Stubbs Snubbed

A player in early position, Mark Stubbs, limps into the pot, and he and the big blind see a cheap flop of {A-Spades} {7-Hearts} {4-Spades} .

The big blind, Joe Cutler, passes the betting, and Stubbs puts out 5,000 chips. Cutler check-raises to 16,000, and Stubbs moves all in for 45,000. Cutler calls, and the hands are turned over:

Cutler: {4-Diamonds} {7-Clubs}
Stubbs: {Q-Spades} {J-Spades}

The turn and river both miss Stubbs when they come {3-Hearts} , {K-Clubs} respectively. Mark Stubbs has been knocked out of the field, while Cutler has upped his stack to 136,500.

Players Falling Fast

Today's action has been progressing at a furious pace. We are already down nearly 50 players in just the first 90 minutes of play.

We pick up the action in another all-in hand.

Claudio Fonseca limps in from middle position, and Derek Feldman is the man who moves all in from the cutoff for another 7,400. Fonseca makes the call and tables {Q-Hearts} {10-Hearts} , while Feldman is at risk but ahead with {A-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} .

The board nails Fonseca squarely when it comes {9-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} , giving him top pair and a flush draw.

The turn changes the tides, as the {A-Clubs} puts Feldman back on top.

However, the river makes Fonseca the winner, when the {Q-Clubs} gives him trips, and eliminates Feldman from the tournament.

The Volatility of Theo Tran

Theo Tran
Theo Tran
It is apparent from the early action that Theo Tran is more than happy to push around his big stack.

He has been up and down several times already, and he just became involved in another big pot, this time with his tournament life on the line.

He and Rocco Pace got all their chips into the pot preflop. Tran had been chipped down to 62,800, and he mentioned, "I need to get my chips back," as he pushed in and turned over {10-Hearts} {10-Clubs} . Pace tabled {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} , and he and Tran were racing for a big pot.

Tran held when the board came {8-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {5-Clubs} , and he has more than doubled back up to 150,000.

Theo Tran Takes a Hit

James Campbell just raked in a huge pot from Theo Tran. With a board of {8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}{4-Clubs}{j-Hearts} and pocket sixes in front of Tran and eights for Campbell, Tran counted up more than 40,000 from his stack and sent it over to Campbell, who is up to more than 99,000. Tran has a little bit more than 60,000.

[Removed:327] Earns a Double-up

From middle position, Jamie Robbins opens the betting with a raise to 5,100. Hien Tran calls from the button, but [Removed:326] goes all in for 11,700 more. Robbins is the only caller, and he shows down {6-Clubs} {8-Clubs}. [Removed:327] has {A-Clubs} {10-Hearts}.

[Removed:327] catches a pair on the flop when it comes down {10-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {K-Spades}. The turn pairs his opponent, {6-Hearts}, but the river {J-Spades} misses both players.

[Removed:326] drags the pot, and doubles up to 41,000.

Shorr 'Nuff

Shannon Shorr just eliminated a player, calling an all-in with {A-Clubs}{a-Hearts}.
Randy Pfeifer shoved his last 15,000 with {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} and was called by Shorr, who was in the small blind. The board of {q-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} was no help to Pfeifer, who finished in 146th place and collected $3,476.
Shorr is up to 48,000.

Phan Tries Again

John Phan tried one more time to double a player up. He and Christopher Kolesnikoff got all their chips in, Phan with {3-?} {3-?} and Kolesnikoff with {A-?} {K-?} .

The flop was all rags, but the turn struck Phan with a set when he caught another {3-?} , leaving his opponent drawing dead.

After doubling two players up in short order, Phan finally gets to drag in a pot and send a player home.

Aaron Kanter is Out

Aaron Kanter, who finished fourth place in the 2005 Main Event, was eliminated when he shoved his last 8,000 and was called by Candido Pondo, who moved all in and barely had Kanter covered. Kanter, who has had success online, was sent to the rail when his A-5 couldn't overcome Pondo's A-J.
