Olive the Chips

A Very Dry Martini
A Very Dry Martini
Kory Mitchell may be relying on a little more than his cards to propel him to the final table. We recently took note of an unusual trinket he is using to cap his cards and chip stack. From our vantage point, it looked very much like a cocktail olive, the kind you'd find in a martini. When we asked about it, Mitchell gave us the story.

The item is actually a plastic olive, given to him by his girlfriend. It has the word "you" written on it, and if you think it through, perhaps you can work out the tongue-in-cheek meaning. He told us she'd be reading this, so Meg, if you are, thanks for giving us something fun to write about for just a few minutes.

Henning Granstad Eliminated in 18th Place ($9,460)

Henning Granstad Eliminated
Henning Granstad Eliminated
Henning Granstad and Kyle Kloeckner got it all in preflop. Kloeckner held {A-Clubs} {A-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {8-Spades}, while Granstad was all in and at risk with {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {8-Hearts}.

The board didn't do it for Granstad. It came down {2-Spades} {3-Spades} {5-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}, and it spelled the end for Mr. Granstad. For his efforts over the last two days, he will cash out nearly $10,000.

Gabe Costner Eliminated in 20th Place ($7,358)

Gabe Costner lost two pots in a row, and has been eliminated in 20th place. In the first, he was in a battle of the blinds, and his {J-Spades} {8-Diamonds} failed to hold up against the {9-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} of David Bergerson. Bergerson made two pair and took a big chunk of Costner's stack.

In the very next hand, Allen Cunningham opened from the cutoff seat, and Costner reraised the pro. Cunningham pushed back enough to endanger Costner's tournament existence, and all the chips got into the middle.

Costner tabled {A-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}, and Cunningham had him exactly where he wanted him with {10-Clubs} {8-Hearts}. The board favored Cunningham; it came {5-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {10-Hearts} {K-Clubs}, giving him the only pair, and sending Costner to the cashier.

For his efforts yesterday and today, Costner earns $7,358 and the right to boast about another deep run in a tournament.

Steve Hudak Eliminated in 21st Place ($7,358)

In another battle of the blinds, Steve Hudak and Kyle Hegeman got it all in, with Hudak at risk of elimination. He held {10-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}, and was trailing the {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades} of Hegeman.

The community cards were {2-Spades} {9-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {6-Spades} {9-Diamonds}.

Hudak failed to improve, and he is eliminated in 21st place, taking home $7,358.

Penly, Kelly Trade Places

Omaha -

Lennart Holtkamp raises the full pot from middle position, making it 8,400 to go. David Penly is on the button, and he calls when the action returns to him. Next is John-Paul Kelly, and he raises the pot on top -- 27,600 more. Holtkamp folds, and Penly goes into the tank. He asks for a count, and learns that Kelly has 27,000 remaining. Instead of pushing back though, he makes the flat-call, and the two men go to the flop.

As the dealer burns the first card, Kelly slides those 27,000 chips into the pot dark, and sees the flop come {4-Spades} {10-Clubs} {J-Hearts}. Penly didn't get much help, but he makes the call, and the two men turn over their hands:

Penly: {A-Spades} {3-Spades} {K-Clubs} {4-Clubs}
Kelly: {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {8-Clubs}

Kelly is a slight favorite, and he locks up the pot when the turn and river come {8-Spades} and {8-Hearts}. With that win, he chips up to 131,000, while Kelly has dropped to 90,000.
