Start-of-Day Chip Leader Crippled by Gaines

Level 15 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

A huge pot just went down at Table 16 between two of the top six chip stacks from the beginning of the day—Erek Gaines and Aryeh Cohen. The latter began as chip leader, but now he's sitting on a rather short stack.

It happened when Kurt Jewell opened the action with a raise to 4,200. Cohen responded with a three-bet to 12,500 from the hijack, the cutoff called, and then Gaines four-bet to 30,000 from the small blind. Jewell folded, Cohen shipped, and the cutoff got out of the way. Gaines, who had 109,400 total, called off.

Gaines: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Cohen: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

Cohen was crestfallen upon seeing the cards and with good reason. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, he had just an 18.23% chance of winning the hand. That dropped to 8.38% on the {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, and the {6-Spades} turn knocked it down even further to 4.55%. Cohen needed a ten on the river to eliminate Gaines and take down the monster pot, but it wasn't in the cards as the {K-Spades} peeled off.

Cohen was knocked down to approximately 45,000 on the hand while Gaines vaulted to 240,000. Meanwhile, Aaron Masey has been eliminated from the tournament.

A Victory for Vogel

Level 15 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

"I won a hand! First one all day!"

So said Chris Vogel just now after surviving with a super-short stack with {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} against the {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} of Bobby Corcione. Corcione had min-raised to 4,000 from middle position, Vogel had shoved for nearly 12,000 from the big blind, Corcione called, and the board had rolled out {6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Spades} to give Vogel extended tourney life.

After his minor celebration, Vogel began to apologize to Corcione but he smilingly said not to worry. "We've all had those days," said last year's 21st-place finisher in the WSOP Main Event.

Jewell vs. Cohen: "Did I Give You too Much Credit?

Level 15 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Aryeh Cohen
Aryeh Cohen

A tale of two chip stacks tell us that Aryeh Cohen entered the day as the chip leader with 180,00 and Kurt Jewell was a re-entry that began with a measly 20,000. Now the two are even in chips. Needless to say, it's been a good Day 2 for Jewell, and it got a little better after he took a decent pot off Cohen.

We caught the action with three players in the hand and around 20,000 in the pot on a board reading {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades}. A player in middle position had checked to Jewell, and he bet 11,500. Cohen called from the cutoff, the other player folded, and it was heads-up action to the {8-Clubs} river.

Jewell immediately slid out a big bet of 28,300 and Cohen hit the tank. Several minutes passed in which Cohen counted out chips and looked back at his cards, but ultimately he decided that folding was the thing to do.

"Did I give you too much credit?" Cohen asked after he sent his cards to the muck. There was no response.

Reason Scores Double Knockout to Take Over Chip Lead

Level 14 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

A big hand just went down over at Table 14 that resulted in Ben Reason knocking out two players and taking over the chip lead here at Foxwoods.

It happened when Chris Tryba, who re-entered at the start of the day, shoved with the {K-Spades}{5-Spades} and Kevin McColgan moved all in over the top with the {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Reason woke up with {K-}{K-} in the big blind, made the call, and was pushed the hefty pot after the board ran out jack high.

Both Tryba and McColgan were eliminated on the hand while Reaso chipped up to nearly 280,000!

Antes, Please

Level 14 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

The conversation is lively over at Table 11, where another round of antes — currently 200 per player — prompted some conversation about that old WSOP story regarding Prahlad Friedman and Jeff Lisandro from late in the 2006 Main Event.

Many recall how Friedman had mistakenly accused Lisandro of not contributing an ante before a hand, which led to a lengthy, tense exchange between the pair. A younger player at the table wasn't familiar with the story's details, and so Raymer and Paredes were offering to explain.

"He said 'I'll knock your block off'" said Paredes with a wide grin, paraphrasing Lisandro's answer to having been wrongly accused, and his listener laughed in response.

Everyone's contributing their antes in orderly fashion at Table 7, and so far both Paredes and Raymer have been collecting a few more back as they've both improved upon their starting day stacks.

Jewell, Bardah Start Over, Get Started

Level 14 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Kurt Jewell and Ronnie Bardah are sitting at the same table, both having bought in at the start of play today in an effort to double up quickly with relative short stacks and get back into contention. And both are off to positive starts here in the first hour of play.

Jewell had already added chips before recently knocking out David To to push his stack up close to 100,000.

In that hand flop action saw To all in and ahead with {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} on a {J-Spades}{10-Hearts}{A-Spades} board versus Jewell's {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}. But the turn brought the {9-Spades} to improve Jewell's pair to a flush, and the {8-Spades} added a cherry on top by completing a straight flush.

"The man, the legend," said Bardah afterwards as he snapped a picture of Jewell with his phone.

Soon thereafter it was Bardah picking up pocket aces and doubling himself.

"35-ball... back in action!" said Bardah, referring to his newly-bolstered stack.

Rosenberg Runs Out of Chips, Answers

Level 14 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

"Whaddya gonna do?"

So asked Don Rosenberg of no one in particular following his last hand of the WSOP Circuit Foxwoods Main Event.

We missed the action prior to the turn, but by then Rosenberg was all in with {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} versus the {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} of John Yale and the first three community cards were {Q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

An unenviable spot no doubt for Rosenberg, and the {8-Hearts} turn card — inspiring calls for a fourth heart from him — added further to the disappointment as the river came the {5-Diamonds}. Asking his questions, Rosenberg headed railward.
