Almost Time for Heat #5

Today marks the fifth heat in the PartyPoker Premier League IV. Phil Laak claimed his third victory yesterday after having only played three heats and is off to a furious start. He's almost certainly locked up the chip lead going to the final table and still have another heat to play where he could secure more points.

Here's how the standings look going into today, with everyone in bold playing today.

1. Phil Laak – 48 points
2. David Benyamine - 35 points
3. Giovanni Safina - 21 points
4. JC Tran – 17 points
5. Yevgeniy Timoshenko – 16 points
6. Roland De Wolfe – 14 points
T-7. Luke Schwartz – 12 points
T-7. Vanessa Rousso – 12 points
9. Ian Frazer – 10 points
10. Phil Hellmuth - 6 points
11. Tony G - 5 points
12. Daniel Negreanu – 4 points

Phil Hellmuth, Tony G and Daniel Negreanu are all playing today and really need to finish towards the top in order to have a chance at making it to the final table. Luke Schwartz is coming off a solid day of play yesterday where he earned his best finish and will be looking to ride that momentum into another good performance today.

Last time JC Tran and Hellmuth played together, there was a lot of battling between the two. Hellmuth even declared war on Tran. Laak will be commentating and is looking forward to the continuation of the war today. Here's what Hellmuth had to say about it on Twitter:

"JC Tran outplayed me today, well done sir. But I am going to mess JC up big time next match!! JC wants war, I'll give him war..."

Combining those two with Negreanu, Tony G and Schwartz, the banter should be strong today.

Action is set to begin in a little bit. The production crew is getting some pre-game interviews done and fixing up the last bits of preparation and then things will be underway.

Another Early One for Timoshenko

Yevgeniy Timoshenko
Yevgeniy Timoshenko
Daniel Negreanu limped under the gun with the {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and then JC Tran raised to 8,000 from the next seat with the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Yevgeniy Timoshenko called from the small blind with the {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and Giovanni Safina called from the big blind with the {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}.

The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{7-Spades} and action checked around. The turn was the {8-Diamonds} and Timoshenko bet out 21,000. All three of his opponents in the hand folded and another early pot went to Timoshenko.

Squeeze Fails for Negreanu

JC Tran raised from under the gun to 6,000 holding {A-?}{Q-?}. Ian Frazer called in position with the {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and Giovanni Safina called in the small blind the the {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Daniel Negreanu was in the big blind and looked down at the {Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. He squeezed a reraise to 31,000. Tran folded and then Frazer put in another raise after hesitating for a little bit to 111,000. Safina folded and Negreanu folded as well.

Top Pair for Safina

PartyPoker online qualifier Giovanni Safina
PartyPoker online qualifier Giovanni Safina
Giovanni Safina raised preflop to 6,000 holding two suited broadway cards in the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Daniel Negreanu held two suited broadway cards as well with the {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts} and made the call in position.

The flop came down {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and Safina picked up a pair of kings with the second best kicker. He fired a continuation bet of 12,000 and Negreanu mucked.

Hellmuth vs. Tran: The Battle Continues

Tran and Hellmuth
Tran and Hellmuth
On the flop of {K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, JC Tran checked his {10-Spades}{9-Spades} to Phil Hellmuth who held the {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. Hellmuth bet the minimum for 2,000 and Tran called. Things could get interesting here as these two have had some history in the Premier League so far.

The turn brought the {5-Hearts} and both players checked. The river was the {2-Spades} and Tran fired 5,000.

"Nine-ten is good," said Hellmuth, calling Tran's hand and then mucking his cards. Tran didn't show and scooped the pot.
