Big-field Wednesday at the Rio in $2,000 No-Limit Event

Will Durkee hopes to defend his $2,000 NLHE title
Will Durkee hopes to defend his $2,000 NLHE title
The first Wednesday of the 2008 World Series of Poker serves up a $2,000 no-limit hold'em tourney, a popular event that is sure to draw a large field to the Amazon for the event's noon start. Expect the giant hall to be filled nearly to capacity for this one, with returning events from later day getting underway as a few tables become available.

Last year, this event drew 1,531 entrants, and it was won by Will Durkee, who took home a winner's check for $566,916. A similar payday awaits this year's winner, and PokerNews will have the stories, every step of the way.

Almost Time

The doors have just been opened, and a sea of people have begun filing into the Amazon Room. As with Event #2, there will be some overflow into the Tropical Room this afternoon. We already have over 1,300 players registered, and registration will continue until the end of the second level. So, we'll have to wait until then to give you the final tally, but we expect to approach or surpass last year's field size for the same event.

We'll be beginning play in just over 10 minutes, so it's time to get settled in!

Scanning the Field

As we let our eyes wander across the vast expanse of the Amazon Room, a few notable faces (and voices) stick out.

So far, we've spotted Ted Lawson, Antonio Esfandiari, Joe Sebok, Billy Gazes, Bill Edler, Lou "The Big Easy" Esposito, JC Tran, Jonathan Little, Liz Lieu, Event #1 finalist Kathy Liebert, and the unmistakable Humberto Brenes.

A Chip and Two Chairs

Over in the Tropical Room, a couple players are looking to get any edge possible. Billy Gazes and Ryan D'Angelo both have added an extra chair on top of their own, giving them a head up on the competition. The tournament staff gave them a double look, but so far are allowing the men to keep their double seating arrangements.

Growing and Growing

We're fast approaching 1,600 players in the event and still have a while to go before registration closes. Here are some more notable names.

Dario Minieri
Minh Nguyen
Lee Markholt
Victor Ramdin
Amir Vahedi

The last two champions of the Main Event have both just arrived as well. Jerry Yang, 2007 Main Event winner and Jamie Gold, 2006 Main Event winner can be found amidst the large field of players.

"Seat open!"

We're only 30 minutes into the event and already the dealers are yelling "Seat open!" often as players are busting fairly quickly. The Rio dealers must do a good job of dealing out some good hands to people!

The Champ Scoops a Pot

Jerry Yang limped under the gun. After another player limped, a third player made it 250 to go. Yang called, as did the middle-position limper.

The flop came {A-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {5-Hearts} and Yang checked as did the middle-position player. The preflop raiser bet out 500 and Yang raised to 1,200. Both of his opponents folded and Yang scooped the pot.
