Kirk Acevedo
Kirk Acevedo

Yesterday, we had a non-poker celebrity sighting with Survivor's "Boston" Rob Mariano, and today we have television and movie actor Kirk Acevedo.

Acevedo, who has $59,000 in career tournament earnings, is probably best know for his role as Miguel Alvarez on the HBO show Oz. He appeared in 43 episodes from 1997-2003, and was nominated five times for the ALMA Outstanding Actor in a Television Series Award.

The 31-year old Brooklyn native has also appeared in CSI: NY, Prime Suspect, The Mentalist, Fringe, Cold Case, NYPD Blue, 24, and Law & Order SVU. He starred in every episode of the TV mini-series Band of Brothers, and is currently filming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Acevedo, who won his way into the tournament this morning, is off to a solid start, and currently sits with around 25,000 chips.

Philachack's Aces Cracked

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

When it comes to nice guys on the World Series of Poker Circuit, they don't come much nicer than Dr. Andy Philachack, who has run his own practice, Dr. Andy Chiropractic, in Garland, Texas since May 2000.

A graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas, Philachack just stopped by our desk to inform us that he was busto. Clearly disappointed, Philachack simply said he got his last 10,000 or so all in preflop holding {A-}{A-} and was up against another player's {10-}{10-}. A ten on the river put a dagger through his heart and ended his chances of winning the Harrah's New Orleans Main Event.

"See you at the WSOP," Philachack said referring to the summer series in Las Vegas.

Garcia Shoves the River

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante
Cord Garcia
Cord Garcia

We happened upon a big hand in progress over at Table 46 that saw Cord Garcia, who was recently featured in an edition of PokerNews' Circuit Grinder, chip up to nearly 60,000.

We caught the action action with around 18,000 in the pot and a board reading {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. Garcia was first to act and bet 7,000 from middle positon, the hijack called and the button opted to fold. At this point Bryan Campanello made his way over to sweat the action and informed us that he had just been eliminated. "I play so bad," he said with his eyes firmly fixed on the action.

When the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river, Garcia waited a few beats before splashing in 27,000, which had the hijack's stack of 17,000 covered. The hijack thought for a solid two minutes before folding the {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} face up. Garcia quickly slide his cards to the muck unseen and raked in the juicy pot.

Riess Rising on the Scene

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

In October, when Ryan Riess made the final table of the Horseshoe Hammond Main Event, our live reporting team couldn't find any results from him on Hendon Mob or any other online database. Likewise, we couldn't find his online poker name.

Riess went on the finish second, earning $239,063, and since that day he's recorded 13 live cashes for a total of $36,000. That's a pretty nice start to a live career.

He's in the field today, and he was just heads up with an opponent on a flop of {5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts}. The player check-called a 550-chip bet, and the turn brought the {4-Diamonds}. The player postured before reaching for chips, prompting Riess to fold {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} face up.

Despite losing that hand, Riess has been able to chip up the slightest bit, and sits with 22,000 chips.

Acevedo Flushes Some Away

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

Three bets went into preflop between Kirk Acevedo and two opponents, including Harrah's Tunica Casino Champion John Holley. Holley fired out another bet on a flop of {2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}, and only Acevedo called. Both players knuckled after the {10-Hearts} turned, and the {a-Hearts} completed the board.

Holley tossed out five yellow T1,000 chips, sending the actor into the tank.

"I put you on tens," Acevedo told Holley.

"I could have tens," Holley responded. "Or sixes, or aces..."

Acevedo grabbed a gray T5,000 chip, and flipped it forward. Holley had neither tens, sixes, nor aces, rather he had {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for a flush, prompting Acevedo to muck his hand.

"Cowboy" Showing Off

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante
"Cowboy" John Land
"Cowboy" John Land

"How much do I got?" John Land, also known as "Cowboy," asked us on our latest pass for chip counts. Of course we got it spot on, but then he added, "Watch this."

Land proceeded to raise to 800 after action had folded to him on the button, and both the blinds called. Three players watched the flop come down {4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, two checks put action on Land and he bet 650. The small blind folded, the big called and the dealer, the lovely Krista, burned and turned the {7-Spades}.

The big blind check-called a bet of 1,100 and then checked for a third time when the {Q-Hearts} completed the board on the river. Land kept the pressure on with a bet of 1,075, and it was enough to get the job done as the big blind finally folded. Land then flashed the {10}{7-Diamonds} for a pair of sevens and missed flush draw.

Garcia Doubles Kessler, Then Wins a Small One

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

After doubling up Allen Kessler, Cord Garcia and a player on his direct left were heads up on a flop of {10-Clubs}{j-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. They both checked.

The turn was the {9-Hearts}, Garcia fired out 850, and the player called.

The river was a repeat jack - the {j-Diamonds} - and Garcia tossed out another 1,175. The player tank-folded, and Garcia raked in the pot.
