Cantu and Aguiar Will Return To Play For The Bracelet

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Brandon Cantu vs. Jonathan Aguiar
Brandon Cantu vs. Jonathan Aguiar

Despite over six hours of heads-up play, the final match up between Brandon Cantu and Jonathan Aguiar has not yet reached its conclusion. The casino closed its doors at 5:00 AM CET, and, much like Event #4: €3,250 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout, the players were forced to stop for the night.

Players and tournament staff are currently unsure as to when this heads-up match will resume. Day 1b of the WSOP Europe Main Event begins on Sunday, and both Aguiar and Cantu plan on playing. Cantu insisted that the two must finish this match tomorrow while Aguiar stated that he is not interested in missing levels of the Main Event.

When the match was halted for the night, Cantu had the lead with 1.52 million in chips to Aguiar's 1.361 million.

Staff told the players that a solution will be figured out tomorrow. As soon as there is concrete information as to when play will resume, PokerNews will let you know.

Aguiar Spikes River; Scores Huge Double

Brandon Cantu's reaction when he sees the river.

Jonathan Aguiar made it 22,000 from the button and Brandon Cantu three-bet to 70,000. Aguiar flat called and a red flop fell- {8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}.

Cantu led for 75,000 only to have Aguiar raise to 270,000. Cantu three-bet to 540,000 and Aguiar sat thinking for about a minute.

"All in," said Aguiar.

"I call," proclaimed Cantu, showing {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for the nuts.

Aguiar flipped up {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} for middle set, meaning that he was drawing live.

The {J-Clubs} on the turn was of no help to him, but the {3-Hearts} drilled the river, giving him eights full of treys and the winning hand. Aguiar now has a commanding chip lead over Cantu.

Roger Hairabedian opened to 37,000 from the button and Brandon Cantu three-bet to 107,000. Hairabedian shipped all in for roughly 300,000 and Cantu called.

Hairabedian: {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Cantu: {A-Spades}{8-Clubs}

The board fell {8-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Hairabedian was forced to settle for an elimination just short of the finals for the second year in a row.

Faraz Jaka Eliminated in 4th Place (€86,087)

Jonathan Aguiar had the button. He opened with a raise to 11,000, which seemed to be the standard at this level in the match.

Faraz Jaka looked at his cards and three-bet to 27,000. Aguiar went into the tank for roughly one minute before moving out a four-bet to 60,000. Jaka announced all in and Aguiar snapped.

Aguiar: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Jaka: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The board fell {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{J-Spades} and Aguiar's kings were able to hold, sending Jaka to the rail with a €86,087 payday.

This makes Aguiar the first player to advance to the finals. Aguiar will take a stack of 1,110,500 to play either Brandon Cantu or Roger Hairabedian.

Can Jon Aguiar capture his first WSOP bracelet today?

The stage is set for the final day of Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em. By the end of the day, Brandon Cantu, Jonathan Aguiar, Faraz Jaka, or Roger Hairabedian will crowned the latest champion of the World Series of Poker Europe.

Yesterday's play saw the final sixteen players engage in the heads up portion of this tournament. Each player to reach this stage was secured a cash, but ultimately had their eyes on the top prize and the gold bracelet. Phil Hellmuth, Jennifer Tilly, Bertrand Grospellier, Mike Watson, Martin Jacobson, and Jason Mercier are just some of the names to fall short of entering the prestigious position of the final four.

Today, the semifinals will take place with Brandon Cantu playing Roger Hairabedian on one table while Faraz Jaka takes on Jonathan Aguiar on the other. The winners of those matches will go on to play one final heads up match to crown the champion.
