The first mixed-game event of the 2014 WSOP Asia-Pacific come to a conclusion on Friday with Rory Young claiming gold in Event 6: AU$1,650 8-Game Dealer's Choice.

Three days ago, 89 players took a seat in the first of two mixed-game tournaments to be held at Crown Melbourne, and when it was all done and dusted, a prize pool of AU$133,500 was generated to be awarded to the top nine finishers. Once Day 2 began, only 19 remained, and although the field was stacked with notables, many found their way to the rail before the money.

The second day of action saw Day 1 chip leader Gary Benson bust short of the money, along with Michael Guzzardi, Stuart Rutter, Jeff Gross, and multiple bracelet winners Jeff Madsen and Frank Kassela. Then, local Srdjan Brkic became the bubble boy. After that, it was Shivan Abdine (9th), Michael Wang (8th), and Samuel Ngai (7th) all falling short of the final table.

Young would lead coming into the final table, but he would be up against some formidable company that included Australian poker veterans Sam Khouiss and Jason Gray, youngster David Zhao, and two-time WSOP bracelet winners Brian Rast and Danzer. Danzer would be eyeing at least a fourth-place finish so he could once again snatch back the lead in the WSOP Player of the Year race from Shack-Harris, but things wouldn't quite work out for the German.

Action began with players arriving late, but once the cards were in the air, it would be Khouiss surging out into the chip lead before Danzer was crippled to just 700 in chips. The following hand, Danzer doubled, but on the next hand after that, the German's one pair wasn't enough to keep him alive once Rast rivered quads.

Young took back the lead, then gave it to Rast, then found it back in his possession before Gray's fight with the short stack ended at the hands of Young in 2-7 triple draw when Gray's nine-seven wasn't to defeat Young's eight-six as he fell in fifth place. Zhao would be the next to go and the final table was down to three.

Rast soon was pushed down to the short stack before his final hand occurred when he was all in holding the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} against Young's {Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} in no-limit hold'em. A six on the flop and on the turn would seal Rast's fate in third, as Young took roughly a 5-3 chip advantage into heads-up play.

From the onset of heads-up play, Young dominated the action as the games switched between pot-limit Omaha and 2-7 triple draw — very similar to how the entire final table played out. Khouiss was pounded down to worse than a 4-1 dog, but the Sydney-sider continued to fight. Unfortunately for him, it just wasn't his day as Young continued to outdraw him in 2-7 triple draw over and over before the final hand played out in pot-limit Omaha.

Khouiss potted the big blind holding the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}, and Young called with his {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Hearts}. Then, Khouiss called all in with the board reading {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}. With Khouiss needing any ace, jack, eight, or seven to stay alive, the river landed the {10-Clubs} to send him to the rail and give the victory to Young.

The brash youngster in Young played very controlled and aggressive poker throughout the final table and previous days, and for his efforts will be taking home the coveted WSOP gold bracelet and AU$42,720 in prize money. Congratulations to Young and all the in-the-money finishers for their efforts in this one.

Pot-Limit Omaha

Rory Young limped the button and Sam Khouiss tossed in three blue 5,000-denomination chips indicating a raise of pot. Young called the 7,200 total before he bet out 12,000 on the {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop with Khouiss check-calling.

The turn landed the {Q-Diamonds} and following a check from Khouiss, Young splashed the pot with a bet of 40,000. Khouiss ummed and ahhed for a few moments before dropping in a stack of chips to indicate he was calling all-in for his last 35,800.

Khouiss: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}
Young: {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

With Young holding top pair and a flush draw, he would need to fade Khouiss' double gutshot straight draw and outs to a better two-pair and trips.

The dealer burned and turned the {10-Clubs} on the river to see Khouiss improve to two-pair while simultaneously improving Young's hand to a set to send the Australian poker stalwart to the rail in 2nd place for an AU$26,402 payday.

No Limit Hold'em

The very next hand game mode was switched to Hold'em and the action folded to Rory Young in the small blind. He moved all in and Brian Rast in the big blind peeked at his cards before calling off his short stack.

Rast: {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts}
Young: {Q-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}

The {3-Hearts} {3-Spades} {6-Hearts} flop saw Rast remaining in the lead but that suddenly changed when the {6-Diamonds} appeared on the turn. Only one of the two remaining eights in the deck could save him, the {A-Hearts} on the river was a blank and Rast was eliminated in 3rd place for AU$ 18,482.

Pot-Limit Omaha

Sam Khouiss opened to 4,000 from under the gun and David Zhao called in the big blind before leading for 8,000 on the {7-Clubs}{A-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop. Khouiss announced a bet of pot and Zhao moved all in with Khouiss calling the additional few thousand.

Khouiss: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Zhao: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

Although both players held the same made hand with top and bottom pair, Khouiss had the best draw with his bigger flush draw.

The dealer dropped the {Q-Clubs} on the turn to give Khouiss the pot with the {2-Clubs} unable to provide a chop for Zhao on the river as he hit the rail in 4th place for an AU$13,462 payday.

2-7 Triple Draw

The action folded to Jason Gray and he raised from the small blind. Rory Young made the call one seat over and they both drew two cards. Young bet 3,000 and Gray check-called before drawing two while Young stood pat. The final draw saw Gray drew one again, Young stood pat. Gray check-called all in and they flipped over their cards.

Gray: {9-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}
Young: {8-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {2-Clubs}

The 9-7 was not good enough for Gray and he wished all opponents good luck before exiting the final table.

Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo

After being crippled in the previous hand, George Danzer was all in for his last 200 chips as the 500 ante was already in the pot from everyone. All opponents except Sam Khouiss made the call and then checked down to sixth street, where Jason Gray bet 4,000 to scare off everyone else.

Danzer: {X-} {X-} / {4-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades}
Young: {X-} {X-} / {3-Spades} {7-Hearts} {2-Spades} {10-Diamonds} / fold
Rast: {X-} {X-} / {7-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {8-Spades} {J-Clubs} / fold
Zhao: {X-} {X-} / {6-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {A-Clubs} {9-Hearts} / fold
Gray: {X-} {X-} / {7-Clubs} {7-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}

Danzer flipped over {2-Clubs} {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds} and improved to two pair jacks and nines with the last card to win the high pot, whereas had worse two pair with the {4-Spades} {2-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} and a 7-6 low.

The next hand, Danzer was all in for 1,500 and got called by Brian Rast and Rory Young. Rast bet 5,000 on sixth street and that scared off Young.

Danzer: {X-} {X-} / {7-Hearts} {K-Spades} {8-Clubs} {6-Spades}
Young: {X-} {X-} / {A-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {8-Spades} / fold
Rast: {X-} {X-} / {2-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {5-Hearts}

Danzer revealed {K-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} and Rast showed {Q-Hearts} {4-Clubs} ... drawing the {5-Spades} on seventh to make quads and send the German to the rail.

2-7 Triple Draw

Rory Young opened to 4,000 and Sam Khouiss called from the big blind and drew two to Young's one. Khouiss checked, Young bet 2,000 and Khouiss check-raised to 4,000 with Young calling. Khouiss stood pat and Young drew one with Khouiss betting and Young calling.

The final draw saw Khouiss stand pat again as Young drew one as Khouiss bet out another 4,000.

"You put in all that money and you're drawing dead? What a donkey!" laughed Khouiss in the direction of Young.

Young rechecked his hole cards numerous times before folding.

"I'll always give you guys a chance. Just a number two" stated Khouiss and revealed his {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} to scoop the pot and take the chip lead.

Young Leads Final Six, Rast and Danzer Still Alive!

Rory Young
Rory Young

Welcome back to Crown Melbourne and the 2014 World Series of Poker for the Event 6: AU$1,650 8-Game Dealer's Choice final table.

The 89 player field has been reduced to a final six with Rory Young sitting on top with 102,300 in chips. Snapping at his heels however is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Rast who bagged an impressive 96,400. Three Australian poker regulars in David Zhao, Sam Khouiss and Jason Gray all look to continue Australia's dominance at this year's WSOP Asia-Pacific, however it is the the fate of the sixth final table combatant that most people will be interested in.

Earlier in the series, Germany's George Danzer took the lead in the WSOP Player of the Year race before Brandon Shack-Harris wrestled back with his final table in the Terminator Event. For Danzer, a fourth place or better will see him capture the lead back ... but most likely not for too long.
