Shawn Schoreck Wins 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Belle of Baton Rouge ($34,105)

Level 21 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante

After a three-hour heads-up match, Shawn Schoreck emerged victorious over Kou Vang to win the Mid-State Poker Tour Belle of Baton Rouge for $34,105. Vang will have to console himself with $21,032. The heads-up battle was a mismatch on paper, with Vang holding a $512,930-to-$4,376 edge in career tournament winnings, but Schoreck prevailed when his {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds} help up all in before the flop against Vang's {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}.

Busts came fast and furious early on, as players wasted little time getting their chips into the middle. Just a few hours in, we were already hand-for-hand on the money bubble, which lasted more than two hours until the elimination of Seville Hale. Justin Truesdell and David Chocheles bowed out shortly thereafter, and we were set with our final table.

The last woman remaining and the Day 2 chip leader coming in, Erica Sumner, was the first to fall when final table play began when she shoved over a raise with ace-ten and lost to Daniel Holmes' ace-queen.

Michael Benton, Allen Kessler, Mihail Karasoulis, and Robbie Matthews busted out in a flurry after that, leaving us five-handed. Matthews had a particularly tough exit, as he got all in with the nut straight on the turn against two pair, only to watch Daniel Holmes' {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} spike a boat on the {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{j-Clubs} board.

Long-time chip leader Tom Annonson then busted with {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} when he couldn't catch the {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} of Shawn Schoreck. A short-stacked Will "Monkey" Souther found himself with three outs when he jammed {a-}{4-} against the {a-}{q-} of Kou Vang, and the "Monkey" fell short of matching the success of Russell Wilson, whose jersey he'd donned for the final table, by exiting in fourth.

Daniel Holmes attempted to push the pace three-handed, but he seemed to pick the wrong spots to turn up the aggression, and he shipped all in from the button for 289,000, and Schoreck made the call in the small blind. After about two minutes of thought, Vang laid his big blind down.

Holmes: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Schoreck: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The flop left both with hopeful positions: {7-Spades}{q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, giving Schoreck a straight draw and two overs while keeping Holmes' eights best for the moment. An {a-Clubs} turn cause Holmes to slide his chair back, and the {2-Hearts} river officially ended his tournament.

Both Vang and Schoreck held leads heads up, but Schoreck lucked out in a couple of all in pots before grinding Vang down for the win.

Thanks for tuning in to PokerNews' live coverage of MSPT Baton Rouge, and we look forward to another exciting stop in Gary, Ind., in a couple of weeks.

Kou Vang Eliminated in 2nd Place ($21,032)

Kou Vang - Second Place
Kou Vang - Second Place

Kou Vang opened for a raise on the button, and Shawn Schoreck three-bet to 200,000 from the big blind. Vang shoved all in for about 600,000, and Schoreck went into the tank. After thinking for awhile and professing his belief that he needed to get lucky, he made the call.

Schoreck: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Vang: {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}

Instead, Vang was the one in need of luck, but he received none on the {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop. A {5-Hearts} turn was a blank, and the {10-Clubs} river ended the tournament.

Vang Takes Commanding Lead

Kou Vang doubled up huge.
Kou Vang doubled up huge.

Kou Vang opened for his standard 44,000 on the button, and Shawn Schoreck three-bet to 125,000. Vang made the call, and the two saw a flop of {10-Clubs}{6-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

"Same bet," Schoreck announced, and Vang called once more.

The turn was the {2-Clubs}, and Schoreck bet out 300,000. Vang shoved for 723,000, and Schoreck thought for about a minute before dropping a calling stack in.

"Let's get a club out there," Schoreck said.

Schoreck: {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Vang: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Vang had flopped two pair, but Schoreck had outs with bottom pair and a flush draw. The river was a brick: {8-Diamonds}, and Vang now has a huge lead.

Daniel Holmes shipped all in from the button for 289,000, and Shawn Schoreck made the call in the small blind. After about two minutes of thought, Kou Vang laid his big blind down.

Holmes: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Schoreck: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Vang, meanwhile, said he folded two sevens.

Tom Annonson Eliminated in 5th Place ($8,072)

Level 17 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Tom Annonson - Fifth Place
Tom Annonson - Fifth Place

Tom Annonson jammed from under the gun for 173,000, and Daniel Holmes called in the cutoff. Shawn Schoreck came along in the small blind, and Kou Vang folded his big.

After the {2-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop, Schoreck put Holmes all in for about 400,000, and Holmes quickly folded

Schoreck: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Annonson: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Annonson's Cinderella run was down to a two-outer, but he didn't get there on the {k-Diamonds} or the {9-Clubs}.

Robbie Matthews Eliminated in 6th Place ($6,139)

Level 17 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Robbie Matthews - Sixth Place
Robbie Matthews - Sixth Place

Robbie Matthews opened for 36,000 from the cutoff, and Daniel Holmes defended his big blind. The flop came {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, and both players checked. A {10-Clubs} turned, and Holmes bet 42,000. Matthews shipped it for 220,000. After tanking for a bit, Holmes called.

Holmes: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Matthews: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Matthews had turned his gin card after checking back, and he was in fantastic position to bust his opponent. The dealer burned and turned the {j-Clubs} though, filling Holmes up and causing Matthews to knock over his chair in disbelief.

Down to his last 7,000 after the ante, Holmes got it all in the next hand after Shawn Schoreck opened to 60,000 under the gun. Tom Annonson called on the button.

After a flop of {3-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}, Schoreck bet 100,000, and Annonson raised to what looked like 230,000. Schoreck immediately moved all in, and Annonson called.

Annonson: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Schoreck: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Matthews: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

A turn of {3-Diamonds} left an already-trailing Annonson in dire straits since kings up would do him no good. The river was paint, but it was the {q-Spades}, not the king Annonson needed, and he shipped all but his last 50,000 to an elated Schoreck.

Mihail Karasoulis - Seventh Place
Mihail Karasoulis - Seventh Place

Mihail Karasoulis shoved for 76,000 from the button, and Tom Annonson called out of the big blind.

Karasoulis: {a-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Annonson: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

The dealer placed a flop of {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{k-Clubs} on the felt.

"That's good," Karasoulis said, clearly hoping for a chop. "Big one."

The turn was a {3-Spades}. The dealer burned and turned a {9-Clubs} river.

"That's bad," Karasoulis said. He shook his conqueror's hand and headed for the payout desk.

Allen Kessler - Eighth Place

Allen Kessler shoved over a raise from Shawn Schoreck, who call for the remainder of Kessler's stack.

Kessler: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Schoreck: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

Kessler pulled ahead on the {7-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop, but Schoreck spiked the {5-Spades} on the turn to leave Kessler drawing dead. Kessler made worthless trips on the {k-Clubs} river.
