Summers Straightens Out a Big Double

When we walked over to the table, we saw that Chris Summers was heads up in a pot that already had nearly 10,000 in it. The board read {8-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, and Summers checked to his opponent, who fired out a bet of 7,300. Summers tanked for about a minute before shoving all in for just a couple thousand more. His opponent made the pot committed called, and when the cards were tabled, Summers showed the nuts.

Summers: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

Summers had turned an unbeatable straight, and had his opponent drawing dead. The meaningless river came the {q-Clubs}, doubling Summers up to over 40,000, doubling his starting stack.

Griffin Takes One Down

A player in middle position opened to 525 and received a call from Gavin Griffin in the small blind before the player in the big blind three-bet to 1,700. The initial raiser folded while Griffin made the call.

The flop was {j-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Griffin checked. His opponent fired 3,000 of his 11,000 remaining to which Griffin responded by moving him all in. The call was made and the cards were tabled.

Griffin: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Opponent: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The turn was a blank but the {10-Diamonds} river shipped Griffin the pot as he takes an early chip-lead on this Day 1a flight.

Smith Sent Packing

When we arrived at Gavin Smith's table, we saw that a huge pot was brewing. There was about 7,500 in the pot, with Smith and his opponent heads up on a board of {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs}. There was a pink T5,000 chip in front of Smith, but his opponent had raised it to 10,000. This was just alittle more then Smith had, so it was a tough decision for him. After about 90 seconds, Smith slid the rest of his chips in, and his opponent put enough in to cover the bet. The cards were flipped, and Smith was in a world of hurt.

Smith: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}
Opponent: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

Smith had the best hand preflop, but his opponent caught up by flopping a set. Smith would need a two outer to survive, but he wouldn't get it, as the river brought the {q-Hearts}. Smith quickly made his way to the exit, and he will have the opportunity to return for Day 1b later today.

More for Griffin

We picked up the action headed to the flop in a raised pot contested by the player in the small blind, the player under the gun, and Gavin Griffin in middle position.

The dealer spread out the {9-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades} and the first two players checked. Griffin fired 1,250 and was called only by the player in the small blind. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and once again the first opponent checked. Griffin bet 1,975 this time but was met with a raise to 5,200 which was promptly called.

The river was the {5-Clubs} and after some thought, the first player checked, as did Griffin. The opponent tabled {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} which was just behind the {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} of Griffin.

Sengphet Gone

The last time we checked on La Sengphet, she had the table chip-lead and seemed to be moving in the right direction. However, she is not sitting there anymore and there are no chips in front of that seat. It appears she made a quick drop and exit from the tournament.

Sabat Yanks Monster Pot From Yockey

When we arrived at the table, Eddie Sabat and Bryce Yockey were in a pot with another player on a board that read {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades}. Sabat led out for 2,725, and Yockey was the only caller. The river brought the {4-Diamonds}, completing the flop flush draw. Sabat was not deterred, and wasted little time in firing out a big bet of 8,525. Yockey went into the tank, and after about a minute of thinking, tossed in the call. Sabat tabled {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a flopped straight, and Yockey mucked his hand. With that pot, Sabat is just under double his starting stack, while Yockey is down to 16,000.

Phillips Takes One Down

A short-stacked Dennis Phillips flatted a three-bet of 2,225 from the small blind before the initial raiser and one preflop caller both came along to make it four-handed to the flop.

The board came down {a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Phillips took the lead by moving all in for his final 5,500 or so first to act. That brought three quick folds from his opponents.

"Show a deuce!" cried one of the losing players. Phillips flashed his {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} as he raked in the pot.
