Not long after losing a chunk of his stack in that flush=over-flush encounter with Frank Baris, Layne Flack found himself in another cooler situation and this time it would be for his tournament life.
According to Flack's assassin, the appropriately-monikered Dan Killoran, Flack had been holding against Killoran's own when the two of them saw an flop. Killoran bet out, Flack raised, and Killoran flatted.
The turn was another giving Flack trips and Killoran a full house. Killoran checked it, Flack went all in, and that was all she wrote for Mr. Flack.
There was a mid-position limp before Jason Mercier, reduced to 1,025, shoved in the hijack. Both the gent in the cutoff and the mid-position limper called.
Both non-all-in players checked the flop, and the limper check/folded to a 1,000 bet from the cutoff on the turn. Mercier and the gent in the cutoff flipped their cards.
Mr. Cutoff: for two pair
Mercier: drawing pretty thin with
River: a no-cigar
With that, we are down one Mr. Mercier.
Men Nguyen raised to 550 from early position and drew two callers -- one on the button, the other in the small blind.
The flop came . The small blind checked, and Nguyen continued for 1,400. The player on the button hesitated, then pushed all in for approximately 5,000. The SB got out, Men looked the situation over for a moment, and made the call.
Nguyen showed for top pair-top kicker -- his c-bet wasn't for nothing. Meanwhile his opponent held a meager . The turn was the and the river the , Nguyen won, and his opponent shuffled away.
Nguyen is stacking up approximately 10,500 now.
We caught up with Layne Flack on the turn of a board with 2,000 in the pot. Unbeknownst to him, he was about to take a serious hit.
Flack (big blind) bet out 800 and Frank Baris (early position) called. They proceeded to the river, which was the . Flack now bet out 2,000, and Baris responded by going all in for 7,000 more. Flack snap-called, and was most likely both surprised and upset to see Baris' hand.
Flack: for a flush
Baris: for a bigger flush
Baris enjoyed a full double up and is now sitting pretty on 19,000. Flack meanwhile took a dive to 8,000.
With this being the very cheapest event of the Series to enter, the pro-to-unknown-player ratio is rather lower than in some of the other events. So imagine how delightful it is to the casual blogging eye to find two well-known faces sharing a table.
Right now our favored lurking spot in the Pavilion is right next to the table where both Isaac Baron (12,500) and Layne Flack (13,000) are seated. We haven't witnessed any fireworks yet (the most action we've seen there so far has been Flack enthusiastically telling a tournament director how the last time he had highlights done his hair turned orange) but we'll be keeping a close eye on these two titans.
There was 2,500 in the middle, and four community cards -- . Layne Flack checked, and his opponent on the button checked behind as well.
The river brought the . Flack very quickly fired a bet of 1,500, and his opponent made the call. Flack showed for the flush, and his opponent mucked.
"That's my favorite hand," grinned Flack as he gathered his winnings. He's up to 17,000 now.
It looked as though Sorel Mizzi opened for 1,100 in late position, but either way, the player in the cutoff moved all in for 7,800 and Mizzi called all in for his last 2,750. He was dominated, and following an unmiraculous board, Mizzi's tournament life came to an abrupt end.
Mizzi:

A short-stacked Jeff Shulman opened by shoving all in from late position for his last 2,250. Jason Mercier called from the cutoff, then the player in the big blind pushed all in over the top for approximately 12,000. Mercier made the call, thereby committing his entire stack of 5,800.

The board brought all babies -- -- meaning Shulman was eliminated, and Mercier and the remaining opponent chopped the pot with their two pair-ace kicker hands. Mercier winds up at about 7,000 after that one.
