20 Minute Break; Possible Restroom Wars

Play will recommence in 20 minutes.

On the way out, Jan Fisher was telling the floor that due to the ludicrous number of gents milling around during the break in today's $1,500 event, the Ladies' room in the hallway has become a Gents'! This convenience inconvenience won't stop Jan Fisher, apparently, nor would it would me if I were in a hand.

Chufty to Chop

Richard 'Chufty' Ashby is another one of those online-all-rounders who's been spotted in the far corner playing on Barry Greenstein's table. Pot limit Omaha might be his regular game, but limit hi-low/stud seems to have tempted him to the game. Ashby does appear to be playing injured, though as he has bandaged fingers. Perhaps they got caught in the till?

In fact Greenstein and Ashby just tangled in a Stud-8 hand as follows:

Caught from sixth street when a nice little pot was brewing, Ashby bet as he picked up a four, leaving their hands looking like:

Ashby: {7-Spades} {7-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {4-Hearts}
Greenstein: {8-Spades} {5-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {2-Spades}

Greenstein made the call, and they received their final cards. Ashby bet again on the river, but this time found Greenstein pausing and then throwing out a raise. He made the call fairly swiftly, showing his [{7-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {6-Hearts}] for the full house. Greenstein flipped his low-winning [{5-Spades} {2-Clubs} {4-Spades}] and they chopped it up.

Can You Play This Online?

A number of young players known just as well or better by their online handles have dipped a toe into the Omaha/Stud hi-low event. Most recently spotted: Aurangzeb 'Ozzy87' Sheikh, who's only just legally able to take his seat in WSOP events. His table might not recognise - yet(even people he's tangled with online might not) but he's definitely one to watch.

More players of note:

CK Hua
Perry Friedman
Lee Childs
Jason Mercier
Thor Hansen
Vitaly Lunkin (fresh from taking down the $40k Anniversary Tournament bracelet)

Eights Up in Stud-8 Good for Carol Kline

A strange hand saw an unknown opponent take the call or check-call route to the river vs. Carol Kline in Stud hi-low. Eventually their hands looked like so:

Kline [XXX] {2-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {6-Diamonds}
Opponent [XXX] {6-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {5-Clubs}

Kline showed {8-Clubs} {8-Spades} {2-Clubs} which was good for both low and high (two pair) despite her opponent's open nines. We'll never know what he had as his cards hit the muck faster than the race to the men's room at the dinner break.

Berry Good

Berry Johnston called a bet in the small blind from mid-position Dutch Boyd just now on a {8-Clubs} {4-Spades} {K-Clubs} flop. The turn was the {8-Spades} . Now Johnston bet out, called by Boyd. The river came the {9-Diamonds} and once again Johnston led out, and got a call.

He showed {A-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {3-Hearts} which was good for the whole pot as the low had failed to materialise on board.

Mortensen-d it

The WSOP Main Event, the WPT $25k Final, $5k Limit Hold'em bracelet event, you name it, Carlos Mortensen's won it, or come close. Now looking for his third bracelet, will the Omaha/Stud Hi-Low 8 or Better be the game to give it to him?

He's had a good start at least: he took down an Omaha pot which started off three-way to a {2-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {4-Spades} flop. It was checked round on the {3-Clubs} turn, but ended up with Mortensen betting the {A-Diamonds} river and getting one caller, who mucked when he showed a wheel-y {5-Clubs} {3-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} .

That'll Teach Minieri to Be Late

Minieri-n the right place at last
Minieri-n the right place at last
Italian poker hero Dario Minieri just strolled in to take his seat but found it was already taken. The player in seat 1 showed no sign of worry, continuing to be massaged right up until the moment the floor sent him off to his correct table and gave Minieri a stack blinded off to the required amount for a late entry.

This situation was made more difficult as the original player in the seat had lost a few chips and was going to have to leave them in their new home stacks and take his own remaining chips off the table... that's what happens when you're late. Someone takes your seat, chips up your table and then vanishes.

Also at this table - Allen Kessler and Sebastian Ruthenberg (winner of EPT Barcelona and consistent casher in pretty much anything Europe has to offer). Should be a fun one to watch.

Big Names Take their Time, and their Seats

As the first level draws to a close, the empty seats are being taken, for the most part, by players who are household names (at least in the households of the other people in the Brasilia room). Among them:

Jennifer Harman
Rob Hollink
Jon 'Pearljammer' Turner
Layne Flack
Daniel Negreanu
Chad Brown
Marcel Luske
Andy Bloch
Shannon Shorr
Gavin Smith
Mike Sexton
Tony Ma
Sam Grizzle
