Speaking of Which...

Amarillo Slim - No Bracelet This Year
Amarillo Slim - No Bracelet This Year
A short-stacked Amarillo Slim Preston pushed his final few chips into the middle with {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and got called by Don Animette who was holding {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}.

When neither player connected on a ragged board, Slim's day was done and Animette was sitting on a stack of 8,400.

Attrition is Taking a Toll

We started today's event with 2,707 players each anteing up $1,000 for their chance at WSOP glory. But with just over two hours of play left in Day 1, a gold bracelet just wasn't in the cards for most players.

At this point in the evening, we've lost more than 3/4 of the field, with many more players likely to leave before we're done.

Chop Chop, Chop Chop

Walking past Amarillo Slim's table, we saw him get all in with ace-king off suit and get called by ace-king off suit.

When the board ran {2-Spades}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{J-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, he chopped the pot and kept his chances alive. On an adjacent table, a player moved all in with king-jack off suit and got called by pocket jacks.

King-jack took the lead when he flopped a straight on a 9-10-queen board, but the jacks caught up as the last two streets came king-10.

Shirley Rosario Steals the Blinds

With her stack getting short, Shirley Rosario moved all in from under the gun for 4,600. She had enough fold equity to push everyone else out of the pot, allowing her to successfully steal a round of blinds.

On the other side of the room, Amarillo Slim Preston is clinging to a short stack of just 2,200 and is looking for a spot to get his chips in the middle.

Another Win for Enright

Barbara Enright just told us about another she recently played.

Enright said she called a 900 preflop raise and called an all-in shove on a board of Jack-8-x. Enright showed aces to her opponent's pocket 8s, but took the lead when she spiked an ace on the turn. A blank on the river gave her the pot, and she now has 20,000.

Across the room, Jesse Jones has built his stack to 22,000 after out-flopping his opponent's pocket deuces and hitting two pair with 8-9 off suit.

Ace-King Good for Enright

When a player in middle position pushed all in for 2,550, Barbara Enright made the call.

Enright: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Neither player connected on a board of {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}, and Enright's ace-king was enough to take the pot. She now has 7,800.

A Chat with Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer just gave a table full of amateur players a great thrill. While hanging on the rail looking for a friend who may or may not still be in the tournament, Raymer was joking and sharing stories with his fans.

"They're great people and I love them all," Raymer said, adding that he still has at least five years before he can play the event.

"I'm sure it's fun," he said, adding "But if I have my choice, I'd probably rather play something like the $10K PLO. I probably have a better long-term shot of winning a bracelet in an event like that as opposed to beating 2,700 players."

Bill Derego Builds a Stack

When his opponent bet 850 pre, Bill Derego made the call and saw a flop of {6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{J-Spades}. His opponent bet another 850, and Derego called again.

Derego called a third 850 bet on the turn, which came {2-Hearts}, and both players checked the river, which came {7-Diamonds}.

Derego's opponent showed {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}, but couldn't beat Derego's {5-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Derego now has 26,000.

Other big stacks include Scott Mayfield with 28,000 and Shawn Burns with 29,000.
