Break It Up

Like sheep being herded through a narrow gate, the 2,700-something players are piling out the double doors for their first break of the day. It'll be 30 minutes to accommodate the mass of humanity.

Appleman Shrugs and Heads for the Cash Games

We spotted Mickey Appleman for the first time today just in time to see his elimination from the tournament. Appleman bet 500 on a board of {K-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds} after his lone opponent checked. That opponent raised to 1,500. Appleman threw in a call, leaving himself 175 behind. That 175 went in on the {3-Spades} river. Appleman's {K-Hearts} {8-Hearts}, a pair of kings, was out-turned by his opponent's {A-Spades} {10-Hearts}, trip tens.

Appleman, wearing a red sweatshirt instead of his usual Horseshoe jacket, shrugged and headed off towards the red section of the room, where the cash games are located.

Limit Hold'em in a No-Limit Tournament

Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert was one of three players in late position to take a flop of {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds}. Liebert had second action and bet 600 after her first opponent checked. After the button player folded, things turned curious.

The third player in the hand check-raised Liebert the minimum, to 1,200. Liebert responded with a minimum three-bet to 1,800. Her opponent called.

The turn came {2-Clubs} and after a check, Liebert moved all in for 1,125. Her opponent open-mucked {A-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}, allowing Liebert to drag the pot and increase her count to 6,500.

A Note on Numbers

We're a half hour into Level 3 now. There's been no official word on the number of entrants from the tournament staff, but late registration is closed. The tournament clock shows 2,717 entrants. We heard through the grapevine that a few people got shut out of this event, which leads us to guess it was capped at 272 tables (2,720 players).

Obviously there have been plenty of eliminations since the start of play. Yet oddly the space on the tournament clock which should show the number of players remaining in the tournament is blank.

Gowen Busto

It was a quick afternoon in Event 39 for one Cyclona Gowen. She moved all in for 600 total after an open-raise to 400 by an early-position player was called by one other player. Both of them called Gowen's reraise.

On a flop of {j-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} the under-the-gun player moved in, driving the third player out of the pot. The cards were then opened:

Gowen: {j-Diamonds} {9-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}

The board bricked out, sending Gowen to the rail.

Table Talk

Always one for a good tale, Gavin Smith was just regaling his table with a story about a recent prop bet (something he's also rather fond of). Smith wagered $1,000 against a young military kid on which man could take the most slaps to the stomach. When neither of them were backing down from hand slaps, they switched over to clipboards to get things moving.

Smith told his table that the kid was never going to back down, so he admitted defeat and paid his bet. Down $1,000, Gavin still had to live with the pain of broken blood vessels in his abdomen for more than a month.

Oh, and for what it's worth, the red-bellied pro is sitting on 10,200 chips right now.

Double or Nothing for Sevillano

Ed Sevillano got all in before the flop for just less than 4,500. He held ace-king, and he was in bad shape when a player looked him up with the dominating pocket kings.

Fortunately for Sevillano, he managed to pull an ace on the flop to earn himself a timely double up to 9,200.
