Mortensen Misses With Second Bullet

Carlos Mortensen on Day 1.
Carlos Mortensen on Day 1.

Carlos Mortensen busted early on Day 1, but he returned later that night to fire a second bullet. The 2001 World Series of Poker champion managed to make it through to Day 2, but that is where his tournament comes to an end.

It happened when he got his stack of 75,000 all in preflop holding {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and was racing against the {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} of Ty Reiman. Mortensen needed to improve, but he failed to do so as the board ran out an uninspiring {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}.

You Mad, Marvin?

Marvin Rettenmeier
Marvin Rettenmeier

There's no doubt that Marvin Rettenmaier had a heck of a year in 2012; in fact, just last month he won the EPT Prague €10,000 No Limit Hold'em-High Roller event in the Czech Republic for $477,479. Unfortunately for him, that was 2012 and this is 2013.

Rettenmaier's demise came when Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst opened for 8,000 from early position and he moved all in for roughly 80,000 from the big blind with {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Selbst made the call with {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and had Rettenmaier in dire straits.

The {9-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop delivered Selbst a set, but the {Q-Diamonds} turn made things interesting as Rettenmaier picked up an open-ended straight draw. The dealer burned one last time and put out what would be Rettenmaier's last card in the 2013 PCA $25,000 High Roller... the {J-Clubs}.

Raskin Has ALL the Chips

Micah Raskin
Micah Raskin

Micah Raskin just flopped the nut flush holding the {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts} on a board of {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} against an opponent who flopped a weaker flush with the {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Raskin's opponent fired on all streets before moving all in on the river. Raskin made the call, saw that his opponent didn't have a full house and shipped in the pot. He's now up to about 1.36 million in chips and crushing.

Lamb Chopped by Raskin

Ben Lamb - Eliminated
Ben Lamb - Eliminated

Ben Lamb opened to 8,000 from the cutoff seat, and Micah Raskin three-bet jammed for effectively 80,000 from the big blind. Lamb tank-called.

Lamb: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Raskin: {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

Lamb was ahead, but there was a nine in the window of the {4-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{9-Spades} flop. Raskin's pair held as the turn and river came {7-Diamonds}, {4-Clubs} respectively, and Lamb was eliminated.

Harder Cracks Aces

Christian Harder
Christian Harder

Just before the level change, Christian Harder was all in and at risk for 165,500 with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. He was standing and ready to leave, because Max Silver had him crushed with {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}.

The flop fell {k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}.

"What a flop!" Shaun Deeb exclaimed.

Harder flopped a pair of kings and a backdoor flush draw, and the turn was the {9-Hearts}, keeping the draw alive. The dealer rapped the table a third and final time, and spiked the {7-Hearts} on the river.

Harder's eyes ballooned to the size of quarters.

Silver didn't realize that Harder made his flush however, and said "Sorry."

He then realized that Harder made five hearts, and began laughing hysterically. Harder doubled to around 350,000 chips, while Silver was left with just 80,000 chips.

Celestino Eliminated in Major Blind-vs-Blind Cooler

Ariel Celestino - Eliminated
Ariel Celestino - Eliminated

Some hands are just flat out bad luck, but that doesn't make them any less disgusting, especially when such hands happen so close to the money. That's exactly what happened to Ariel Celestino as he was just coolered in a blind-vs-blind situation.

When we arrived, Rachid Ben Cherif had 81,000 laid out in front of him in the small blind while Celestino had 42,000 out in front in the big. The latter responded by making it 142,000 to go, Cherif moved all in, and Celestino called off for a little over 400K.

Celestino: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Cherif: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}

It was a major cooler and Celestino looked devastated. He was up out of his seat and went to his rail for consolation. He turned back to watch the cards, but one by one they fell until the board read {7-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Celestino failed to get lucky and he watched his big stack pushed over to Cherif.

Petrangelo is the Bubble Boy

Nicolas Petrangel bubbles
Nicolas Petrangel bubbles

The money bubble has burst on just the fourth hand of hand-for-hand play with Nicholas Petrangelo finishing as the unfortunate bubble boy.

It happened when a short-stacked Petrangelo moved all in under the gun for 79,000 holding {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and he cleared the field all the way around to Shawn Buchanan, who woke up with {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} in the big blind. The call was made and immediately the cameras, media and other players surrounded the table to watch.

Petrangelo was in need of a nine to keep his 2013 PCA $25,000 High Roller hopes alive, but it just wasn't in the cards as the board ran out an uneventful {3-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{J-Spades}. All things considered, Petrangelo seemed to take being the bubble boy in stride.

Brandon Meyers Eliminated in 24th Place ($54,980)

Brandon Meyers - 24th Place
Brandon Meyers - 24th Place

Action folded to short stack Brandon Meyers in the hijack seat, and he raised all in for 50,000. Mike Watson called on the button, and everyone else folded.

Watson tabled the {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} to dominate Meyers' {A-Spades}{8-Hearts}.

On the flop, Meyers picked up additional outs with a flush draw as the {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts} fell. The turn was the {5-Spades} and river the {7-Diamonds}, missing Meyers and sending him out the door in 24th place.

Jeff Gross Eliminated in 23rd Place ($54,980)

Jeff Gross - 23rd Place
Jeff Gross - 23rd Place

"You've had a nice run of cards over there," Jeff Gross told Ole Schemion upon discovering some bad news.

Before we get to that, let us set the stage. Ole Schemion had opened for 12,000 only to have Mickey Petersen three-bet to 25,000. Gross then four-bet all in from the button for around 140,000, the blinds folded, and Schemion moved all in over the top. Petersen quickly got out of the way and Schemion tabled {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

"That's true," Schemion replied to Gross' aforementioned observation. Gross then flipped over the inferior {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}.

"I due to get lucky," Gross said. No sooner did he say it than the dealer diminished his hopes with a dry {J-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop. The {10-Diamonds} turn gave Gross some hope with an open-ended straight draw, but he was not due to get lucky on the river as the {A-Clubs} blanked.

Max Silver opened to 12,000 from the hijack seat, Sam Stein called in the cutoff, and Shaun Deeb three-bet to 41,000 on the button. Silver four-bet jammed for what looked like 200,000 or so, Stein folded, and Deeb snap-called.

Silver: {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Deeb: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

The board ran out {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades}, and Silver was eliminated. Deeb now has 960,000 chips.
