Day 2 Started

Day 2 Set To Begin At Rincon

After two grueling flights yesterday, we have narrowed a total field of 321 down to just 156 competitors. It is worth noting though that entry is still available so long as you have not used two bullets already. Sure enough, the tournament board hanging up in all corners of the room currently counts 327 players so we will see at least six faces we didn't expect to find in today's field. Before you count these players out, don't forget that Freddy Deeb entered on Day 2 of the event in L.A. and went on to win the whole thing.

Speaking of Deeb, he is only one of the players headlining today's impressive field. He will be joined by Joe Tehan, Gavin Smith, Eric Baldwin, Scott Clements, David "ODB" Baker, Gavin Griffin, Bryan Devonshire, Joe Kuether, Matthew Chang, and Allen Carter.

The man they are all chasing though is Luke Nettles who was able to finish with 197,000 chips. It looked as though he was going to have a commanding lead after the Day 1a flight when no other player had over 110,000 in chips. However, Day 1b found some notable competitors is Raymond Dandrea (169,500), Brandon Cantu (156,300) and Tu Huynh (126,300) who will be sure to push Nettles all day long.

Play is set to begin here in about half an hour and will continue all day and into the night. We are scheduled to play another 14 levels so make sure to stick with us as we cover all the action as the players fight for position and a spot in the money, here on "moving day".

Souza Gets Chips Early

Michael Souza busted out of Day 1a yesterday, and decided not to play in Day 1b. This gave him the option to come in today with a 20,000 stack, and he put it to use early, shoving on his first two hands. The first time he got no calls, but the second time, he was called by Justice Litle, who had just 5,800 from yesterday.

Souza: {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Litle: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Souza was in bad shape, but came out on top, as the board ran out {j-}{9-}{7-}{2-}{5-}. Souza took down the pot, and will look to build his shortish stack from here.

Mackoff Three-bet Ships

A player in late position raised to 2,200 before Jonas Mackoff moved all in for about 13,000 total. His opponent mulled over his decision for a little while and counted out his stack, which stood at about 20,000, a few times before tossing his cards to the muck.

Mackoff gave a playful fist pump as he raked in the chips.

Kuether Catches His Flush

We came to the table as Joe Kuether was heads up with his opponent. The flop read {9-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, and Kuether checked to his opponent, who bet out 4,000. Kuether check raised to 10,000, and his opponent thought for about 30 seconds before moving all in for about 10,000 more. Kuether quickly called, and the cards were tabled.

Kuether: {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Opponent: {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Kuether would need an ace or a heart to take the pot, and he wouldn't catch it on the turn, the {9-Spades}. However, the {7-Hearts} hit the river, giving Kuether the flush and sending his opponent to the rail.

Phillips Down and Then Out

Dennis Phillips bet 4,200 on a {k-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs}{j-Spades} board before getting min-raised by his opponent. Phillips made the call and when the river came down the {2-Hearts}, the two players quickly got the rest of the money in. It seemed to be about 10,000 total.

Phillips had {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts} while his opponent held {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} which crippled Phillips.

The very next hand, Phillips got his last 8,100 all in on a {2-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop and was called twice. The turn {4-Spades} and river {6-Hearts} were checked by both remaining players and the hands were revealed.

Phillips: {k-}{j-}
Dana Kellstrom: {a-}{q-}
Opponent 1: {a-}{k-}

In just two hands, Phillips was forced to exit Day 2 earlier than he had wanted.

Clements Eliminated, Masek Loses Some

The player under the gun shoved all in for around 20,000, and Scott Clements called off for less. Alex Masek was next to act, and he called the original all in, having both players covered. The cards were tabled, and Clements and Masek were in trouble.

Masek: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Clements: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}

Masek and Clements were cancelling each other out, and the news got even worse for both when the flop came {10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Hearts}. Clements would need runner runner straight to survive, but he wouldn't get it, as the board completed {a-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}. Clements was eliminated, while Masek dropped to 38,000.

Souza Unable to Keep Momentum

It seemed that Michael Souza was going to be able to use some early luck to wiggle his way into contention, but it was not to be. He was just seen leaving the poker room and his empty seat has no chips in front of it. He was the most notable of the 11 players that decided to buy in here on Day 2.
