With action on the river and the board reading {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Spades}{j-Spades}. Patrick Tardif made a large bet of about 80,000 which Cesar Cruz called quickly.

Cruz showed the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} set while Tardif had the {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} straight as he carved a large section of Cruz's stack away.

Mixed games are quite popular at the Golden Nugget during the Grand Poker Series, and there’s a full offering on the schedule. Case in point was Event #23: $200 Night H.O.R.S.E. $5K GTD, a tournament that attracted 59 runners and offered up an $8,850 prize pool.

That was paid out to the final table of eight players with the final three opting to work a deal. Coming out on top and finishing as the winner of the tournament for $2,068 was Canada’s Calen “Big Wheel” McNeil.

McNeil, who learned to play poker online while in college, is perhaps best known in the poker world for topping a massive 1,014-player field to win the 2013 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event #20: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better for $277,274 and a gold bracelet.

Clearly mixed games are in the wheelhouse of “Big Wheel.”

Iyer Makes Big River Call

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante

Action was picked up on the turn and the rest of the action was retold to PokerNews.

There was a raise to 5,000 from early position, Abhinav Iyer defended his big blind.

The flop came {10-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{a-Spades}. Iyer check-called a bet of 3,000. The turn was the {q-Diamonds}. Iyer check-called a 16,000 bet.

The river was the {8-Hearts}. Iyer checked once again. His opponent jammed all in to force Iyer to make the decision for his entire stack. After thinking for about two minutes he called.

His opponent indicated good call and showed the {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, which Iyer had beat with the {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs} and he gathered the pot.

Meanwhile at that same table, Michael Lerner added more chips after he felted a player holding {a-}{k-} with his {k-}{k-} when the board ran out clean.
