Event #13: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em

Day 1a Started

Bring on the Masses

Welcome back to the Rio for Event #13 of the 2010 World Series of Poker, the second $1,000 no-limit hold'em event so far. Last Saturday's event attracted 4,345 players and we can only expect the same massive numbers from this one.

Plenty of recognizable faces will be in the field today, as well as amateurs taking their seats at the felt in the Rio for the first time. No matter what, whether they are a pro or not, they are all sitting down with the same dream - to take the biggest chunk of the prizepool home with them and to snap the clasps of the coveted gold bracelet around their wrists.

Play is expected to begin at noon local time here in Las Vegas and you can be sure that PokerNews will be in the thick of it all, providing you the best and most extensive coverage live from the floor of the Rio at the 2010 World Series of Poker.

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Tournament Director Jack Effel just gave the announcement to shuffle up and deal. There are still quite a few empty seats, as players will likely trickle in over the next couple hours, but the action is under way in the Pavilion Room.

Pros Spotted

As more and more players trickle into the Pavilion Room, a number of recognizable faces can be seen at the tables.

David Singer, Vitaly Lunkin, Joe Sebok, Mark Seif, Matt Vengrin, Tony Cosineau, Barry Shulman, Liv Boeree, and Chad Batista are just a few of the names that are currently at the tables.

Online Pros Battle It Out

Much like Table 43, Table 7 currently sports a roster of online pros. David "doc" Sands, Jamie "TheCronic420" Rosen, Dan "djk123" Kelly, and Matt "mlagoo" Lagarde were all seated at Table 7, and it didn't take long for the fireworks to start.

From middle position, Sands raised and was reraised by Kelly in the big blind. Sands shoved all in for 2,500 and was called by Kelly.

Kelly: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Sands: {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}, giving Sands a pair of aces on the river. Kelly was down to 700 after the hand, while Sands doubled to 5,000.

The very next hand, Kelly went all in for his remaining 700 with {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and was called by Sands, who held {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

The {Q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop was no help to Kelly. Both the {5-Hearts} and {9-Clubs} on the river sealed Kelly's fate and he was eliminated early on Day 1. Meanwhile, Sands is up to 5,800.

Table 43 Gets Tougher

Kevin "BelowAbove" Saul has taken a seat at Table 43. Once Saul saw that he was at the same table as online pros Jeff "yellowsub" Williams, Carl "colson10" Olson, Mike "Gags30" Gagliano, and Jerry "sandler1860" Payne, he was clearly astonished.

"Gavin, have you seen my table?" he asked Gavin Griffin from across the room, "Look at my table!"

Kopp Out

This hand was recounted to us from the winner of the pot and the deliverer of Billy Kopp's fate, George "Riley" Panagakis.

All the money went in after a flop of {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-}.

Kopp showed {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a straight flush draw and was up against Panagakis' {q-Clubs}{q-}.

The turn and river bricked for Kopp and he was sent to the rail.
