Ilich Closes The Gap

Jamil Wakil and Drazen Ilich each committed 268,000 to get to the {9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop.

Both checked and did the same when the {A-Clubs} hit the turn. The {10-Hearts} river was checked by Wakil, but Ilich opted to fire another 268,000 on the river. Wakil gave it some thought, ultimately tossing in the chips to call.

Ilich tabled {A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, Wakil mucked, and Ilich took down the pot.

Ilich Takes The Lead

Drazen Ilich opened to what looked to be 51,000 in the cutoff and Jamil Wakil defended his big blind.

The flop came down {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Wakil led out with a bet of 80,000. A call from Ilich landed the {8-Clubs} turn which Wakil checked. Ilich bet 190,000, Wakil called, and the {5-Clubs} completed the board. A check from Wakil sent Ilich into the tank for a bit before he fired a whopping 520,000 on the river.

Wakil spent even more time in the tank, but emerged with a call. Ilich tabled {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for the absolute nuts, while Wakil mucked and saw his chip lead go over to Ilich.

O'Brien Nears Two Milly

Jim Harnden opened to 55,000 under the gun and Matthew O'Brien called from the small blind.

The two took in an {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop in which O'Brien check-called 80,000 from Harnden to see the {3-Spades} turn. Another check from O'Brien led to another bet from Harnden, this one for 180,000. O'Brien, though, put in a check-raise to 360,000. Harnden gave it up, giving the pot to O'Brien.

Harnden Making Some Cagey Moves

Matthew O'Brien surprised the table by limping in from the cutoff seat first into the pot. "Is that legal," Brian Hastings asked from across the table. It was legal, but it would ultimately be unproductive. Rob Williamson three-bet to 74,000 on the button, and Jim Harnden made another raise to 177,000 from the small blind. O'Brien folded, and Williamson called to see a heads-up flop.

It came {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {K-Spades}, and Harnden slowed down with a check. It was all part of his plan, though, apparently. When Williamson took his cue to bet 250,000, Harnden check-raised to 600,000 straight, and his opponent tanked and folded.

You might not guess it by your first impression of him, but the behatted Harnden knows his way around the felt. He's one of the senior members left now at the table, but he's so far having no trouble hanging with the youngsters in the remaining field.

Wakil Rebounds With Aggression

Two hands in a row here, both of them going the way of Jamil Wakil. And both of them at the expense of David Stefanski.

In the first pot, Wakil opened to 50,000 from the cutoff, and Stefanski three-bet to 101,000 from the small blind. Wakil shoved over the top of him, and Stefanski was forced to surrender his cards.

One hand later, Wakil opened to 50,000 again, this time from the hijack seat. Stefanski three-bet him to 116,000, but that wasn't getting through, either. Wakil shoved again, and Stefanski was forced to fold again, and Wakil has recovered some of his losses to move back up to 3.55 million.

Stefanski is geting a bit short now, sitting with close to 500,000 and 20bb.

Brian Hastings Eliminated in 11th Place ($17,184)

Under the gun, Brian Hastings came in with a raise to 48,000, and the action came around to Jim Harnden in the big blind. He made another raise to 120,000 total, and that drew a short pause from Hastings. He had just about 500,000 to start the hand, and he eventually committed his full stack with {J-Clubs} {J-Spades}. Harnden snap-called with the crushing {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}, though, and Hastings was drawing slim for survival.

There was no help for "Stinger 88" on board as it came {8-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}. The rest of the field can breathe just a bit easier now as the dangerous pro has been sent off. He'll take $17,184 for his work — worth a handful of big blinds at the nosebleed stakes he's accustomed to playing.

O'Brien Turns a Winner

Under the gun, Roman Valerstein came in raising to 52,000, and Matthew O'Brien called from the button to go heads up.

The dealer gave them a {4-Spades} {A-Hearts} {10-Spades} flop to work with, but they checked through to the {6-Hearts} turn. Valerstein made his delayed continuation bet of 66,000, and O'Brien wanted to play for more as he raised to 155,000. Valerstein gave it just a quick look before matching the bet.

The river brought the {J-Clubs} and a check from Valerstein, and O'Brien was going to fire again. He stacked up 465,000 and slid it across the line, and Valerstein snap-called to see what was what. O'Brien showed up {6-Spades} {6-Clubs} for the set, and it was the winner.

"Pair no good," Valerstein lamented as he spun his cards into the muck. He let out a big sigh as he paid off the debt to drop back to about 1.3 million, while O'Brien has moved up to about twice that count.

Stefanski Smashes a Double

In early position, Jim Harnden opened the pot to 50,000, and Jamil Wakil three-bet to 125,000 right next door. One more seat over, the action landed on one of the short stacks, David Stefanski. He looked down at something favorable and shoved all in for 438,000. That folded the rest of the table and Harnden out of the way, but Wakil asked for the count as he debated the call. When he learned the number, he went ahead and slid out the chips to put Stefanski at risk.

Showdown
Wakil: {6-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds}
Stefanski: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}

"You have my sut," Wakil noticed as the hands were shown up.

The flop came {K-Clubs} {10-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}, a big kaboom for Stefanski as he flopped Broadway and was guaranteed to survive his all in. The turn {J-Hearts} secured his double, and the river {3-Clubs} was the meaningless river. After doubling up and then some, Stefanski has worked his stack back up to 992,000 and back close to his high point in the tournament from late in Day 2.
