When we were doing a pass through the room, we noticed the seat formerly occupied by Steve Brecher was empty. We talked with Stephen Kats, who was seated at the table, and he was kind enough to inform us of Brecher's demise.
According to Kats, Brecher raised to 550 under the gun and the next player to act made it 1,400 to go. Action folded all the way back around to Brecher, and he promptly moved all in for about 6,000. His opponent made the call and it was off to the races.

Brecher was ahead, but not after the {X} flop. Both the turn and river blanked, and Brecher became an early Day 1a casualty. We're guessing he'll be back in action tomorrow.

The rate of eliminations has been impressive so far. The board reads that 830 players are left of 911 entrants. Eight tables have already been broken and the pace doesn't seem to be slowing. With players able to enter tomorrow's Day 1b flight it seems that they are willing to gamble a little more.
Kenny Nguyen is having no problems accumulating chips today. He called us over to tell us how he picked up another 50,000. Nguyen opened with pocket aces and his opponent reraised him. Nguyen four-bet to 3,700 and his opponent five-bet to 10,700.
Nguyen called and the flop came . The turn was a queen and Nguyen's opponent moved all in. Nguyen called and saw bad news when his opponent turned over for a set. But when you're running that good, of course an ace came on the river for Nguyen.

Jake Toole raised to 700 from early position and found two callers in a middle-position player and the cutoff. The button then came in with a three-bet to 2,350, which only Toole called. Both players proceeded to check it down as the board ran out .
At this point the button flipped over , while Toole doubled checked his cards and then sent them to the muck. Toole is holding steady around the starting stack of 20,000.

Will "Monkey" Souther opened to 750 from early position and watched as three of his opponents came along for the ride. "Be sure to tell your readers it's the day from hell on Table 33," Souther said, referring to his dwindling stack. Things didn't get any better for Souther either as he ended up check-folding the flop to a 1,600 bet.
Monkey is down to 7,400.

We stumbled upon Steve Verrett's table with about 4,500 in the pot and a board reading . Verrett had fired out a bet of 3,200, and his opponent in the cutoff made the call, leading to the on the river. This time Verrett checked, the cutoff bet 5,600, and Verrett hit the tank.
Eventually he came out, flashed the , and conceded the hand, dropping to 27,500 in the process.

With 2,800 in the pot and a board reading , Chad Brown bet 2,500 into his single opponent, who happened to be in the cutoff. Instead of making the call, the cutoff opted for a raise to 7,000, leaving himself just 2,625 behind.
Brown looked over at his opponent's stack and nonchalantly said, "I'm gonna put you all in."
"Call," the cutoff snapped and tabled . Brown then revealed for a flopped set and the win. Brown is up to 40,000.
