Batista Bomb of a Bluff

Apparently now over the urge to massively over-shove the pot, we witnessed Chad Batista instead pull off a daring bluff.

The flop read {8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} when we caught up with him facing a 500 bet from the player in the small blind. Batista called, and they saw a turn.

The turn came down the {9-Spades} and the small blind bet out 500 again. This time, however, Batista went all in, eliciting a tank and then an eventual, rather angry, fold.

Batista showed his opponent {q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, which probably didn't make him feel any better.

Money Talk

Just had a quick chat with the Tournament Director. The top 441 finishers will be making the cash in Event No. 3. There were 276 survivors from Day 1a, meaning they aren't wanting the Day 1b field to shrink below 165 before the end of play today.

The TD surmises it to be unlikely we'll be down that far by the end of Level 10, given the present pace of things.

At the moment -- about 10 minutes until the end of Level 5 -- there are 770 players still with chips here in the Pavilion.

Seif & Sound

Mark Seif raised to 500 from late position and the gent in the cutoff called; the player on the button ever-so-slightly raised all in for 525 total and both Seif and the cutoff naturally called, as did the gentleman in the big blind.

So the four players, one all in, went to the {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop. The big blind checked to Seif who bet, and once both the cutoff and big blind had folded, Seif and the preflop all in gentleman went to showdown.

Mr. All In: {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Seif: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Seif's hand held through the {q-Spades} turn and {3-Diamonds} river, and the short-stacked player was eliminated. Seif's stack meanwhile was bumped up to 14,000.

Going Down

Missing in action - Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott.

In serious trouble - Tony Dunst. After amassing an impressive early stack, Dunst has now been reduced to just 2,000 chips or 10 big blinds. As we strolled by his table he was staring at the felt as though he could see right into the void.

Big Raise from "Lilholdem"

Everyone has their own shoving line - the point at which your options are all in or fold. For some it is 10 big blinds, for others it's a little more or perhaps a little less.

Not for Chad "lilholdem954" Batista!

Currently sitting on around 6,000 - or 30 big blinds - Batista was spotted doing a most unlikely thing and open-shoving. Naturally everyone folded and he picked up the blinds. Maybe he's got a date later or something.

Basebaldy Busts One

Eric Baldwin
Eric Baldwin

There was 1,000 in the middle and three players still with cards -- one in the big blind, one UTG, and Eric "Basebaldy" Baldwin in middle position. The flop had come {5-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}, the BB checked, and there was a pause while the table waited for the next player to act.

Finally he pushed out a bet of 650. Baldwin studied for a moment, then raised to 1,300. The BB folded, and Baldwin's opponent announced he was all in. Baldwin immediately called, flipping over {5-Clubs} {5-Spades} for a set of fives. His opponent turned over {J-Spades} {J-Hearts}.

The turn was the {7-Hearts} and the river the {8-Clubs}, and Baldwin was best. After a counting out of chips it was determined Baldwin had his opponent covered, and so while Basebaldy gathered up the chips, his opponent gathered his belongings and headed toward the exit.

Baldwin is pushing up close to 13,000 now.

Eavesdropping In

Overheard at the tables:

"...So the dealer says, hey, where are you going with that pig? And the guy says, it's a duck. And the dealer says, no, I'm talking to the pig. I mean duck."

It's all in the delivery.

Kings Serve Mizzi

Sorel Mizzi opened with a raise to 450 from late position, and the player on the button reraised all in for 1,200 total. Mizzi quickly called, showing {K-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} while his opponent tabled {A-Spades} {10-Hearts}.

The community cards came {9-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {7-Diamonds}, and another player has hit the rail. Mizzi now has 5,800.
