up for Bardah and move him to 192,500.
