A Local Chip Leader

Tony Merksick
Tony Merksick
Tony Merksick, from right here in Council Bluffs, IA, is our current chip leader with right around 38,000 chips. Merksick has had a good run at this series, cashing twice already.

William Burdick Eliminated by Brandon Cantu

William Burdick raised to 700 from early position. Action folded around to Brandon Cantu in the big blind who called. The flop came {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Cantu checked and Burdick bet 1275. Cantu raised all in and Burdick made the call, and the players showed:

Cantu: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Burdick: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}

The turned helped Cantu, coming the {4-Diamonds}. The river hit Cantu square as it came the {5-Spades}. Burdick walked off in disbelief while Cantu stacked the pot.

Slezak Blends In

Bob Slezak
Bob Slezak
When reporting the "notables" in today's event, we somehow overlooked Omaha native and WSOP bracelet winner Bob Slezak. Slezak was keeping a low profile on an outer table and has since been moved. Slezak has a lengthy list of cashes including a WSOP bracelet in Omaha eight-or-better. He is currently with an average 14,000 chips.

Picking Up the Pace

With just seven tables remaining and the blinds and antes increasing considerably over the next three levels, we could see the field reduced to an extremely manageable Day 2.

Tony Merksick Stays Active

Tony Merksick, playing from the big blind and facing a raise of 1,050 from the cutoff, peeked down at his hole cards. Merksick casually threw out 2,500 chips. The cutoff player smiled and said, "You got me," as he mucked his hand. An expressionless Merksick flashed {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} as he stacked the pot.
