Watching Out for de Wolfe

Earlier a player limped from the button, the small blind completed, and Roland de Wolfe -- winner of his first WSOP bracelet just two days ago in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo 8-or-better (Event No. 27) -- put in a raise, making his opponents both scatter.

De Wolfe was in the big blind again and once again the table folded to the short-stacked player on the button. He shot de Wolfe a quick look, then folded. The small blind then made a small raise, which de Wolfe quickly called.

The flop came {3-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}. The SB checked, and de Wolfe grabbed a light blue (500) chip and tossed it out, the chip rolling to the center of the table and resting with the others. The SB quickly folded, and de Wolfe showed him one card -- the {6-Hearts}.

"I didn't want anything to do with that," said de Wolfe's opponent.

De Wolfe is off to a good start, up past the 10,000-chip mark.

Grospellier's Stack Grows

Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier raised to 400 from late position, and both the button and big blind called. The flop came {3-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{10-Hearts}, and the big blind led out for 750. Grospellier promptly raised to 2,875, causing the both of his opponents to fold.

Grospellier has 9,000.

More Faces

Others in today's field include Humberto Brenes, Katja Thater, Antonio Esfandiari, Greg Raymer, Isaac Haxton, Vanessa Rousso, Men Nguyen, Phil Hellmuth, Cliff Josephy, and Dennis Phillips.

Miami John Cernuto had been here, but he was recently eliminated in a hand by Anthony Yeh. Yeh is up over 20,000 now.

Patience from Phillips

The table folded to Dennis Phillips -- sporting a clean new St. Louis Cardinals cap to replace the autographed one from last year's WSOP -- who raised to 350 from the cutoff. The player in the small blind reraised to 1,275, and the BB tanked for quite a while before folded.

Phillips, too, paused for 20 seconds or so before letting it go. He has about 6,000 at the moment.

The Magician's Trick Revealed

We caught up with this curious hand on the turn with the board showing {8-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Alex Kravchenko checked, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari bet 750, and Kravchenko called. That made the pot about 2,000.

The river brought the {7-Hearts}, and Kravchenko again checked. Esfandiari then shoved his whole stack -- 5,100 -- the big overbet sending Kravchenko into the tank. Finally the Russian emerged to make the call, turning over just {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. He'd guessed right, as Esfandiari turned over {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}.

"Good luck, gentlemen," said Esfandiari as he departed. Kravchenko now has 14,000.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

"Oh my God. I can't believe what just happened.... Okay, fish number one just limped in with aces. Then fish number two just called with queen-jack from the button..."

Thus began yet another bustout story from Event No. 34. We're only 15 minutes into the fourth level, but it appears we have already lost over a third of our starting field of 2,095. At the moment, 1,330 players remain.

Money (That's What I Want)

Raising to Know Where You're At

Phil Hellmuth limped in from early position, and a player behind him raised to 700. It folded back around to Hellmuth who shoved his entire stack, a reraise to about 4,500.

"I'm steaming right now. I can't even see straight. What country are we in?" said Hellmuth. His opponent folded, and Hellmuth showed his {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}.

Hellmuth has 6,500.
