Bursavich Leads, Souther in Second to End Day 1a (full)

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Austin Bursavich leads the 18 Day 1a survivors.
Austin Bursavich leads the 18 Day 1a survivors.

The first day of play in the 2014 Mid-States Poker Tour Belle of Baton Rouge Main Event has come to a close. Austin Bursavich bagged 187,300 in chips to notch a wide Day 1a chip lead over the other 17 survivors of the flight, and Will "Monkey" Souther was next in line with 132,000. Rounding out the top five stacks were Nicholas Graphia (95,700), Jack Carona (81,700), and Claudia Crawford (69,700).

A total of 55 entries were recorded, and the remaining 18 players will bide their time before returning on Sunday for Day 2.

Bursavich, who has no recorded cashes that we could find, burst onto the radar in this event with a huge double against Frank Bravata followed by busting the lively Ben Mintz. His upward trajectory took few detours from there, as he seemed to show up with huge hand after huge hand, despite playing what looked to be every other pot.

Souther, meanwhile, owes his hefty stack to two pairs of aces in hole, winning all-in pots against players holding {j-}{j-} on two separate occasions that you can read about here and here.

Graphia, who bagged the third largest stack, played perhaps the most exciting hand of the day when he dragged a pot with quads queens against kings full.

Other notables bagging up for the night include Matt Kirby (69,300) and Justin Truesdell (50,200), while accomplished runners like Kou Vang, Kenny Malim, Matt Alexander, Bill Romer, Nick Jivkov, and Allen Kessler hit the exits before the end of the night.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow as we bring you live coverage of Day 1b here at PokerNews.

Will Souther doubled for a second time today with AA.
Will Souther doubled for a second time today with AA.

A player in middle position opened for 4,800, and Will Souther three-bet to 11,700 from the next spot. Everyone folded back to the raiser, who plopped down a stack of gray and orange chips. Souther announced all in, and his opponent called.

Souther: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Middle position: {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}

The board ran out {2-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}, providing threat to Souther's aces.

Graphia Drags Big Pot Without Showdown

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Nicholas Graphia is now among the leaders.
Nicholas Graphia is now among the leaders.

Claudia Crawford opened for 2,500 in the cutoff, and Austin Bursavich three-bet to 6,400 on the button. Nicholas Graphia called in the big blind, and Crawford made it 15,000. Bursavich got out of the way, and Graphia tanked for a bit before calling once again. When the dealer splayed the {4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} flop, Graphia check-shoved for about 61,000 after Crawford continuation-bet 16,000. Crawford thought for a bit before laying down her hand.

Meanwhile, David Chocheles doubled up at the other table when he opened under the gun and saw numerous callers. The {q-}{7-}{6-} flop brought just what he was looking for, however, as his all-in bet was called by a player with {a-}{q-} while Chocheles held {6-}{6-} for a set. He doubled up when his hand held.

Crawford Sends Kessler to Rail

Level 8 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Claudia Crawford checked it back and turned the nuts.
Claudia Crawford checked it back and turned the nuts.

Claudia Crawford opened for 2,500 from middle position, and Allen Kessler defended his big blind.

"What?!" Crawford said with exaggerated surprise. "Wow. Allen's gonna see a flop."

See a flop the two did, and it came {3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. Kessler checked, and Crawford quickly checked it back. A {9-Clubs} hit the board, and Kessler bet out 3,000. Crawford made it 7,000, and Kessler thought briefly before moving all in.

Crawford called right away, turning up {j-Spades}{10-Spades} for the nuts, and Kessler tabled {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs} for top pair with a straight draw. A ten would give him a chop, but the river was the {5-Spades}, and Kessler expressed his disgust at how he'd "dumped chips."

Kenny Malim ran into two big hands when he shoved.
Kenny Malim ran into two big hands when he shoved.

Kenny Malim shoved all in for 7,100 under the gun, and Ken Hughes jammed for 21,600 right behind him. Two spots later, David Chocheles made it a third all in covering both, and everyone else folded.

Chocheles: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Hughes: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Malim: {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, leaving Hughes' jacks best and eliminating Malim. Meanwhile, Chocheles is down to a short stack.

Belle of Baton Rouge's Marty Brown Discusses Upcoming Mid-States Poker Tour Series

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Marty Brown, Director of Casino Operations at Belle of Baton Rouge
Marty Brown, Director of Casino Operations at Belle of Baton Rouge

A couple weeks ago, PokerNews sat down with Marty Brown, Director of Casino Operations at the Belle of Baton Rouge, for a quick Q&A on the upcoming MSPT. Here's what he had to say.

PokerNews: The MSPT is visiting the Belle of Baton Rouge for the first time. In fact, it’s the first time the MSPT has traveled so far south. What inspired you to bring the MSPT to town?

Marty Brown: Hosting an event like this and partnering with MSPT is a great opportunity to expose the city of Baton Rouge and our property casino to out of town poker players.

What sort of things has the Belle of Baton Rouge been doing to prepare for the MSPT?

We have partnered with a few hotels in the immediate surrounding area to make sure we have plenty of available rooms. My gaming team completed a third deck casino floor redesign to accommodate 15 poker tables to ensure a more secluded area for the tournament play. There will be qualifying tournaments beginning on Feb. 11.

Can you tell us a little about your property and the surrounding area?

The Belle of Baton Rouge Casino & Hotel has a 288-room hotel, 14,000 square foot atrium and a full service casino with 787 slot machines, table games and poker room.

Can you describe the poker room at the Belle of Baton Rouge?

The poker room at the Belle is located on the second deck of the casino. We have a four-table room and offer $1/$2 and $2/$5 no limit, $4/$8 limit Texas hold’em and Omaha. Promotions include Aces Cracked ($100) on Monday and Wednesday from 9am-3pm, High Hand of the Hour ($50) on Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-3pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm.

Are there any other events going on players should check out when in town for the MSPT?

Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge! The Artemis and Orion Parades will be rolling right next to the Belle of Baton Rouge property. A great chance to experience a true Louisiana tradition!

If you had to recommend three things for players to do other than poker while at the Belle of Baton Rouge, what would they be?

Visit the campus of Louisiana State University that is less than five miles from the casino. Tour the USS Kidd right next to the casino, and don’t miss the downtown Mardi Gras fun parade experience.

Where’s the best place to eat at the Belle of Baton Rouge?

Shucks on the Levee, with traditional south Louisiana dishes.

Bursavich Stays Hot

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Austin Bursavich rivered a set.
Austin Bursavich rivered a set.

Austin Bursavich's seemingly unstoppable climb continued in a recent hand.

In a blind-versus-blind battle, Frank Bravata bet out 3,000 on a {3-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop. Bursavich made the call, and he then called 5,000 more on the {7-Spades} turn. The river brought a {6-Spades}, and Bravata bet 5,000 more. Bursavich put him all in for about 15,000 more, and Bravata snap-called.

Bravata: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Bursavich: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Bursavich had gotten lucky and spiked a set on the river, and Bravata was forced to ship all of his chips to his left.

Thomas Eliminates Vang

Kou Vang got caught shoving with jack-high.

Kou Vang shoved for about 9,000 from the small blind after Ben Thomas opened for a raise in early position, and Thomas called.

Thomas: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Vang: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Vang was behind, but he at least had live cards. The {2-Spades}{a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}, thought left him dead to runner runner, and the {5-Clubs} and {9-Clubs} didn't bring nearly enough help.

Souther Doubles

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
Will Souther doubled up with AA.
Will Souther doubled up with AA.

After multiple players saw a {7-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Spades} flop in a raised pot, Will Souther got all in for 11,275 from the hijack against a middle-position opponent, while a player on the button folded after putting in 4,500.

Souther: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Opponents: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Souther was in a commanding position, but his opponent turned one of the best cards in the deck: {8-Diamonds}, giving him a straight draw if he could find a ten. The river was the {8-Clubs} though, and Souther doubled up.
