Monnette Maneuvers Up the Leader Board

Monnette eyes up Mizzi
Monnette eyes up Mizzi
We joined a heads-up pot in progress on Table 6. The first round of action is unclear, but we're guessing that John Monnette raised from the cutoff and Sorel Mizzi called from the button as those two men were the only two responsible for the ~15,000 chips already in the middle of the table.

Joining up now, the flop came down {5-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}, and Monnette fired out a bet of 13,000. Mizzi took his time to ponder before making the smooth call.

The turn card was the {7-Spades}, and it drew a check-check from the two men. The {A-Diamonds} filled out the board, and Monnette checked again. Mizzi plucked four blue chips from his stack and flicked in a bet of 20,000. Monnette shot a few sideways glances at his opponent before flicking in the calling chips in the same fashion.

Mizzi tabled {Q-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds} for second pair, and Monnette revealed his better {A-Spades} {10-Spades} for the rivered pair of aces. He's picked up another nice pot, his stack having swelled to about 175,000 now.

God is Dead

Patrik Antonius - eliminated
Patrik Antonius - eliminated
Patrik Antonius, nicknamed "God" by some in the poker world, has been eliminated from the tournament. He was short-stacked for most of the day. His final hand was a three-way limped pot from the big blind. Antonius made the first aggressive action on the {3-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades} flop by betting 4,500 into the 8,700-chip pot. One opponent raised to 12,400. Antonius had about 18,000 behind his original bet.

"Ok," said Antonius with a shrug. He splashed all of his chips into the pot. His opponent quickly called.

"I know I have the worst of it," Antonius said as he showed down a pair of fives, {Q-Hearts} {5-Clubs}. He was right; his opponent showed a pair of fives with a better kicker, {A-Hearts} {5-Hearts}.

"Oh, very bad," Antonius remarked. It didn't get any better. Th turn was the {K-Diamonds} and the river the {A-Clubs}, giving Antonius' opponent an unnecessary two pair and sending Antonius to the rail.

Minus One More

Roy Winston opened with an early-position raise to 6,100 before Kemal Basat moved all in for 13,800. Winston quickly called when it came back around to him, his {A-Spades} {Q-Clubs} poised to knock off Basat and his {K-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}.

When the dealer ran a board of {3-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {7-Hearts}, that's exactly what happened. Basat made his parting comments to his table mates and headed for the door as Winston stacked his chips as his own. That little boost to his stack pushes him just over the 100,000-chip mark.

Ferguson Bets, Wins

Chris Ferguson has long-held, well-earned reputation as an excellent tournament player. When he's in a pot with you, watch out. That may have been what Andy Bloch was thinking about in a recent and.

Bloch opened the pot preflop to 5,100 and was called by Ferguson in position and by the big blind. The flop came {2-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}, with the big blind checking to Bloch, the raiser. Bloch checked it right through to Ferguson, allowing Ferguson an opening to bet 12,000. It was a bet that drove both of his opponents out of the pot with little fanfare.

Beast of a Flop

Melih Ekmekçioğlu
Melih Ekmekçioğlu
Melih Ekmekçioğlu has just doubled through Sargon Ruya, courtesy of a timely two-outer.

All of the money went in before the flop and Ekmekçioğlu's sixes were dominated by Ruya's queens. The {3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} changed all that, however, giving Ekmekçioğlu top set, leaving Ruya drawing to one of the two remaining queens in the deck.

Blanks on the turn and river meant no miracle for Ruya, who was left with 46,900 in chips after the hand. Ekmekçioğlu improved to 106,000 with the win.

Freebie for Antonius

In a five-way limped flop of {8-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, both blinds checked to an early-position player. That player bet 6,200, folding the action to Patrik Antonius.

"I'm all in," Antonius said. "23,600 total." The blinds folded, bringing the action back to the initial bettor. He couldn't bring himself to make the call, open-mucking {8-Hearts} {10-Spades}. As Antonius dragged the pot, he grinned and showed the same hand -- {8-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}!
