Daniel Shiff Eliminated in 12th Place ($85,000)

Daniel Shiff - 12th place
Daniel Shiff - 12th place

It's apparently going to be a game of leapfrog atop the chip counts, and Kyle Julius has just jumped back to the front.

It was Martin Jacobson who opened the pot, though he'd not make it past the flop. Julius (button) and Daniel Shiff (big blind) both called, and the dealer spread out {8-Hearts} {8-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}, and it checked to Julius. He bet 175,000, but Shiff check-raised to 350,000, and that's what shook Jacobson out of the way. The call came from Julius, though, and the {Q-Hearts} paired the board on the turn. Check-check.

On the river, the {9-Clubs} drew a leading bet of 200,000 from Shiff, leaving just about that much behind, too. Julius insta-announced an all-in raise, and Shiff was looking pretty miserable about this time. He had little choice but to call though, and the news was not good. Julius showed up {A-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, and Shiff flashed his worthless {K-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} as he spun them into the muck.

It's the end of the line for Shiff, and he'll stop by the cashier to pick up a check for $85,000 on his way out the door.

We've got 11 players left.

Visser Doubles Back

Ruben Visser
Ruben Visser

In the cutoff seat, Kyle Julius raised to 175,000, and Xuan Liu put out 260,000. It was an under-raise, and it's not clear to us whether she intended to call or raise. Regardless, she was asked to make it 270,000 for a legal raise, and Ruben Visser responded by shoving all in for 1.88 million total, and Julius ducked for cover. Liu snap-called, though, and the cards were shown up.

Liu was working with {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}, but Visser had that smashed. His {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} had him poised for a monster double, and Julius said he'd folded pocket tens. Liu didn't believe him.

In any event, the board ran out {10-Spades} {8-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {8-Clubs}, and Visser has smashed a double. It moves him all the way up to 4.075 million and just ahead of Liu. She's still got 4 million left, and it's starting to get a little clogged at the top of the counts.

D'Auteuil Coolered Off

Anthony Gregg raking in the double-up chips
Anthony Gregg raking in the double-up chips

First in from the hijack seat, Anthony Gregg just called, and Phil D'Auteuil raised to 280,000 from the big blind. Perhaps surprisingly (or perhaps not), Gregg limp-raised all in for 2.32 million, and D'Auteuil made the call for almost all his own chips and the chance at the knockout. It was a serious cooler.

Showdown
Gregg: {K-Clubs} {K-Spades}
D'Auteuil: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}

Gregg's kings were never in much jeopardy as the board came {9-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {8-Spades} {10-Spades}, and he's vaulted up into second place overall. He's got about 4.7 million now, while D'Auteuil will be left with just about 600,000 with which to try and work a comeback.

Phil D'Auteuil Eliminated in 11th Place ($85,000)

Phil D'Auteuil - 11th place
Phil D'Auteuil - 11th place

Under the gun, Phil D'Auteuil raised big to 450,000, essentially committing himself to the pot with most of his chips already in. From the cutoff, Anthony Gregg reraised all in to isolate, but his shove would not get through. In the small blind, Faraz Jaka woke up with a monster, and he called all in for 2.375 million. D'Auteuil dropped his last few chips in the pot too, and Gregg was looking for a huge double knockout as the cards were turned up.

Showdown
D'Auteuil: {J-Clubs} {6-Clubs}
Gregg: {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}
Jaka: {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}

Gregg managed to pair up on the {3-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {10-Spades} flop, but that's as close as he'd get. The turn {8-Hearts} and river {J-Spades} kept Jaka's aces in front, and it's he who sends D'Auteuil off in 11th place. It was a fine run for the French Canadian who's better known as "takechip" from his online domination, but his bid for a major live title has come up just that short.

Jaka has rebounded fully from his midday slide, and he's back into the mix of the leaders with 5.55 million. That's second place right now.

Jaka Gives Some Back

Bernstein finds his double
Bernstein finds his double

Under the gun, Faraz Jaka raised to 235,000, and David Bernstein shoved all in on him for 1.18 million. Jaka made the call with {9-Spades} {9-Hearts}, and he was flipping for the knockout as Bernstein rolled over {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}.

But Bernstein's horse ran faster, and the {Q-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {3-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} board gave him the winning pair of queens. Just after notching a double of his own, Jaka grants one to Bernstein, and the latter is back up to 2.56 million. Jaka's back down to 4.1 million — essentially where he began the day.

Since dropping that double against Bernstein, Faraz Jaka has been relentlessly aggressive. No one pot has been particularly noteworthy in that span, but he's worked his stack back up to about 5.5 million in just a couple orbits of the button.

Martin Jacobson Eliminated in 10th Place ($101,000)

Martin Jacobson - 10th place
Martin Jacobson - 10th place

Well, this Martin Jacobson fella is going to win one of these at some point. The man who made headlines around the EPT this past season has come up just shy of a final table bid here at the PCA.

When the table folded to him in the cutoff seat, Jacobson pushed his last 1.41 million into the pot, and Xuan Liu re-shoved two seats over in the small blind. That got them heads up, and Jacobson needed to improve to stay alive.

Showdown
Jacobson: {10-Hearts} {J-Spades}
Liu: {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} flop paired them both, but it kept Liu in front with two to come. The turn was the blank {5-Diamonds}, and Jacobson needed to find one of five outs in a hurry. The river was paint, but it was the {Q-Hearts}, and that's not going to get it done.

Jacobson made three EPT final tables in EPT Season 7, and he almost managed to start 2012 off in typical final-table fashion. But the Swede will have to settle for 10th place this time around, and it's his eighth career six-figure cash.

Liu is back in the top two now, increasing to about 6 million with the knockout.
