On Thursday, the third and final day of Event #47: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better played out as the final ten players of a 978-player field battled it out for the $267,345 first-place prize and 47th gold bracelet of the 2012 World Series of Poker. After eight hours of play, the man who walked away with the top prize and the gold was Steven Loube, a 34-year-old personal injury attorney from Atlanta, Georgia, who was playing in his first-ever WSOP event.

The day start off quick when the short-stacked Viatcheslav Ortynskiy, who was crippled in the last hand of Day 2, got all in with {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts} but failed to overcome the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} of Sonu Sharma as the board ran out {3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. The Russian finished in tenth place and earned $15,078 for his performance.

Not long after, Paul Ewen was dispatched by Tim Finne in ninth place, while Kyle Carlston, who finished fourth in this event back in 2009, followed him out the door in eighth place.

The next elimination came when Loube raised to 55,000 under the gun and cleared the field all the way around to Paul Taylor in the big blind. The latter moved all in for around 125,000 and Loube snap-called.

Showdown
Loube: {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Taylor: {A-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

The {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs} wasn't particularly interesting, while the {K-Clubs} turn saw Loube pump his fist and say, "It's over." Indeed, Taylor was drawing dead going to the river, which came the meaningless {10-Diamonds}. Taylor silently made his way to the payout desk to collect $31,634 for his seventh-place finish.

A little while later, Sharma limped from under the gun plus one only to have Loube raise pot to 106,000 from the button. Finne was in the small blind and inquired with the floor as to whether or not the action would be reopened to Loube if Sharma, who started the hand with 139,000, were to move all in. The answer was no, and Finne made the call. Sharma moved in as expected, and Loube made the call.

When the flop fell {J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades}, Finne ended up check-folding to a pot-sized bet, leaving Sharma and Loube to turn up their cards.

Showdown
Loube: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}{2-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Sharma: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Loube flopped top two pair but Sharma held a big wrap. Unfortunately for the latter, the {3-Diamonds} turn and {8-Clubs} river would both be dry and he would exit in sixth place for $41,589.

Charalampos Lappas, the start-of-the-day chip leader, was the next to go in fifth place. Lappas never got much going and was eliminated shortly after a river bluff failed.

It took more than three and a half hours for the next elimination to occur, which meant four-handed play was a grueling affair. Eventually Roch Cousineau raised to 100,000 under the gun and received a call from Cameron Mckinley in the big blind. The latter checked the {A-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop, but then woke up with a check-raise to 250,000 when his opponent bet 100,000. Cousineau made the call and then watched Mckinley move all in for around 620,000 on the {7-Hearts} turn. Cousineau, who had 570,000, shrugged and put his chips in the pot.

Showdown
Cousineau: {2-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Hearts}
Mckinley: {A-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

"Big card and I scoop," Cousineau said as he held the nut low and two pair. Much to the delight of his supporters, that's exactly what he got when the {K-Clubs} peeled off on the river. Mckinley got up to leave after the hand, but after the stacks were counted down, it was discovered he was left with 50,000. Not surprisingly, Mckinley was eliminated in the very next hand, finishing fourth place and bringing about the dinner break.

After returning from the dinner break, action was fast. Each of the three players took turns doubling, before Cousineau was dealt a crippling blow from Loube. On the very next hand, Cousineau would be eliminated in third place for $103,538.

Heads-up play saw Loube begin with a 3-1 chip lead over Finne, and it only took a couple of hands for Loube to seal the deal, which he did by hitting a lucky heart on the river. Not too shabby for a true amateur whole told us shortly before his big win: “Like I told you guys before, my biggest cash before this was a $50 [gift certificate], good for food, but not for liquor.”

Timothy Finne Eliminated in 2nd Place ($165,486)

Timothy Finne - 2nd place
Timothy Finne - 2nd place

Steven Loube began heads-up play with about a 3-to-1 chip advantage, and after a couple of small-pot hands, enjoyed about the same lead when Timothy Finne limped in from the button. Loube quickly raised the pot to 180,000, and Finne called.

The flop came {3-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Loube sat quietly for just a moment, then bet 360,000.

It was Finne's turn to sit in contemplation for several seconds before announcing he was reraising all in. Loube called right away.

Finne: {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{6-Hearts}
Loube: {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

Finne had a pair of kings and an open-ended straight draw, while Loube had a nut flush draw with backdoor low possibilities. "Heart!" yelled Loube's supporters, but the turn brought the {Q-Clubs} to give Finne two pair and take away any low.

The dealer then burned a card and turned over the river... the {9-Hearts}! "Yes!" shouted Loube at the sight of the card, who after exchanging hugs with his rail shook Finne's hand.

Finne finishes second, better than the three third-places he's earned at the WSOP before. A nice run, but one spot shy of the goal. Meanwhile, Steven Loube is 1-for-1... this is his very first WSOP tournament ever!

In the very next hand after being crippled, Roch Cousineau moved all in for his last 60,000 on the button and was called by Steven Loube in the small blind. Tim Finne checked his option in the big, and then both players checked it down as the board ran out {9-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

Cousineau rolled over {Q-}{Q-}{x-}{x-}, but it was no good against the {J-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades} of Loube. With that, Cousineau made his exit in third place, good for $103,538.

With Cameron Mckinley down to his last 45,000 and in the small blind, both Steven Loube and Timothy Finne limped in, Mckinley was all in, and Roch Cousineau checked from the big blind. All three of the remaining players checked down the {9-Spades}{2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop, {7-Hearts} turn, and {10-Diamonds} river.

The tabling of cards commenced, and when Mckinley spied how the {J-}{8-}{6-}{2-} of Steven Loube had given him a straight, Mckinley mucked his cards, the crowd cheered his fourth-place run, and the three remaining players left for the dinner break

Charalampos Lappas Eliminated in 5th Place ($41,589)

Charalampos Lappas - 5th place
Charalampos Lappas - 5th place

After losing that big chunk to Roch Cousineau following a failed river bluff, it took two more hands to spell the end of Charalampos Lappas's run in Event 47.

In the first, Lappas raised to 75,000 from the cutoff and got a caller in Cam Mckinley. The flop came {6-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and Lappas bet 125,000, and Mckinley quickly called. The turn then brought the {J-Hearts}, pairing the board. Lappas checked, and Mckinley wasted no time pushing his stack of about 370,000 forward. Lappas folded, and Mckinley showed the {J-Spades} as he corralled the chips.

That one pushed Lappas down around 175,000. Soon Timothy Finne was open-raising to 72,000 from the small blind, Lappas reraised all in, and Finne called.

Finne: {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Lappas: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{2-Clubs}

The {10-Spades}{5-Spades}{J-Clubs} flop gave Finne two pair, then the {5-Clubs} on the turn filled him up, leaving Lappas searching for a king on the river to save him. But the final community card was the {6-Spades}, and Lappas is out in fifth.

Big Call Pushes Rocky in Front

Roch Cousineau
Roch Cousineau

Charalampos Lappas opened for 50,000 from middle position. Sonu Sharma was contemplating what to do on the button when Roch "Rocky" Cousineau started to push calling chips forward from the small blind, not realizing Sharma had yet to act. Finally Sharma folded, Cousineau called, the flop came {7-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}, and both checked.

The turn brought the {J-Diamonds} and a bet of 66,000 from Cousineau. Lappas thought a beat, then pushed out a raise to 160,000. Cousineau called.

The river was the {4-Hearts}. Cousineau was thinking about what to do, and Lappas spoke up, thinking perhaps Cousineau had checked dark (he hadn't). Finally the Cousineau did check, and after about a half-minute Lappas bet 225,000.

Cousineau went deep into the tank, finally emerging to make the call. "I have a queen," he said as he did, turning over {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} for queens and jacks. Lappas instantly mucked.

With that one Cousineau pushes up over 1.3 million and into the chip lead.

Kyle Carlston Eliminated in 8th Place ($24,386)

Kyle Carlston - 8th place
Kyle Carlston - 8th place

A short-stacked Kyle Carlston opened for 50,000 from early position and Steven Loube called from the hijack seat. Timothy Finne leaned forward to see how much Carlston had left behind — 163,000 exactly — and called as well from the cutoff. It folded to Sonu Sharma in the big blind who also called, and the four players saw the flop come {6-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Sharma checked, and Carlston promptly pushed his remaining stack forward. After a brief pause, Loube announced the call, and the action was on Finne. This time Finne was leaning forward to see how much Loube had left — about 580,000 — then leaned back again before saying he was reraising all in.

Finne's reraise was for 582,000 total. Sharma quickly stepped aside, and a somewhat exasperated Loube thought for about a half-minute before folding his {A-}{10-}{9-}{2-} face up (top two pair).

The remaining players tabled their cards.

Carlston: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts} — straight wrap draw, flush draw
Finne: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Spades} — pair of nines, nut flush draw

The turn was the {2-Clubs} and river the {3-Spades}, meaning no one made a low and Finne's pair of nines took the high. Loube's exasperation continued, but he patted Finne on the back for his move and for taking the pot and the chip lead.

All likewise congratulated Carlston on his finish here at his second career WSOP final table.

Paul Ewen - 9th place

Action folded to Tim Finne in the cutoff and he raised to 32,000. Paul Ewen was on the button and capped his cards before announcing, "Pot," making it 120,000 to go. Both the blinds got out of the way and Finne announced a four-bet, which prompted Ewen to call off his remaining 70,000.

Showdown
Ewen: {A-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Finne: {A-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

The {A-Spades}{3-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop was kind to Finne as it gave him two pair and the nut low. Ewen knew he was in trouble and needed help, but he would find none as the board ran out {Q-Diamonds} and {9-Hearts} on the turn and river respectively. With that, Ewen shook hands with the table and exited in ninth place.
