One Down! First Player Eliminated in the 2013 WSOP Main Event

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

"Seat open on 407!" bellowed the table 407 dealer.

Our PokerNews reporter rushed over to the table to see if he could get any details, and on spotting the three-seat sitting with over 50,000 in chips he asked him for the details. Unfortunately that player couldn't speak English so two players on the table helped give us the rundown on the hand.

Mark Jeffreys opened and then another player three-bet before Angel Funes Rios flatted next to act. Jeffreys pushed out a four-bet totalling 2,000 to force the initial three-bettor out as Rios came along.

The flop fell {5-}{5-}{6-} and Jeffreys checked before Rios continued with a bet only to have Jeffreys check-raise. Rios called and when the turn landed the {10-}, Jeffreys tapped the table again with Rios firing out another bet. Jeffreys responded with yet another check-raise and Rios called as the river blanked out.

Jeffreys checked for a third time before Rios bet out only to have Jeffreys now check-raise all-in. Rios called and tabled his {A-}{A-} which was enough to take the pot once Jeffreys tabled his {Q-}{Q-}.

Following the triple check-raise with his pocket queens, Jeffreys is the first casualty here on Day 1a.

Update on the Champions

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

We decided to grab an update on the three recent Main Event Champions that are playing today and it appears as though Pius Heinz is having a tough time at his table that is currently playing six-handed as there are four dead stacks in play.

With Heinz having lost roughly a third of his stack, it is 2009 Champion Joe Cada doing better on the feature table as he has chipped up his stack by 34 big blinds.

Greg Merson is sitting just below starting stack while he bops away to whatever is being channelled into his headphones.

"Check to You, Bully"

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Jason Alexander led out for a bet on a flop of {6-Spades}{8-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, a player raised, and Alexander called. The turn was the {9-Spades}, and Alexander checked.

"Check to you, bully," he told the player, smiling.

The player fired out 3,000, and Alexander called. The river was the {7-Diamonds}, Alexander checked again, and then folded when his opponent fired out 7,500.

Brikis Rebuilding

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Josh Brikis looks to have lost a bit of his starting stack, but is already starting to build it back up. In a recent hand, after he and his opponent both checked the {5-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{a-Hearts} flop, Brikis led out for 400 on the turn, and his opponent folded, muttering something about three overcards on the board. Brikis didn't respond, and stoically stacked his new chips.

Gagliano Runs into Straight

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

On a board of {3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades} we saw Michael Gagliano tossing in what appeared to be 11,000 only to be shown his opponent's {5-Hearts}{4-Clubs} for a wheel.

Gagliano looked visibly annoyed as he passed his cards to the muck as he was left with just 3,900.

"You have a set?" one of the players on his table asked.

Gagliano didn't respond and will be forced to do some work to push his chip stack upwards.

Justin Bonomo Forces the Fold

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

With the board reading {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Hearts} by the turn, Justin Bonomo saw his opponent check and seized on the sign of weakness.

Tossing a single orange T5000 tournament chip forward, Bonomo announced a bet of 3,700, and after a minute long dive into the tank his opponent released.

On the {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop, recent bracelet winner Mark Radoja led out for a bet of 350, and his opponent flatted to take the {6-Clubs} on the turn.

Both players tapped the table on fourth street, and the {6-Diamonds} completed the board on the river. Two checks later, and Radoja's hand was slid into the muck after his opponent tabled the {A-Spades}{q-Clubs} for ace-high.

Wilinofsky Bets River to Win

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Catching the action on the {Q-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{A-Spades} flop with 1,950 in the middle we found Ben Wilinofsky faced with a 800-chip bet from the player in the cutoff.

From out of the small blind Wilinofsky made the call as the {10-Hearts} completed the board on the river and he took his time before leading out with a 3,100-chip bet.

His opponent - who had roughly 21,000 in his stack - went into the tank for nearly three minutes before eventually folding to Wilinofsky, who with that pot, moves to just under 38,000 in chips.
