Rae of Light: PokerStars Player Donald Rae Leads Day 1A Field

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Donald Rae
Donald Rae

The United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour has returned home for a second time, the Isle of Man, for the latest stop of the UKIPT. With PokerStars being based here on the island, it seemed only right that this tour would come back once again after a successful event last year. With a £700+£70 buy-in and a £350,000 prize pool guaranteed, players flocked from both Europe and America to play in this re-entry event.

There were 145 runners on Day 1A including numerous members of the Rational Group staff (people who work for either PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker). This is one of the things that makes this specific event special as staff members are allowed to play. The only request being that staff members are requested to wear special staff patches, simply in the interests of transparency.

After ten levels of action it was Donald Rae who finished as the chip leader with 154,900. He's ahead of Rational Group Staff member Steve Day (135,000), UKIPT Marbella champion Ludovic Geilich (123,700) and runner-up here last year, PokerStars SportStar Fatima Moreira de Melo (91,600). Other players who made it through the day included Simon Deadman (79,900), Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Dermot Blain (38,100) and Lee Jones sans boomswitch (33,000). Elsewhere Sam Grafton's non-stop chirping allowed him to finish the day with 76,300 while Team Online's former EPT winner Mickey Petersen spent most of the day grinding a short stack and comes back on Saturday with 26,300 – just over 16 big blinds.

The draw at the start of the day threw up some interesting tables, SportStar Fatima Moreira de Melo, shared a table with the man who beat her to the Isle of Man UKIPT title last year, Duncan Mclellan. The Englishman, who had since won a second UKIPT title in Nottingham back in May, was one of the early casualties, though it is likely he'll be re-entering tomorrow. Full Tilt Ambassador Martins Adeniya is expected to do the same having run an overpair into a set in the first couple of levels. Fellow Ambassador Ben Jenkins was also eliminated in the opening levels, as was Team Online's Vicente Delgado and former EPT Grand Final winner Steve O'Dwyer. Others who were knocked out during the day included: Team PokerStars Pros Matthias De Meulder and Luca Pagano, PokerStars Mind Sports Ambassador Jennifer Shahade and UK circuit regulars Jon Spinks and Max Silver. Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov also failed to make it through, busting in the very last level of the day.

Many of these players will take another crack at the tournament tomorrow due to the re-entry format. The field is also expected to greatly increase in size with 355 players needed to make the £350,000 guarantee – anything less will result in an overlay for all involved.

Those playing tomorrow will include Triple Crown Winner Jake Cody and two-time EPT winner Vicky Coren as well as many more Rational Group Staff. Day 1B will start at 12pm local time so join us back here as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team bring you further action from this event!

Lappin Busts

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

David Lappin wasn’t particularly happy with his recent exit as he recapped the action for PokerNews. There was an open from the cut-off which the small blind flat called. Lappin then shoved for 25 big blinds and once the original raiser had got out of the way the small blind tanked and then made the call with {a-Spades}{8-Spades} against the {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} of Lappin. The board ran out {5-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and a disbelieving Lappin headed out.

Willie Out

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Willie Tann had got to the river of a board reading {4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} with just over 8,000 behind. Gary Clarke checked it over to him and called when Tann moved all in. Clarke had {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Tann just nodded, mucked his cards and made a dignified exit.

Grafton Unimpressed With Petersen Double

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Mickey Petersen - "Can't Fold Pairs."
Mickey Petersen - "Can't Fold Pairs."

David Nuth made a 4.5x raise under-the-gun and PokerStars Team Online Pro Mickey Petersen moved all in for his last 10,600. Nuth made the call with {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} and was in a flip against the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} of Petersen. The board ran out {j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{2-Spades}{q-Spades}{j-Spades} to double up Petersen and put the hurt on Nuth.

Grafton sprang to life as Petersen stacked the chips jokingly berating him for putting his stack at risk with his hand asking what he thought he was up against from Nuth. Turning to Nuth he told him, “These kids can’t fold pairs.” vowing not to play on PokerStars anymore after what he had just witnessed.

Just then Ludovic Geilich dashed back to the table and Grafton started on him saying, “It’s ok Ludo, you’re in time for your under the gun so you can still raise.” Gelich did just that and picked up two callers, one of them Nuth in the big blind. The flop was {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{q-Clubs} and a shove from Nuth was met with an insta-call from Geilich.

Nuth had hit with {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} but was out kicked by the {k-Hearts}{q-Spades} of Geilich. Grafton was cheering on Nuth but it was not to be as the turn was the {4-Diamonds} and the river the {6-Hearts} to felt him. Grafton was again mock-incensed at the set-up hand but was told by Geilich that he had been, “Anti-railing me all day. You’ve got to play king-queen strong.”
