Event #57 of the 2013 World Series of Poker, the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament, attracted 784 players to the Brasilia Room and at the end of 10 60-minute levels only 252 of those who started had chips to bag and tag. The title of overnight chip leader goes to Mark Darner who turned his 15,000 starting stack into an impressive 222,700.

Darner flew under the radar for the majority of Day 1, but he will be firmly in our sights on Wednesday’s Day 2. Darner, a Florida native, is looking for his second cash of the series, having finished 16th in Event #9 ($3,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout). Should Darner reach the money in this event — 81 places are paid – it would be Darner’s third cash at the WSOP in his career.

As you would expect from a tournament costing $5,000 to buy into, Event #57 saw some of the biggest names in poker take part. Timothy Reilly (154,200), Philipp Gruissem (143,800), Matt Perrins (142,500), Sam Trickett (116,000) and Antonio Esfandiari (97,000) each had good days at the felt and enter Day 2 with sizable stacks.

Some of the notables who did not fare as well and busted during proceedings included Christopher Brammer, Chris Moorman, Jonathan Aguiar, Elio Fox, David “Bakes” Baker, Sorel Mizzi, Marvin Rettenmaier, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and the legendary Phil Ivey.

Day 2 commences at 1p.m Las Vegas time sharp, and continues until 10 60-minute levels have been played. Join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team from 1 p.m on Wednesday as Event #57 plays through the money bubble and towards the final table.

Mason Catches a Lucky River

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

There was a raise to 1,600 from under the gun, a raise that Ashley mason three-bet all in for 11,325 in total. A couple of players folded before the hijack four-bet all in for around 40,000 and the initial raiser called!

Mason: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
UTG: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Hijack: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Our under the gun player took the lead on the {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{k-Clubs} flop and both the hijack and Mason started to stand from their seats. Mason had to it back down again though, because the {5-Clubs} turn was followed by the {7-Hearts} river, improving the young Brit to a straight and boosting his stack to almost 29,000.

Cloutier Clattered

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Poker veteran T.J. Cloutier has been eliminated from this $5,000 event. There was a raise on the button and Cloutier defended his big blind with an all-in bet of 17,000. The original raiser called to put Cloutier at risk.

"I only know I have an ace," said Cloutier, "I've not even looked at the over one."

Cloutier: {A-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Button: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}

"Oh, you're ahead," said Cloutier as the cards were revealed. Neither player improved on the {2-Spades}{6-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} board, the button won the hand with his ten-kicker, sending Cloutier to the rail empty handed.
