Mercier Concedes Big Pot

With about 70,000 in the pot and a board reading {A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Spades}, the player in Seat 7 checked to Jason Mercier, who bet 41,400. Seat 7 wasted little time in raising to 141,100 and Mercier tanked. He thought for a solid two minutes before gently sliding his cards into the muck. Seat 7 then showed the {9-Spades} as Mercier sat their emotionless.

Mercier, who is an avid Miami Dolphins fan and no doubt pleased with their win over the Titans earlier today, currently sits with 170,000.

Welch Likes the River

Action folded to Anh Van Nguyen on the button and he threw in a min-raise to 8,000. Ryan Welch called from the small blind as the big blind got out of the way. Both players checked the {5-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop as well as the {2-Hearts} turn. When the {10-Spades} appeared on the river, Welch led out for the minimum bet of 4,000. Nguyen called but mucked when he saw that Welch had made a pair on the river with {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

Nguyen took a very small hit to his giant stack while Welch increased his to 285,000.

Bomb Defused

Michael Binger raised to 9,500 from middle position and received a call from the player in the hijack. Phil "The Unabomber" Laak was in the cutoff and put in a raise to 25,000. After the blinds got out of the way, Binger grabbed a stack of chips and reraised to 73,000. Both the hijack and Laak folded and Binger took down the pot without a flop. He is sitting with right around 430,000.

Van Alstyne Doubles Through Van Nguyen

From under the gun, Team PokerStars Pro Anh Van Nguyen raised to 8,000. James Van Alstyne flatted on the button and the small blind came along as well. The flop came down {A-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs} and the small blind checked. Nguyen fired 16,000 and Van Alstyne went all in for 37,900. After the small blind mucked, Nguyen tank-called, verbally hoping that Van Alstyne held a draw.

Nguyen: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Van Alstyne: {A-Spades}{8-Spades}

The turn brought the {K-Spades} and the river the {5-Hearts} to keep Van Alstyne holding the best hand. He doubled up to about 80,000.

Break for the Race

We are just three spots from the money so play has slowed considerably. With a couple more eliminations, play will hit hand for hand. However, before that happens players will take their last ten-minute break of the night. Meanwhile, tournament staff will race off the black 100 chips.
