Sindler Finishes Day 1a On Top

Level 12 : 700/1,400, 200 ante
Beautiful Aruba sunset
Beautiful Aruba sunset

Day 1a of the 2013 PPC Aruba World Championship $2,500 Main Event concluded on Saturday following the completion of the first 12 levels of play. A total of 43 entries were tallied on the first starting day, meaning the event has already surpassed the field size that it attracted last year (31 entries). The field was whittled down to 13 players with Stephen Sindler emerging as the chip leader. He bagged up 211,600 in chips.

From the start of the day, it was all Sindler. He grabbed the chip lead very, very early on went he knocked out the first player of the day. Then it was big pot after big pot pushed his way while everyone else seemed to be playing catch up.

Sindler busted the defending champion of this event, Joe Serock, when his {K-}{10-} cracked Serock's pocket queens. All is not lost for Serock's title defense, though, as reentry is allowed until the start of Day 2, so he'll have all of Day 1b to fire away and try and build a stack.

Speaking of reentry, Ryan Franklin was the only player to bust on Day 1a and reenter, but the choice looked like it was a good one. After busting relatively early in the day, Franklin took another shot, and ran his second attempt up to 102,200 in chips.

In the latter half of the night, Sterling Savill really started making moves, but as soon as he took the chip lead, it was Sindler who earned it right back. In two big pots in the last couple levels of the night, Sindler busted Edie Norman first and then shortly thereafter sent Catherine Dee to the rail.

Plenty of notables came and went as well, including David Tuthill, Chris Bolek, Hayden Fortini, Joe Ebanks, and Andy Seth. Bolek and Fortini were casualties on the same hand, and it was a large one indeed. Bolek, Fortini, and Jimmy Peters found themselves all in on the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop. Bolek had the {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}, Fortini had the {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}, and Peters had the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Following the {7-Spades} on the turn and the {A-Clubs} on the river, Peters' hand held up to send Bolek and Fortini out the door.

While 12 players remained at the end of the night, another starting flight — the second and final starting flight — will take place on Sunday beginning at 3 p.m. local time. PokerNews and the PPC will see you back here then for more action from the felt.

Franklin Quadruples; Savill Takes Chip Lead

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Sterling Savill
Sterling Savill

When we arrived at the table, Ryan Franklin was all in for 20,100 and Stephen Sindler and Julian Durity had made the call before Sterling Savill went into the tank. Eventually, Savill moved all in. Sindler folded, but Durity called all in for around 50,000 total.

Franklin was the shortest stack of the three, but tabled the best hand with the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. Savill had the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, and Durity had the {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{K-Spades} to give Franklin the win. He quadrupled up while Savill won the side pot to bust Durity. Savill actually made a little bit on the hand and increased his stack to 133,000 in chips.

Savill Busts Seth

Level 8 : 300/600, 100 ante
Andy Seth
Andy Seth

From under the gun, Sterling Savill opened with a raise to 1,400. Action folded to Andy Seth on the button, and he reraised to 3,700. After the blinds folded, Savill reraised and made it 6,600 to go with a four-bet. Seth moved all in for approximately 23,000, and Savill quickly called.

Savill tabled the powerful {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} and he had Seth's {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} on the ropes. The flop, turn, and river ran out {K-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{J-Clubs} to eliminate Seth and move Savill to nearly 80,000 in chips.

Defending Champ Serock Eliminated

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Joe Serock
Joe Serock

The defending champion of this event, Joe Serock, has just been eliminated. Fortunately for Serock, players can reenter up until the start of Day 2, so his title defense isn't over just yet.

Serock opened with a raise to 1,200 before Stephen Sindler reraised to 4,000. Serock moved all in for around 14,000, and Sindler called with the {K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Serock had {Q-}{Q-}.

A kind was on the flop as the board ran out {K-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{7-} to bust Serock.

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Pam Buzzetto
Pam Buzzetto

Pam Buzzetto was all in preflop with the {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} against chip leader Jimmy Peters holding the {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The flop contained a queen to add to the hurt for Buzzetto when the {Q-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts} rolled out. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn and {6-Spades} on the river finished out the board, and Buzzetto was eliminated. Peters moved to a commanding 138,000 in chips.

Welcome to the 2013 PPC Aruba World Championship

Bon bini!

Welcome to PokerNews' live reporting coverage of the 2013 PPC Aruba World Championship Main Event. The second installment of this event has returned once again to the beautiful island of Aruba off the north coast of Venezuela.

Last year, Joe Serock earned the title in this event after defeating Jesse Chinni heads up to walk away with $40,574 in first-place prize money. Dave Poces finished third, and Steve Karp took fourth.

Although the event only attracted 31 entries last year, it is important to note that this was the first time a true poker event returned to Aruba since 2009. The PPC deserves much credit for their quest to put poker in Aruba back on the map, as it is one of the best destinations for a stop on the circuit.

This year, things are already planned to be much bigger and better. The buy-in has been dropped from $3,300 to a more affordable $2,500. The Main Event has a juicy $200,000 guarantee slapped on its head, with reentries allowed over the course of the two starting days. Beyond the Main Event, the series has eight other tournaments ranging in buy-ins of $220-$550. The first event of the series, a $550 buy-in no-limit hold'em event with a $40,000 guarantee, attracted 94 entries, breaking the guarantee and generating a prize pool of $45,590. Fort Lauderdale, FL's Amir Baron won the event for $15,500.00.

Rumors swirling around the Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa are that approximately 60 players have already been satellited into the $200,000 guarantee Main Event through PPC's various other events held leading up to Aruba. Others confirmed to be playing are defending champion Serock, World Series of Poker gold bracelet winners Ronnie Bardah and Joe Ebanks, 2013 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open third-place finisher Mukul Pahuja, and 2013 Isle Poker Classic champion Chris Bolek.

The structure is player-friendly, with 25,000-chip starting stacks and levels beginning at 45 minutes for Day 1 before increasing to 60 minutes from Day 2 forward. The blinds begin at 50/100 with a break every three levels. Following the completion of the sixth level, there will be a 60-minute dinner break.

Action in the Main Event is scheduled to begin later this afternoon at 3 p.m. local time, which gives everyone (PokerNews included!) plenty of time to hit the beach and explore Aruba. We'll see you back here in a bit for the kickoff of the event. Hopefully by then everyone isn't too many Aruba Aribas deep!
