John Phan Plays Crazy Eights

In a late-position battle, John Phan and another player get involved in a raising war preflop, and eventually get all their chips in the middle. Phan shows down {8-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, while his opponent tables {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.

The flop hits both men when it lands {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. Phan catches top pair but the two diamonds give his opponent a flush draw. The turn card improves Phan further with the {8-Spades}, and the river seals the deal when he finds the case eight, {8-Hearts}. Quads are plenty good enough for Pham, and he rakes in a pot worth close to 40,000.

The Shark Was Hungry

Humberto Brenes, an hour late back from his dinner break, pushed his remaining 2,100 chips with {5-Spades}{6-Clubs} and was called by the player in the small blind with {j-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. The board came {J-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and Brenes was sent packing.

Battle of the Blinds Sends "Rico" Packing

Action is folded around to the blinds, and the small blind makes the call. Douglas "Rico" Carli moves all in from the big blind for his remaining 4,000 in chips with {8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. His opponent makes the call with {A-Spades}{5-Hearts}.

The flop pairs both players as it falls {6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{A-Clubs}. The turn {J-Diamonds} and river {7-Spades} aren't what Rico wanted, and he heads to the rail.

Bolotin Knocks One Off

Alex Bolotin called the preflop all-in of a short-stacked player with {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}. The player at risk held {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, and was looking to double up.

No such luck though, as the board ran out {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, and Bolotin sent the player to the sidelines.

Shorr as You're Born

In late position, and first into the pot, Shannon Shorr pushes all in for 15,050. He gets one taker, the player on the button, who calls him down with {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. Shorr is in nice shape to double with his {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}.

The flop comes down safe for Shorr: {J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Spades}. The turn card is a bit more troublesome though. The {Q-Diamonds} pairs his opponent's kicker and puts Shorr at risk of elimination, needing to draw to a straight, a flush, or his king.

Salvation comes on the river when the {10-Spades} fills up that straight, and doubles Shorr up to approximately 31,000.

Schoenberg Takes a Hike

From under the gun, Erica Schoenberg moves all in with her last 2,900. Further down the line, another player reraises all in over the top and everyone ducks out of the way. The cards are turned over with Schoenberg's {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts} trailing the {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} of her opponent.

The board pairs her when it comes {8-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts}, but the {A-Hearts} and {9-Spades} that follow do nothing to improve her plight. Much to the chagrin of her tablemates, Erica Schoenberg has been eliminated from this event.
