Harwood Takes from Nicholson

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

With 9,500 in the pot and a board reading {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}, David Nicholson checked from the big blind and then called when Loni Harwood bet 3,075 from the cutoff. Nicholson proceeded to lead out for 5,500 on the {3-Spades} river and Harwood called.

Nicholson tabled the {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}, but it was no good as Harwood held a wheel with the {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

No Run at Ring #7 for Masek on Day 1a, Sokoloff Also Busts

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Paul Sokoloff - Eliminated
Paul Sokoloff - Eliminated

Earlier this month 65-year-old Chris Reslock won two rings at the WSOP Circuit Harrah's Philadelphia to bring his total number of rings to seven. In the process he leapfrogged 27-year-old Alex Masek, who had held the record with six.

We haven't seen Reslock in the field today, though we assume he'll be here for the National Championship after capturing the Harrah's Philadelphia Casino Championship, but Masek took a shot at another ring.

Unfortunately for Masek, who will also be playing in the National Championship, he was unable to get anything going and was recently eliminated. It happened last level when Jonathan Tamayo, who won the Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event, opened for 1,050 and received a call from an unknown player in Seat 5. Masek then shoved for 4,200, Tamayo reshoved and the caller got out of the way. Masek tabled {K-}{Q-} and was unable to overcome the {A-}{Q-} of Tamayo. Masek's run at his seventh ring will have to wait until tomorrow.

Meanwhile on the other side of the room, a short-stacked Paul Sokoloff finally succumbed and was sent to the rail.

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
Ben Mintz
Ben Mintz

Ben Mintz is a New Orleans native, and proud of it. The very second our Live Reporting Team touched down in the Crescent City, he was tweeting at us to make sure we had an authentic, enjoyable NOLA experience.

He recently relocated in order to play online poker, and has nearly a quarter of a million dollars in live tournament earnings. His largest score came in September of 2011, when he finished 13th in the River Guaranteed $3,000,000 Poker Series, earning $35,230.

Mintz is off to a great start here on Day 1a, and sits with around 75,000 chips.

Ralph Wrecking It

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante

"Ralph's all in," Aaron Massey informed us of his older brother.

We made our way over just in time to discover that Ralph Massey had gotten his stack of 17,425 all in preflop holding the {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} and was racing against an opponent's {K-}{Q-}. The board ran out a clean {5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and Massey's jacks held to give him a sizable double.

"Boston" Rob Two-Outed

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
"Boston" Rob Mariano - Eliminated
"Boston" Rob Mariano - Eliminated

A short-stacked "Boston" Rob Mariano found himself all in with two kings against another opponent with kings and Alexey Laptev, who had {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Mariano was in good shape to survive, but the {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop gave Laptev a full house.

Mariano needed running sixes to survive, but the turn brought the {j-Hearts}, ending his tournament. A meaningless {j-Diamonds} completed the board, and he spoke briefly with Josh Arieh before exiting.

According to his Twitter account, Mariano will be reentering tomorrow.
