Winstar World Casino's 2014 River Poker Series Main Event Set to Start

Since 2007, poker players have been gathering at the beautiful Winstar World Casino to take part in a late-summer poker tournament boasting some of the biggest prize pools and guarantees in all the poker world. The 2014 Main Event of the River Poker Series will be getting underway shortly and one thing is certain — the winner will take home the biggest first place prize in the history of the event as they are guaranteed a cool million dollars in cash for collecting all the chips. Couple that with a $2.5 million guaranteed prize pool and it's no surprise that the likes of Tom Marchese, Joseph Cheong, and Layne Flack have made their weekend plans to be playing poker here in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

Sure to join those names are the likes of last years winner, Kaophone Inthavong, who would collect $473,900 for that title. He bested a field that had players like Maxx Coleman, 2011 winner Bronson Tucker, Bryan Campanello, Jonathan Tamayo, Christian Harder, Ryan Tepen, and Tommy Vedes all making the money. 2012 winner Aaron Massey will be returning looking to continue on a very successful 2014 and Winstar World Casino ambassador Maria Ho will take her seat in hopes of making a deep run.

This tournament will have three Day Ones over the course of the next three days. Players will start with 25,000 in tournament chips and the levels will be 40 minutes in length on Day One. If a player is fortunate enough to survive they will return to play Day Two on September 1st at 2 p.m. local time.

Cards will be in the air shortly. PokerNews will be here until the very end so make sure to tune in to find out who is here and who is poised to take a shot at the million dollar first place prize!

That Didn't Take Long...

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

It only took a few minutes before we heard our first "Seat Open" and we arrived at the exiting player's table to get the details. According to Aaron Massey, the eliminated player couldn't get rid of {A-}{A-} on a {Q-}{6-}{5-}{K-}{Q-} board and was felted at the hand of an older gentleman's {A-}{Q-}.

Fortunately for him there are plenty of opportunities to get back into the tournament as the event is an unlimited reentry until registration closes at 3 p.m. as well as two additional starting days.

Familiar Faces

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Here's a look at some of the familiar faces we saw during an initial pass through the tournament area of the Global Events Center.

Most notable is tournament regular Aaron Massey, who won this very event two years ago for for a score of over $651,000. Massey is in the field today and seated at the same table as RunGood pro Justin Gardenhire.

Steven Doubles Early

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Brandon Steven
Brandon Steven

We arrived in time to see Dan "Wretchy" Martin and Brandon Steven involved in a hand on a flop of {5-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{A-Diamonds}. Martin led out and Steven came over the top with a raise. Martin three-bet to 4,750 only to have Steven ship all in over the top for what looked to be just under 20,000. Martin called and the hands were turned over.

Martin: {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Steven: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Both players flopped sets but Steven's jacks trumped the fives. The board finished with the {4-Spades} and the {K-Clubs}, allowing Steven's set to secure him a double up. He scooped the pot and brought his stack up to around 45,000. Martin, on the other hand, was left with just about 4,800. He was eliminated from play soon after.
