Break Dance

Two levels down, four to go today.

Ah, but first, a break! It's twenty minutes again, and we're headed outside to see if the weather has improved at all. Back shortly.

Molson v. MacPhee

William Molson opened to 400 under the gun, and he was called by Yasuhiro Waki and small blind Joe Serock. Big blind Kevin MacPhee squeezed in a raise to 1,600, and only Serock ducked out of the way.

The other three players saw a flop of {5-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, and MacPhee checked. Molson took his cue to bet 2,300 at the pot, and Waki quickly surrendered. MacPhee, though, took a long pause to imitate a statue. He sat rock-still for about two full minutes as Molson fidgeted and struggled to figure out where to look. MacPhee had made him squirm enough, and he finally uncapped his cards and handed them back to the dealer.

MacPhee is down a bit to 23,000.

It's A Corker

Nice double up for the cigar-chomping Hoyt Corkins. He has just doubled up to 40,000 on a {J-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {A-Clubs} board showing {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} on the end which brought a tap of the table and a "Nice hand sir" from his opponent.

Margets Keeps Her Cards Close to Her Chest

Leo Margets, who was the last woman standing in the 2009 WSOP Main Event, is currently on 35,000. She raised her opponent's lead of 1,600 to 3,300 on a {2-Hearts}{J-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} board, before firing out for 6,100 on the {4-Clubs} river.

After her opponent reluctantly relinquished his hand, her tablemates begged for her to reveal, but the Spanish starlett didn't divulge, simply sliding her cards into the muck and moving on to the next hand.

Seed Cedes Pot

James Dempsey opened to 500 from UTG+1 and got called by Brandon Cantu, Joe Beevers and Huck Seed before the big blind reraised to 3,500.

Dempsey, Cantu and Beevers all folded fairly sharpish but Seed was taking his time.

"You can't represent much!" laughed the big blind.

"No, but I think I have the best hand," Seed replied, "I can have ace-king or queens."

"You can never have queens!" the big blind continued, "maybe ace-king...top of your range."

At this point, Seed began to play with three orange 5k chips in his hand and it looked as though he would throw them in the middle, "I think it's a gamble, do I want to gamble? Maybe you fold? I don't know..."

"You want to bet on that?" said the big blind confidently.

"I don't know," admitted Seed, "maybe you fold ace-queen."

The former Main Event champion agonised for a little longer before eventually folding his hand.

"You show, I show," said the big blind.

Seed refused though, "I want to feel stupid, not look stupid."

"I was calling a shove," his opponent claimed, "I had the second nuts."

Eames Pummelled

In a good way - his stack has done nothing but rise in the first two levels, topping 38,000 recently. However he found that the massage he was receiving became so vigorous (that sort of super-fast chop thing up and down the spine) that he tried to pause before threbetting preflop to give his masseuse time to move on to something less disruptive. No, she wasn't going to move, and Eames got giggles from his table as he said, "E-e-eigh-t-t-een-hu-u-n-n-n-d red," throwing out 2k.

Only Andy Bloch called him, and they saw a {J-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} flop. It looked like neither player was interested in this, or the {9-Diamonds} turn, but the checking ended on the {5-Clubs} river when Eames bet out 3,200 and Bloch passed.

Cernuto Pays Cowboys to Fix Mercier's Stack

Isabelle Mercier has re-plumped her stack over 30k after taking down probably the maximum bet possible on the river from John Cernuto. I caught this hand only during the river dwell-time with the board standing {3-Spades} {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {6-Clubs}. Mercier had bet out 5,125 which looked pretty much like a pot-sized bet. Cernuto counted it out, measured it against his remaining 20k, and thought for a while before finally tossing in the chips. He mucked, though, on seeing her {K-Clubs} {K-Hearts}.

Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

Roberto Romanello is about as happy as a penguin in a microwave at the moment after becoming an early casualty in this year's World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. But when he looks back at the hand histories, he will feel he did little wrong.

Still reeling from his earlier set-over-set encounter that ate up over half his stack, Romanello opened up to 550 from the button only to be three-bet by Faraz Jaka to 1,500 in the small blind.

Romanello spent little time in making a raise and increasing the price of poker to 4,525. Jaka asked for a count (Romanello had around 15,000 back), mulled over his options for a minute, before dipping into his 23,000 stack and putting his opponent all in. Romanello took one last peak at his cards, nodded his head and announced, "I call."

Cards on their backs and Romanello was in commanding shape with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} versus the {A-Hearts}{4-Spades} of Jaka, the latter either believing Romanello's four-bet range in this situation to be light or having picked up some sort of incorrect read as Romanello was awaiting a decision.

Either way, Jaka's misstep went unpunished, the flop coming {10-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} to place him into the lead. As the ace hit the felt, a gutted Romanello yelped as if receiving a punch to the stomach and quickly rose from his chair with a "I run so bad" look of disgust plastered across his face.

The {10-Spades} turn and {3-Clubs} river sealed the deal, and Romanello was gone. "Good luck," he politely offered through gritted teeth, but it was obvious that he'll feel the pain of this wound for a few days yet.

Jaka, meanwhile, jumped right up to 45,000, and with his talent and results, could be a genuine threat as he we head towards the close of this second level.

Pierre Canali: still out in front
Pierre Canali: still out in front

Pierre Canali tangles with Scott Fischman yet again, getting it heads up from a fourway bunch preflop who'd paid 450 to see {5-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} with a bet of 1,100. With just Fischman along for the ride, Canali checked the {Q-Spades} turn, but bet 1,500 on the {A-Hearts} river. Into Expressionless Dwell Mode for Fischman, who finally tossed in the call, to be rewarded by an instant muck from Canali before he could be asked to show down by the dealer. Fischman attempted to do the same, but at gentle prompting flipped up his {4-Diamonds} {3-Spades}.

A Shorr Thing

Shannon Shorr check-called an 800 bet on the {J-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {5-Spades} flop before check-raising the 1,800 bet to 4,900 on the {A-Hearts} turn to elicit an instant fold from his opponent.

Shorr is sharing a table with both Scott Montgomery and Jeff Lisandro, it doesn't look like there are many easy spots here.
