Miller Bags the Overall Lead After Day 1b in the $1,700 Main Event

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Christopher Miller
Christopher Miller

It was another busy day inside the Horseshoe Tunica Hotel and Casino for Day 1b of the World Series of Poker Circuit $1,700 Main Event. More than double the entries were recorded from the first starting flight with 341 showing up today. There was no shortage of action at any point and Christopher Miller was the biggest beneficiary on the day.

Miller bagged up a whopping 514,000 chips, good enough for the overall chip lead heading into Day 2. Miller's day got off to a good start when his flopped straight got paid off by two pair. After the dinner break, Miller caught fire with big hand after big hand, including a monster pot with ace-king against his opponent's ace-queen. Miller flopped a pair of kings and when his opponent shoved into him on the turn, it was an easy call for the Alabama native.

Scott Stewart, former WSOP Main Event final tablist, returned for Day 1b after a disappointing finish on Day 1a that saw his above-average stack dissipate in the final level. Stewart took advantage of the long late registration period but wasted no time putting his chips to work.

A couple of early pots saw Stewart more than double his starting stack and he employed a lot of aggression to build his stack throughout the second half of the day. As the night was winding down again, the thought of losing his stack must have crossed his mind after dipping below 100,000 chips. However, Stewart kicked into high gear including a big four-bet against Brian Green to bag up a healthy 305,000 chips.

Scott Stewart will return with a healthy stack on Day 2

Some other big stacks moving on to Day 2 include Stephan Nussrallah (387,000), Chad Smith (376,000), Kelvin Douglas (368,000), Johnny Landreth (352,000), Bryant Kelley (347,000), and Adam Todd (331,000). Todd made his way into the chip lead with nearly 400,000 chips just after the dinner break when he coolered everyone's favorite player Chris Moneymaker. Both players made a set but Todd's was the better of the two, scoring a huge double up.

Unfortunately for Moneymaker, he was on the wrong end of another cooler in the last moments of the day when he flopped two pair against a set of eights. Moneymaker was left with just three big blinds after the hand and could not survive to make it through to Day 3. Other notables joining him on the sideline include Vincent Moscati, Brett Apter, Heather Alcorn, Irene Carey, Adam Lamphere, Denise Pratt, and Aaron Gamino.

The action will resume at 12 p.m. local time tomorrow for Day 2 with 79 players returning to their seats. They will be just five eliminations away from cracking the money and locking up at least $2,777 for a min-cash. The current schedule for Day 2 is to play ten 60-minute levels or until the final table is reached.

The PokerNews team will be back to bring you all of the live updates from the money bubble until a champion is crowned on Day 3.

Moneymaker Bows Out Near Closing Time

As the night is winding down, Chris Moneymaker was on the wrong end of another cooler. After arriving at the table, Moneymaker was counting out a stack of chips that were pushed toward Clay Henry. Moneymaker flopped two pair but Henry's set of eights earned him a double up and Moneymaker was left with just 12,000 after the hand.

A couple of hands later, Moneymaker shoved all in for 10,000 on the button and was called by the big blind. Moneymaker was slightly ahead with {a-Hearts}{7-Clubs} against his opponent's {k-Spades}{8-Hearts}. However, the board ran out {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and to give his opponent two pair and Moneymaker was eliminated.

Kelley Scores Another Monster Pot

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Bryant Kelley
Bryant Kelley

There was a raise to 6,000 and the small blind stuck in a three-bet to 18,000. Bryant Kelley just flat-called out of the big blind and the initial raiser folded. On a board that ran out {6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Spades}, the table relayed to us afterward that the small blind led out on the flop and the turn, creating a pot of well over 100,000 already.

On the river, the small blind jammed all in and Kelley made the call for his remaining 101,500 chips. The small blind reluctantly showed {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a complete bluff and Kelley held {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for two pair. Kelley pulled in a pot of over 300,000 chips and left his opponent with just one big blind.

Moneymaker Down but Not Out

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

As relayed to us through some table chat, a massive pot recently played out between Chris Moneymaker and Adam Todd. Moneymaker just got moved to the table and the two big stacks instantly clashed in a chip-leading pot.

Both players made a set on the board, with Todd's being the greater of the two. All of the chips eventually got in the middle and Todd earned himself a double up to nearly 400,000 chips. While Moneymaker was down to around 50,000 chips after the hand, he has since doubled up again and is back above the 100,000 chip mark.

In Event #4: $400 NLH One-Day, 207 entrants generated a $68,310 prize pool that was paid out to the top 32 players including Carl Masters (4th - $5,113), Joe Saleh (7th - $2,188), Heath Claxton (17th - $836), Eddie Shade (25th - $632), and Heather Hardie (32nd - $600).

Aaron Gamino wound up as the last player standing after defeating Adam Racca in heads-up play, good for $16,194 in prize money and his second gold ring. It came just a few months after he won his first at the WSOPC Horseshoe Southern Indiana stop.

“It's nice. I think I’ve cashed like half of the tournaments I’ve played recently and I’ve final tabled the fourth of them,’’ the 31-year-old Gamino said after the win. “Everyone is pretty short in the Turbo so I just played pretty straightforward and chipped up, and when I got it in a few times it held.”

Stewart Continues Running Hot

The action folded around to Darren Martin who raised it up on the button. Scott Stewart called from the big blind and they went heads-up to a flop of {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. Stewart checked to Martin who tossed in a bet of 2,000. Stewart check-raised to 5,500 and Martin called.

The turn brought the {2-Hearts} and Stewart fired out another bet of 7,000. Martin still called and the {9-Diamonds} hit the river. Stewart sized up a third barrel of 14,000 this time which put Martin in the tank for a minute before making the call. Stewart rolled over {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a rivered straight and was awarded the pot.

Blake Whittington Lays Claim to Sixth Career WSOPC Gold Ring

PokerNews is in town to live report the $1,700 Main Event here at the World Series of Poker Circuit at Horseshoe Tunica, but that is just one of the gold ring events that will have played out by the end of the series.

In Event #2: $400 No-Limit Hold’em (One-Day), 271 runners created an $89,430 prize pool that was paid out amongst the top 41 players including Craig Welko (11th - $1,445), Edward Moses (23rd - $792), James Mackey (26th - $718), Donnie Phan (28th - $666), and John Nowak (39th - $609).

In the end, well-known circuit grinder Blake Whittington defeated Andrew Brinkley in heads-up play to win the $19,786 top prize and his sixth gold ring, the third of which came at Horseshoe Tunica.

“It feels very good, it feels pretty special to win another one here. I passed up going to Borgata because I needed points here. It’s nice to get a win in the books, for sure,” the 28-year-old Whittington said after his win.

He continued: “At the start of the final table, I got a double through the chip leader. Then he just started beating up on everyone, and he just amassed like half the chips in play with eight left. It was a really tough final table. The three-handed battle also went on for so long and nobody would bust, the short stack always just won the all-in. It was very grindy, I just tried to keep it as low variance as possible. I was just lucky enough to be on top after all of that.”

PokerNews is in town to live report the $1,700 Main Event here at the World Series of Poker Circuit at Horseshoe Tunica, but that is just one of the gold ring events that will have played out by the end of the series.

In Event #8: $600 No-Limit Hold’em attracted 238 runners and created a $122,570 prize pool. That was paid out to the top 36 players including Matt South (4th - $9,001), Blake Barousse (8th - $3,057), Tiffany Keathley (13th - $1,692), Russ Head (20th - $1,274), Brett Apter (23rd - $1,144), and Adam Lamphere (30th - $993).

In the end, Sam Washburn beat Trent Bennett in heads-up play to win the title for $28,101 and his second gold ring (the first came two years ago when he won the WSOPC Horseshoe Tunica Main Event for $188,068). The win came just a couple months after he won the RGPS Hard Rock Tulsa stop.

“This was huge, I wanted to win in Tunica. It was very exciting, there were good players,” Washburn said after his victory. “I’m retired and I play for fun. I’m strictly a recreational player. I probably do seven or eight events a year, that’s about it. But I’ve had a lot of success in the last couple of years, it’s been great.”
