McShortstack

SPORTSMAN -- TV racing pundit John McCririck is probably more familiar to us Europeans, but once seen, probably remembered. Sporting his trademark mutton chop ginger whiskers, a blue floral sunhat, rings of bling and glasses on a gold chain, McCririck stands out from the crowd. His chips are guarded by a miniature big-head figurine of himself, something you don't see every day. But there are only 8,600 of them left, and the poker fan will need to turn things around if he's to make the dinner break. Having moved on from being teased for folding the nuts on TV (I kid you not), McCririck may have improved over the past year, but he has a tough table to get past, including Devilfish, Cristiano Blanco, Richard Collier and Dario Minieri - the latter played nearly every hand in the 15 minutes I was watching his table.

Table of Doooooom... Maybe?

From the floor of the Empire Casino...

I can't speak for the Fifty or Sportsman casinos, but here at the brand spanking new Empire Casino, the table of... drum roll please... certain death has to be Table 1:

Andy Bloch = 14,225
Chris Ferguson = 16,725
Jennifer Harman = 37,300
Paul Jackson = 17,625

Oh, and by the way, I still haven't found a chance to utilise my 'Jenny from the Bloch' pun. Bah, humbug! Those players are just downright selfish!

Sarah Taylor Back on Top

From the floor of the Empire Casino...

Sarah Taylor is up to 69,000 and jumped back into the chip lead on Day 1a. French actor/singer/poker player Patrick Bruel slipped to 26,000, while Barry Greenstein is around 32,000. Thor Hansen won a couple of pots and increased his stack to 26,000.

The Rise and Fall of Nikolaus Jedlicka

Nikolaus Jedlicka, playing in the £5,000 PLO event
THE FIFTY-- While cruising past Nikolaus Jedlicka's table, we witnessed him raising an opponent's 1,000 chip bet on the river to 3,500 on a board of {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{4-Spades}{K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}, and after much consideration, the young Betfair qualifier called, only to see Jedlicka's {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, that had rivered a set. That hand sent Jedlicka's stack up past the 40,000 mark.

Only a few moments later, we heard the dealer call out "all in action!" and rushed over to find that Jedlicka's stack had again found its way to the middle, calling an opponent's 6,000 or so chip all-in in a pot that had swelled to nearly 20,000. The board read {Q-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

"I think I have two outs here," said Jedlicka as he turned over {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}. He was right-- his opponent tabled {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}.

The river was the {J-Clubs}, and half of Jedlicka's stack was shipped across the table. He's currently sitting on 17,000.

Lean Mean Raising Machine

From the floor of the Empire Casino...

Every time I meander on over to Bruno Fitoussi's table, the Frenchman has chips in the middle and betting like there's no tomorrow. And would you Adam and Eve it, just moments ago I trundled across to find Bruno at it again, check-raising Andreas Frenger's 2k bet to 6k to take the pot on a {7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{K-Clubs} flop.

It seems to be working for him though as he's now become one of several to surpass the 30k mark with 30,900.

Who's That?

Check the Rock
Check the Rock
This is Heather Wells. Heather won a $540 satellite on Bodog, and is here playing while her husband sits home and minds their 5 month old baby. Just 10 weeks ago, the roles were reversed, and Heather was at home looking after the baby, while her husband Brian was playing in the Main Event after winning a seat on Bodog also.

Heather runs a 'bling' business that 'blings out' cell phones, glasses....whatever you got. Oh, and as for her own bling, Heather is sporting a ring with a Diamond on it that could have its own ZIP code.

Freddy Deeb is Out

Freddy Deeb
Freddy Deeb
Freddy Deeb is gone. He was nursing a short stack of about 6000 and went all in with {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

And was insta called by Willaim Durkee with {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

The very first card out was a {Q-Diamonds} and no help for Deeb thereafter.

"That has actually saved me £300, I was going to buy Todd Brunson dinner at the break."

Not sure what meal he would have that would cost £300, many would be more upset at the £10,000 loss but who are we to judge?

Bruel and Taylor Rumble Again

From the floor of the Empire Casino...

Patrick Bruel took down another big pot from Sarah Taylor after doubling up. The two have been shipping chips back-and-forth to each other over the past three hours. It's been more like a tennis match that a poker tournament. Every time I walk over to their table, a stack of 5,000 orange chips disappears from Bruel's stack and shows up in front of Taylor and then I return to see the same stack sitting in front of Bruel.
