Sexton Takes One

Abe Mosseri raised and Mike Sexton reraised. Mosseri called. The flop came down {A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and Mosseri check-raised a bet from Sexton. The turn card was the {J-Spades} and Mosseri bet. Sexton called. The river card was the {Q-Hearts} and both players checked.

Sexton tabled the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a set of aces and won the pot to move up to 76,000 in chips. Mosseri dropped back to 36,000.

Kessler Quartered

Chad Brown and Allen Kessler
Chad Brown and Allen Kessler

There was heavy aciton pre-flop in a three-way hand among Chad Brown, Allen Kessler and Melissa Burr. Brown raised, Kessler re-raised and Burr four-bet from the button. Brown and Kessler both called.

The flop came {2-Clubs} {6-Spades} {a-Clubs}. Brown checked to Kessler. He bet and was called by Burr.

"An ace isn't supposed to hit that flop," said Brown as he folded, referring perhaps to the pre-flop action.

Kessler checked the turn {4-Diamonds} to Burr, then called her bet. Both players checked the river. Kessler showed {a-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {k-Spades} {k-Hearts} for two pair, aces and deuces, with no low. Burr showed {a-Spades} {2-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} for the same two pair and a weak low. It was good enough to give her three-quarters of the pot.

Buss Eliminated

Jerry Buss raised in early position before the button called. The big blind also called and the three of them watched the flop roll out {A-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. The big blind and Buss checked. The button then bet, the big blind called and then Buss called.

On the {3-Spades} turn, the big blind bet out first, Buss raised all in for 3,600 total and the button folded. The big blind called.

The big blind tabled the {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades} for a wheel and Buss held the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Buss was sent to the rail and will be able to watch the Lakers take on the Celtics later tonight.

Mizzi Ramping Up

Sorel Mizzi is, in the parlance of the industry, "on a heater" lately. He made a final table yesterday and today is up to 84,000 after a strong hand against one opponent. Mizzi bet and three-bet a flop of {q-Hearts} {2-Spades} {5-Clubs} after being check-raised. His opponent called the three-bet, then check-called a bet on the {10-Diamonds} turn and check-called another bet on the {10-Clubs} river. Mizzi turned up {a-Spades} {k-Spades} {k-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}, two pair, kings and tens.

Evdakov to the Rail

Yesterday Carlos Mortensen was all in before the dinner break, one of the first players at risk of elimination in the whole tournament. Today he's alive and kicing with about 40,000 chips after eliminating Nikolay Evdakov. Evdakov was all in on the turn of a {9-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} board with unimproved queens, {a-Diamonds} {q-Spades} {q-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. Mortensen called with two pair, {a-Spades} {k-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {4-Hearts}. The {5-Hearts} on the river didn't improve Evdakov's high hand, and with no low hand he lost both halves of the pot. He's out.

Hellmuth Not the Butt of the Joke?

Rules nit
Rules nit

Usually Phil Hellmuth is the man with the target on his back. Most jokes made at Hellmuth's table are made at his expense. To be fair, Hellmuth is usually good-natured about those jokes but he has definitely been the recipient of more than his fair share.

But Hellmuth was the one doing the needling a short time ago when Allen Kessler popped up to complain to the floor that the feature table -- pulled out of the center of the floor and put in a special feature table area -- had not been broken in order. That was where Hellmuth started razzing Kessler for being a rules nit.

"Does Allen talk to you every single day?" Hellmuth asked the floor.

"Yes," replied the floor. The whole table burst into laughter. For his part, Kessler took it just as good-naturedly as Hellmuth often does.

Lederer, Lawson Busto

George "Tiny" Danzer started the day seventh in chips. He has even more chips now after eliminating Howard Lederer. Lederer's {a-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} was no match for Danzer's {a-} {2-} {8-} {q-} on a board of {a-Spades} {j-Diamonds} {j-Hearts} {j-Clubs} {3-Hearts}. Each player had three jacks, but Danzer's ace-queen was superior to Lederer's ace-six.

On a different table, Michael Jarmark hit a fortuitous river to claim both halves of the pot and knock out Ted Lawson. Lawson was all in on a flop of {8-Diamonds} {k-Spades} {7-Diamonds}, tabling a pair of eights and a low draw, {a-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {5-Spades}. Jarmark showed down a better low but not much of a high draw, {a-Hearts} {q-Spades} {5-Hearts} {2-Clubs}. The turn {3-Diamonds} made Jarmark's low; the river {q-Diamonds} give him a pair of a queens and the best hand for high. Jarmark's up to 105,000 while Lawson is out.

Alex Not So Great with Only a Quarter

We picked up a three-way pot contested among Alex Kostritsyn, Eli Elezra and Erik Seidel as they came to the turn, {2-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {7-Spades} {6-Hearts}. Kostritsyn bet, with both other players calling.

The river came another low card, {4-Spades}. Kostritsyn bet again. This time only Elezra called. He showed down {a-Spades} {4-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}, a set of sixes and a live ace for low. Kostritsyn had {a-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} {8-Clubs}, two pair for high and the same live ace for low. He wound up with one-quarter, while Elezra got three-quarters of the pot. Each man has roughly 75,000 chips now.
