Born on the 4th of July

Andrew Schoepfer is in the tournament field today. Schoepfer was born on July 4, 1987 -- exactly 21 years ago. Playing in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker is an exciting way to celebrate a 21st birthday.

Black Out

Black Out
Black Out
A early-position player raised it up to 300 and two middle-position players flat-called, as did Andy Black on the button.

They saw a flop of {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, and one of the middle-position players opened with a bet of 1,000. One folded before Andy Black made it 3,000 to go. The preflop aggressor folded, and the MP player moved all in. Black made the call for his tournament life as the cards were tabled:

Black: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}
MP: {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The {2-Spades} fell on the turn and the {5-Spades} on the river gave his opponent a full house, sending Andy Black to a very early exit.

Double Up for Davidson

On a flop of {9-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, a player in early position checked, William Davidson bet 7,250, and his opponent, who had Davidson covered, pushed all in. Davidson made the call.

Davidson showed {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} for top set, putting him well ahead of his adversary's {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}. The river was the {8-Spades}, and Davidson doubled up to 32,000.

A Knockdown but no Knockout

Jeff Fenech was involved in a pot with a player on the button. The turn had just been dealt giving us a {5-Spades} {9-Spades} {A-Hearts} {5-Hearts} and Fenech bet 1,000, which was called. The river came {J-Spades}, prompting Fenech to bet 3,500. His opponent called.

Fenech tabled {A-Spades} {A-Clubs} for a turned full house. He took down the pot as his opponent showed {J-Hearts} {10-Hearts} for two pairs. Fenech is up to 25,000 now.

Fenech then engaged in some table conversation about his recent fight comeback victory and his victory in a recent celebrity poker free-roll where he won his seat for this tournament. Another player at the table commented, "Oh great, he can fight and he's good at poker."

Tuan Le Outchipped

Tuan Le in Event #1
Tuan Le in Event #1
In early position, a player raises to 300 and Tuan Le calls on the button. The big blind also calls.

The flop is {8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and it's checked to Tuan, who bets 800. The big blind calls and the EP folds.

The turn is {2-Diamonds} and it's checked to Tuan, who bets 2,200. The big blind raises to 7,200 and Tuan calls.

The river is {5-Diamonds} and the big blind bets all in. Tuan folds and has only 5,000 left.

Brutal

After a {8-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} flop Jimmy Haseth and another player got all the money in the middle. Haseth had an overpair with {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}. Thing is, his opponent had a bigger overpair--{A-Hearts} {A-Spades}. The turn brought the {A-Clubs}, giving the other player a set and all but ending Haseth's Main Event.

That is, until the {10-Spades} spiked on the river, giving Haseth a one-card straight. Jimmy let out on of the louder yells we've heard in the Amazon Room in quite some time as he scooped the big pot. "I knew you had me beat," Haseth said, which probably wasn't much comfort to his now-crippled opponent.

Ladowsky Continues to Run Good

On a turn of {6-Hearts}{10-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{5-?}, Stephen Ladowsky checks and Greg Mueller bets 600. Ladowsky calls.

The river is {J-Hearts} and Ladowsky checks. Mueller bets 1,700 and Ladowsky calls.

Ladowsky has {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and Mueller has {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. Mueller is down to 15,000 and Ladowsky has 47,000.

Rocky Start for Gold

Jamie Gold
Jamie Gold
Now that Jamie Gold's table is finally playing with the correct blinds, the pots have gotten a bit bigger. With Gold playing every hand, his stack has taken a hit.

After three players checked a flop of {A-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {8-Spades}, Gold bet 1,000 when the turn fell {Q-Clubs}. He got one caller, who called again on the river {9-Spades} and showed {A-Diamonds} {10-Spades}. Gold nodded and mucked his hand.

He's down to about 14,600, but let everyone at his table know that he started the day in the same seat back in 2006, when he went on to win the Main Event.

Dewey Tomko Set Up

Four players saw a flop, including Dewey Tomko. On a flop of {3-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}, a player in the big blind bet out 300 and only Tomko called.

The turn fell the {6-Clubs} and the big blind bet out 1,100. Tomko again called.

When the river fell the {7-Clubs}, Tomko called a bet of 1,500 from his opponent. Tomko's opponent showed {3-Hearts} {3-Spades} and Tomko mucked his hand.

After the hand, Tomko is down to 16,900 chips.

You Wat?

Down but not out
Down but not out
Last years eighth-place finisher, Lee Watkinson, has lost over half his stack already. He called a raise to 300 whilst on the button from a player in middle position.

On the {6-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} Watkinson bet 1,500 once it was checked to him. He bet 3,000 when it was checked to him again on the {J-Diamonds} turn. He was called again before the {4-Spades} dropped on the river.

This time he bet 5,000 when it was checked to him and he was called once more. He flipped over {3-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} for a baby flush, but it was no good against his opponent's nut flush with {A-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}.

Watkinson down to 9,800.
