Ashkan Razavi - Champion

Five days ago a uniquely structured event began that allowed tournament runners who busted on the first day a second chance. When all was said and done, the event turned up an astounding 3,404 entrants. After five days of play, Ashkan Razavi was the lone man standing, earning him $781,398 in prize money and a shiny gold World Series of Poker bracelet.

Day 1a of this event turned out a total of 1,696 players while the second flight saw 1,708 players return to the felt. With a field this size, the number of notable casualties were through the roof. Just a small sample size of the names who played in either flight of the Day 1's and were not able to return for Day 2 play include: Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Steve O'Dwyer, Gavin Smith, Andre Akkari, Vanessa Selbst, Chino Rheem, Dennis Phillips, Carlos Mortensen, and many, many more.

After two long flights, the final 514 players advanced to Day 2, where only the top 342 would cash. Among those to make it through the grueling field and cash in this event are Sam Barnhart, Mickey Petersen, Angel Guillen, Jason Mercier, Jason Koon, Mike Mautsow, and PokerNews' own Kristy Arnett.

Even with a field this large, the cream would still rise to the top. Many notable names were able to push through and make Day 3, including Scott Seiver, Paul Wasicka, Daniel Idema and 2010 WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel. Unfortunately, Day 3 was as far as those players were able to make it. By the end of the third day of play a final table was set and there was a chance for history to be made.

The story on everyone's lips was that of Amanda Musumeci, who came into the day as the last woman remaining in the field. Musumeci had the opportunity to become the first woman to win an open event since Vanessa Selbst won Event 19 - $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha in 2008.

Also at the final table was the winner of Event #55: $50,000 Poker Player's Championship at the 2011 WSOP, Brian Rast.

The final table kicked off to a lightning pace when Dien Le was crippled by calling the all in of Derrick Huang. Le's pocket eights were unable to best Huang's king-queen and he hit the rail soon after.

Immediately after, Benjamin Reinhart got in a raising war with Amanda Musumeci that led to Reinhart five-betting all in with {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. Unfortunately for Reinhart, he was behind the {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} of Musumeci and failed to improve. With this bust, Musumeci was able to accumulate enough chips to vault her into the chip lead.

The next hand saw another casualty when Greg "FBT" Mueller moved all in from the cutoff holding {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} only to find that Derrick Huang was holding pocket kings. Mueller found hope on the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} flop, giving him backdoor diamond outs and a jack to make Broadway. The turn and the river bricked out, however, and Mueller was sent home in seventh place.

Brian Rast was never able to gain any momentum at the final table, and he was the next to go when he moved in holding {a-Hearts}{8-Spades} but was crushed by Ashkan Razavi's {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. Rast's weren't the only chips that Razavi would collect, however, as a bit later Duy Ho moved all in for roughly 3,700,000 holding pocket threes against Razavi's pocket kings. The kings held and Razavi had a choke-hold on the competition.

Ryan Olisar was the chip leader coming into the day, but ended up as the fourth place finisher. Both he and Musumeci got it all in when they were almost even in chips. Olisar held {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and was racing with Musumeci's {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Musumeci struck gold on a {5-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs} board and sealed the deal when the {2-Clubs} came on fourth street, giving her a full house. Olisar was left to be forced all in while in the big blind during the next hand and was finished off immediately.

The final casualty before heads up play came when Ashkan Razavi opened the betting to 200,000 and Derrick Huang announced an all in from the small blind. Razavi instantly called with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} and was crushing Huang's {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. The kings were able to hold and just like that we were heads up.

Razavi had a huge chip advantage going into play, but that did not deter Musumeci from continuing to fight until her last breath. Musumeci managed to double up once when she won a race in dramatic fashion.

Shorty thereafter, Musumeci found herself all in once again. Razavi opened to 200,000 and Musumeci moved all in from the big blind. Razavi called and the hands were exposed:

Razavi: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Musumeci: {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

A {7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop was spread in front of the two players and Musumeci was in need of some help. The {4-Diamonds} came on the turn and Razavi was once card away from a championship and dashing the hopes of those who wanted Musumeci to be the next female WSOP champion. The dealer rapped the table and flipped over the river:

The {K-Clubs}.

Just like that Amanda Musumeci became the second place finisher, pocketing $481,643 for her efforts, which is her largest lifetime cash to date.

PokerNews would like to extend its congratulations to the newest WSOP champion, Ashkan Razavi. This concludes our coverage of Event 9: $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Re-Entry. In case you missed it, check out the coverage of the Event 11: $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha that also crowned a champion today.

Amanda Musumeci Eliminated in 2nd Place ($481,643)

Amanda Musumeci - 2nd Place

The final hand of Event 9: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Re-Entry at the 2012 World Series of Poker has been dealt and it went a little something like this.

Ashkan Razavi opened to 200,000 from the button and Amanda Musumeci decided now was the time to shove her short-stack all in. Razavi thought for just a few moments before making the call, prompting both players to turn their hands over.

Razavi: {k-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Musumeci: {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

The players were on their feet, the rail was in their feet, the excitement was building. The dealer turned over a {7-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop. Razavi hit his ten and Musumeci would need some help. The {4-Diamonds} on the turn was no good and it was looking like it was about to be all over.

River: {k-Spades}

Another pair for Razavi and that was it for Musumeci. For her 2nd place effort, Musumeci received a bittersweet $481,643. And with that, Ashkan Razavi wins his first WSOP gold bracelet.

Derrick Huang Eliminated in 3rd Place ($347,228)

Derrick Huang - 3rd Place
Derrick Huang - 3rd Place

The play slowed down for several orbits, but that has all changed with the elimination of Derrick Huang in 3rd place. His last hand began when Ashkan Razavi opened the pot to 200,000 from the button. Huang was in the small blind and moved all in. Razavi instantly called and turned over {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}.

Razavi's cards hitting the felt was enough to see Huang let out a sigh and give his head a slight shake as he turned over {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Razavi's rail got on their feet and so did the two players in the hand as the dealer dealt out a {4-Spades}{3-Spades}{q-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} board.

With that, Huang goes home in 3rd place for a $347,228 score, while we are down to heads-up play here in Event 9 of the World Series of Poker.

Ryan Olisar Eliminated in 4th Place ($252,379)

Ryan Olisar - 4th Place
Ryan Olisar - 4th Place

Ryan Olisar's tournament life has just come to an end over the course of two hands. The first hand saw Olisar open to 160,000 from under the gun, at which point Amanada Musumeci moved all in from the button. The blinds out of the way and Olisar made a quick call.

Olisar turned over {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} and Musumeci tabled {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. It was off to the races, with Musumeci the one at risk. Well, she was at risk until {5-Spades}{2-Spades}{8-Hearts}{2-Clubs} had been dealt on the board and then Olisar was drawing dead and the meaningless river would change nothing.

Olisar was left with only 60,000 at this point and after the 10,000-chip ante, would be all in from the big blind the very next hand. All three players limped during this hand and then checked it down as the {j-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{2-Spades} board was dealt out.

Olisar watched as Derrick Huang turned over {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, Musumeci tabled {6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} and Ashkan Razavi held {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, the best hand - a pair of fives. Now it was Olisar's turn to show his cards.

Olisar slowly looked at his cards and turned over the {3-Spades} first. "I have a flush draw," he said before slowly peeling back his second card like it was baccarat. Unfortunately it was the {8-Clubs} and it was all over in 4th place for Olisar.

Triple Ship = Triple Up

Derrick Huang Gets the Triple
Derrick Huang Gets the Triple

Derrick Huang was the table short stack and started the action by moving all in for 825,000. Ryan Olisar peeked at his cards and announced that he was all in over the top. This brought the action to Amanda Musumeci who looked at her cards, then at her opponents, then back at her cards once again.

"I'm all in," said Musumeci, drawing several gasps from the rail.

The three hands were revealed to the table, only to find that Olisar and Musumeci had the same hand:

Olisar: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Musumeci: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Huang: {Q-Clubs}{8-Spades}

With Olisar and Musumeci sharing outs, Huang was hopeful for a triple up this hand. The poker gods must have heard Huang's request, as the flop fell {Q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, pairing Huang's queen. The {J-Spades} gave Olisar and Musumeci outs to make a straight, but the {6-Hearts} that rivered did not help them. Huang was able to drag in a key triple up while giving hits to two of his three remaining opponents.

Duy Ho Eliminated in 5th Place ($185,378)

Duy Ho - 5th Place
Duy Ho - 5th Place

We've seen Duy Ho raise to some rather large amounts before the flop during this event and this hand proved to be no different. Ho opened to 300,000 and it folded to Ashkan Razavi who three-bet to 740,000 from the small blind. Ho replied by shipping all in for 3,700,000 and Razavi snap called, tabling {K-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} which was far ahead of Ho's {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}.

The flop fell {5-Spades}{A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Razavi retained his lead with his pocket kings. Fourth street brought the {7-Spades} and Ho was in need of one of the two remaining treys in order to stay alive in this tournament. The {6-Diamonds} river did not oblige Ho and he was sent to the rail in fifth place.

Brian Rast Eliminated in 6th Place ($137,632)

Brian Rast - 6th place
Brian Rast - 6th place

It was the last hand before the first 20-minute break of the day that would see Brian Rast eliminated in a gallant 6th place.

The hand in question saw cards fly into the muck from all directions before it was on Ashkan Razavi on the button. Razavi would raise it up to 100,000 and it was on Rast in the small blind. He shoved for his short stack and Razavi immediately made the call.

Razavi: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Rast: {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}

The crowd went wild, especially Razavi's rail as they cried out for a king. The {q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop didn't house a king, but it was a good one for Razavi. The {3-Clubs} turn wasn't what Rast was looking for and the {7-Hearts} on the river would be the final bullet in Rast's tournament life.

With that hand, the remaining five players have been sent on a 20-minute break. We will have full chip counts for you shortly. The chip lead is going to be close between Razavi and Musumeci.

The Lady Leads

Amanda Musumeci On Top
Amanda Musumeci On Top

We have a new chip leader thanks to Amanda Musumeci recently taking a pot from Ryan Olisar. The hand in question was opened by Olisar to 80,000. Musumeci then three-bet to 210,000 on the button and Olisar made the call as some cards were dealt on the felt.

Flop: {8-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}

On the flop, Olisar check-called a bet of 180,000 form Musumeci and a {k-Clubs} would hit the turn. This time both players would check and the {4-Diamonds} would complete the board on the river.

This time when Olisar checked, Musumeci readied a big bet. She had over 500,000 ready to bet and started placing stacks of 100,000 out onto the felt. The tournament director classified the way she bet as a string bet and Musumeci was forced to bet 105,000 - the amount which the first small stack she put onto the felt was.

Olisar immediately called the small bet and then mucked his hand as Musumeci turned over {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. Musumeci then asked Olisar if he would have called a bigger bet. He didn't tell her the answer.

Greg Mueller Eliminated in 7th Place ($103,258)

Action folded around to Greg "FBT" Mueller who moved all in for about 600,000. Derrick Huang peered down at his cards and called from the small blind. Ryan Olisar mucked from the big blind and Huang triumphantly tabled {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} which was crushing the {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} of Greg Mueller.

Mueller found a glimmer of hope on the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} flop, giving him backdoor diamond outs and a jack to make Broadway. The turn brought the {2-Spades}, thus leaving Mueller looking for a jack on the river. Unfortunately for Mueller, the {6-Clubs} drilled the river and he became the latest casualty of this final table.

Amanda Musumeci opened to 85,000 from middle position and on her immediate left, Benjmain Reinhart three-bet to 215,000. Action folded back to Amanda who grabbed a large stack of T25,000 chips and moved them to the middle, making it 405,000 to go. Reinhart replied by five-betting all in and Musumeci snap called.

Reinhart: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Musumeci: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{9-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Musumeci's aces were able to hold, sending Reinhart to the rail and vaulting her into the chip lead.
