Steven Warburton Leads the 2015 WPT UK High Roller

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Steven Warburton
Steven Warburton

The 2015 World Poker Tour UK £5,250 High Roller kicked off on Monday evening after a delayed start due to adverse weather conditions gripping many parts of the United Kingdom. When play did commence, the light and energy given off by some of the world’s top poker talent burned a hole through the fog and dazzled everyone inside Dusk Till Dawn.

Play started with 16 players in their seats, a figure that increased to 29 by the time Day 1 drew to a close. The total attendance should rise higher because players are permitted to reenter, or buy-in for the first time, up to the end of the first level of play on Day 2.

A total of 23 players managed to progress to Day 2, but nobody managed to accumulate more chips than Steven Warburton. If his name sounds familiar, it is because the talented youngster recently finished as runner-up to John Juanda in the European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event. After bagging up an impressive 149,000 in chips from a 50,000-chip starting stack, Warburton looks on course for yet another deep run in a major live poker tournament.

Hot on Warburton’s heels was Simon Deadman, who finished the night with 148,100 in chips. Deadman won a large pot halfway through the day’s proceedings, committing his stack with a full house when his opponent, Terry Jordon, had made a worse full house.

If poker had a man-of-the-match award, then it would go to the aforementioned Jordon. Down to 8,000 in chips after a cooler that gifted Deadman the then chip lead, Jordon rode his luck to claw his way back into contention. The big comeback point was his {Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} getting there on the turn of a {J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{a-Clubs} board to crack the {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} of Sergio Aido, with the chips piling in on the flop.

Aido failed to advance on his first attempt.

As the end of play drew near, Jordon flopped a straight at the same time as Tamer Kamel flopped a set. All of the chips went into the middle and, when the board didn’t pair, Kamel bused. With that, Jordon ended the night with 108,300 in chips, and he is one of only three players to start Day 2 with a six-figure stack.

American star Jason Wheeler struggled to travel from Amsterdam to Nottingham due to the his plane being diverted, yet had a fruitful session at Dusk Till Dawn and he will return to Day 2 with 85,400 in chips.

Other notables to progress to Tuesday's Day 2 included William Chattaway (92,900), Paul Newey (84,600), Sam Trickett (56,000), Adrian Mateos (48,500), Tom Hall (45,700), Ben Dobson (29,300), and Richard Kellett (28,800).

Play resumes at the later-than-advertised 1 p.m. local time and will continue until a champion is crowned.

Will Warburton go all the way? Can Deadman build on a great start? Or will one of the chasing pack emerge victorious?

All these questions will be answered on Day 2 of the 2015 WPT UK High Roller and PokerNews will be providing coverage every step of the way.

Kamel Buys In, Gets Involved Right Away; Kellett Five-bets

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Richard Kellett
Richard Kellett

Tamer Kamel is a familiar face on the UK and European poker circuit and has some stellar results to show for his efforts. He's bought in a few minutes ago and has wasted little time in getting involved with his new table mates.

Richard Kellett raised to 1,000 from middle position, Kamel three-bet to 2,525 from the cutoff only to see Sergio Aido four-bet to 8,700 from the small blind. Unperturbed by the action before him, Kellett five-bet to 15,000. Kamel asked to see Aido's stack, which contained 35,000 chips, before folded, then Aido himself sent his cards back to the dealer, leaving Kellett to take the pot down.

Mateos Mauls Sion

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Adrian Mateos

Elior Sion raised to 600 from under the gun and sparked a flurry of callers to his left. Billy Chattaway in the hijack, Adrian Mateos on the button, Senh Ung in the small blind and Jason Wheeler in the big blind made for a five-way contested pot.

Everyone checked to Mateos on the {2-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop, he bet 2,000 and only Sion called. Another five, the {5-Clubs} landed on the turn and Sion checked to Mateos, and the dangerous Spaniard bet 5,000. Again, Sion called.

The fifth and final community card was the {J-Diamonds} and Sion checked once more. Mateos placed three 5,000 chips in front of him, and Sion called that 15,000 only to be shown {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for trip fives a hand he couldn't beat, leaving Mateos to climb to 77,000.

Welcome to the 2015 WPT UK High Roller

Who's ready to become a champion?

Hello and welcome to PokerNews' live coverage of the 2015 World Poker Tour UK, coming at you from Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham.

Some of the best poker talent in the world is expected to make their way to Europe's premier card room to compete in the £5,250 High Roller event today, which features a substantial £250,000 guaranteed prize pool.

Anyone entering today's High Roller starts with a generous helping of 50,000 tournament chips and gets to play to 40-minute blind levels starting at 50/100. The plan is to play a total of nine levels on Day 1, with registration open until the start of Day 2 on Nov. 3. If you opt to buy in at this time, you'll still sit down with a healthy stack worth 50 big blinds, as the blinds and antes will be 500/1,000/100 at the start of Level 10.

Last year's High Roller came with a price tag of £6,000. The tournament attracted 50 entries, and it was the USA's Bryn Kenney who emerged victorious when he defeated the UK's Patrick Leonard in heads-up play. Kenney earned £100,000 for the win, and Leonard took home £62,000 for second place. Stuart Rutter also reached the final table and placed third for £43,000.
