A Home Game Feeling

Robert Williamson III
Robert Williamson III
Walking by Robert Williamson's table T.J. Cloutier — who is not in the event — took stock of the players there.
"Chau-Chau (Chau Giang), Robert, Steve (Zolotow)..." Cloutier said. "The're are not too many faces you don't know."

"I walked to the first person I didn't know, I just didn't know his first name," Williamson said. "I shook his hand. Now him and I are old friends."

The Mouth Benched

Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow
An extremely fit-looking Mike Matusow is seated at Table 14, fresh from winning his $100,000 weight-loss bet that he made with Ted Forrest one year ago. Matusow dropped over 50 pounds by eating healthy and running upwards of six miles each day. As he approached the June 3 deadline for the bet, though, Matusow was still about 8 pounds away and went on a 96-hour fast until his final weigh-in.

Matusow was just heard regaling his table with the story of the last four days of the bet, which unfortunately led to some health problems. Matusow saw a doctor, who told him he couldn't run for 12 days while his body recovered.

"If I knew I couldn't run for 12 days, I never would have done it" the newly minted workout addict said.

Slow and Steady

In the early rounds of limit tournaments most players are looking to stay out of trouble. While many will just sit and fold their cards, some have found other ways to occupy their minds. Tom "durrr" Dwan has been popping out of his seat to visit friends, while Greg "FBT" Mueller is chowing down on a chinese chicken salad as well as what looks like some delicious sushi. Many tables have also been paid a visit by the legendary T.J. Cloutier, whom we don't believe is actually playing in this event. Nevertheless he's making the rounds and chatting to old friends as the minutes remaining in this first level tick away.

Clairvoyants on Table 6

Omaha-8:

Robert Williamson III and Chau Giang were facing off in an Omaha-8 hand when Williamson called for the {2-Hearts} on the turn. BAM! The {2-Hearts} hit! One street later, Giang started calling for the {A-Spades} on the river. BAM! The {A-Spades} hit!

Several minutes later, the whole table was still buzzing about the apparent clairvoyant abilities of their opponents.

Chips Subtracted From Late Add Watkinson

In Omaha-8, after four players limp to see a flop of {4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, Lee Watkinson bets out and is called by two players. The turn is the {A-Clubs} and all players check. The river is the {8-Diamonds}. A player in the small blind bets and Watkinson calls.
The small blind shows {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} and Watkinson mucks. Watkinson is down to 12,000.

So that Whole 20-Minute Thing? Not So Much

I think everyone, players, dealers and reporters alike were confused about the complex structure that has been instituted for this first-of-its-kind event. But things seem to have settled down quite a bit.

For instance the whole 20 minutes for flop games/20 for stud games/20 for NLHE and PLO structural oddity seems to be just that. The games are simply rotating every eight hands no matter where the clock happens to be.

I spoke with Tournament Director Jack Effel and he confirmed that the 20-minute sub-levels were never part of the plan for today, despite rumors to the contrary.

No Chips, No Chair

One player who is still looking for her seat is WSOP bracelet winner Katja Thater.

"How can I win? I have no chair" she remarked, pointing to an empty spot in her assigned seat at Table 24. "No chips AND no chair!"
