Jon Honeycutt Wins Run It Up Reno $125 Six-Max Five-Card PLO ($2,800)

Level 19 : 10,000/20,000, 0 ante

With two tables left in the $125 Six-Max Five-Card Pot-Limit Omaha event at Run It Up Reno, Jon Honeycutt was the chip leader with 168,000 at blinds of 2,000/5,000. He declared at that point that he was going to win the tournament, and that's exactly what he did, topping the 100-player field for $2,800.

The tournament paid out 15 places, and Jason Somerville, who was defending his title from last year's Run It Up Reno, was one of those to make the money. He fell in 10th however, consoling himself with the fact that he has cashed in every PLO event ever held at Run It Up Reno.

Another player to make the money was Jesse Capps (14th), who came runner-up in last year's Main Event here.

Honeycutt was atop the counts when the final table began, closely trailed by Deb Swift. Douglas Charles also advanced to the final table, his third of the series, but he was ousted right away in seventh by Jerry White, who said he was playing his first PLO tournament.

Eliminations happened in quick succession, and after Honeycutt busted White in third, it was he and Swift heads up, the two players who had been unable to agree on terms when a chop was discussed as both coveted the trophy. Honeycutt held the edge chip-wise with a 3-1 lead, and though Swift doubled through him the first time he put her at risk, the second time was a different story.

Swift limped in for 20,000 with a stack of around 200,000, and she and Honeycutt got stacks in after a raising war on a {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop. Honeycutt had the {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Swift the {j-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}.

Honeycutt had Swift dead with the nut straight and a diamond redraw, and he hit that flush on the river for good measure. The trophy Honeycutt had prophesied he would win was indeed his.

Deb Swift Eliminated in 2nd Place ($1,850)

Deb Swift limped in, and Jon Honeycutt checked. Honeycutt checked a {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop and Deb Swift potted for 40,000. Honeycutt repotted, and Swift immediately announced a pot bet to put herself all in. Honeycutt called.

Honeycutt: {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Swift: {j-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}

Swift had flopped a straight but it was far inferior to Honeycutt's hand, which was the nut straight and a flush draw. The {5-Spades} was a blank on the turn, and the {3-Diamonds} gave Honeycutt a flush to boot on the river.

Jerry White Eliminated in 3rd Place ($1,350)

Level 18 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Blinds Jerry White and Jon Honeycutt saw a {3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop for the minimum, and White potted first to act. Honeycutted repotted, and White got up, sighed, and said he was all in, which Honeycutt called.

Honeycutt: {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
White: {10-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

White had bottom two and a straight draw but needed improvement against top two. The {2-Spades} turn and {j-Hearts} river did him no good.

"Someone Else is Going to Have to Take it This Year"

Jason Somerville
Jason Somerville

Those were the words of Jason Somerville, who just busted out in 10th place. He was the champ of this event last year but despite a spirited defense, he will fall short of two straight.

On the bright side, he does have one thing going for him: he has cashed in all three PLO events in Run It Up Reno history.

Welcome to Run It Up Reno $125 Six-Max Five-Card PLO

Jason Somerville

One pot-limit Omaha event has already been completed here at Run It Up Reno, and it's time for a supercharged version of the famously wild poker variant. The $125 Six-Max Five-Card PLO event is set to kick off at 6 p.m. local time here at Peppermill.

While the traditional four-card version of PLO creates plenty of action, the five-card version creates even more possibilities. "Big O" is gaining steam across the world as a cash game, but today's event will not be high-low split like Big O.

The event here at RIUR will see players start with 10,000 in starting chips and blinds at 25/50. Reentries are allowed for the first nine levels and blinds will be 20 minutes apiece with 30-minute final table levels.

Last year, tournament host Jason Somerville himself took down the five-card PLO event, besting a field of 116 runners to take down $3,828. We'll see if he can repeat the feat today.
