Tournament Tidbits

Nap Time for Mackey
Nap Time for Mackey
Mike Matusow is here. Now you and everyone else in this room are aware of that. Matusow is making his way from table to table, shouting stories at anyone he recognizes. His latest victim is Jean-Robert Bellande, and the conversation between the two men can be heard on the next island over.

John Duthie has been getting a rather awkward looking massage since the cards went into the air. At last check, the therapist had Duthie's head locked between her hand and elbow, rubbing his forehead with his hair protruding in all directions out from under her deathgrip. The EPT founder looks comfortable enough, despite the peculiar position his neck is being bent into.

James "mig.com" Mackey must have had a long night. He's just shy of being fully asleep at his table, barely opening his eyes once a minute to see if he's been dealt a hand. At a nearby table, Dario Minieri is also half-asleep. They serve strong coffee in the lounge, fellas.

Greenstein Smashes the Ladies

There was a raise preflop before Barry Greenstein put in a reraise from the hijack seat. The raise amounts were unknown. The player in the small blind then raised again, making it 3,375 to go. After the first raiser folded, action fell back on Greenstein. He then made it 9,000 straight. With the pressure back on the player in the small blind, he moved all in. Greenstein quickly made the call, tabling {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}. His opponent had {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}.

The board ran out {9-Spades} {5-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} to keep Greenstein's aces the best hand. He's now up to 68,000 chips and looking strong.

Phillips Takes One

From early position, Carter Phillips raised to 400 and the small blind called. The flop came down {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} and both players checked.

The turn brought the {6-Diamonds} and two more checks. After the river completed the board with the {J-Spades}, the small blind checked. Phillips fired 550 and was called. He showed {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts} and scooped in the pot, moving up to 32,000.

Richey Drops a Small Pot

Brett Richey raised from middle position to 400. He got one caller from the player in the small blind. The flop came down {Q-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} and the small blind checked. Richey fired 650 and his opponent called.

The turn brought the {2-Spades} and both players checked.

The river completed the board with the {5-Clubs} and the small blind led with a bet, making it 2,200 to go. Richey slid his hand into the muck. Although he lost a few chips on this hand, Richey is still above the starting stack with around 37,000.

For those of you that may not know who Brett Richey is, he has made the final table of two WSOP events and earned himself nearly $400,000 in tournaments over his career. Richey is also making a name for himself in some of the biggest games at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. If there's a big game going on in Bobby's Room, you can usually find Richey mixing it up with the likes of Doyle Brunson, David Oppenheim and Gus Hansen.

Moneymaker Pays it Off

With about 6,000 chips in the middle of the table, we walked up to a board reading {3-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {8-Hearts}. Action was on Chris Moneymaker, and he stuck in a bet of 5,000 straight. His opponent, an unknown gentleman, made the minimum raise to 10,000, and Moneymaker called him down.

We wouldn't see Moneymaker's cards as his opponent tabled {2-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}. The World Champ's holdings went into the muck, and he has slipped back to 12,600 here in the second level.
