Offical Day 2b Chip Counts Released

Day 2b of the 2008 WSOP is in the books, and the chip leader at the end of the session is Peter Biebel at 531,000. Biebel topped the 842 players who survived Day 2b action, ahead of Alex Outhred, and they'll start Day 3 action in second and third place, respectively, behind Day 2a and overall leader Brian Schaedlich. The top ten players from the Day 2b session are as follows:

Day 2 Complete

"Congratulations on making Day 3 of the Main Event," came the booming voice over the PA system, marking the end of play for Day 2. Redraw slips are being handed out before the chips are re-counted and bagged up for an overnight soak.

Today started with 2,379 players looking to chip up for a deep run, though we only have about 855 of them left when all is said and done. Alex Outhred appears to be our Day 2b chip leader, finishing up with 486,800 in chips. Some of the notable names that will not be with us tomorrow: Michael DeMichele, Brian Townsend, Amnon Filipi, Eric Lynch, John Juanda, Clonie Gowen, Shannon Elizabeth, Carlos Mortensen, Phil Laak, Joe Hachem, and defending champion Jerry Yang.

A number of big names are still alive though, and will be here tomorrow to do some more work. Among them are Victor Ramdin, Nenad Medic, Phil Hellmuth, Jean-Robert Bellande, Jeff Madsen, John D'Agostino, Phil Gordon, Shawn Sheikhan, Gus Hansen, and Mike Matusow.

Play will begin with right around 1,300 players tomorrow at 12:00pm on the dot. That means we have about 650 players to lose before we hit the money, and there's a chance we'll be there by this time tomorrow. We hope you'll join us then for Day 3 of the 2008 Main Event!

Big Stacks Clash With Set Over Set

With the board reading on the turn, Steven Chung checked, Steve Goosen made a pot-sized bet of 50,000 and Chung called. The river was the . Chung checked, Goosen bet 60,000 and Chung callled.

Chung showed for a set, but Goosen had turned a higher set with . Goosen raked in the monster pot, increasing his stack to 363,000. Chung was down to 206,000.

Cantu Eliminates David Irish

Preflop, from middle position, Brandon Cantu made it 4,000 to go. David Irish, in late position, raised it up to 11,000 and Cantu made the call. The flop ran 4-4-X and Irish led out for 15,000 after Cantu checked. Cantu fired 45,000 back and Irish shoved all in. Cantu called and showed for flopped trips while Irish turned over pocket queens. The fours held for Cantu and Irish was eliminated.

Outhred Getting Way Out There

Alex Outhred just won another huge pot, adding to his gawdy stack. He's way up to 481,000.

Deja Vu All Over Again

There was a famous hand played out on High Stakes Poker where Daniel Negreanu flopped a set of sixes, Gus Hansen flopped a set of fives, and Gus turned quads to win a very, very big pot from Daniel.

We just had almost the same situation play out on Table 1. The flop came and Asher Derei, holding pocket fives, called his opponent's bet. He did the same when another five fell on the turn. When his opponent bet again on the river Derei moved all in and got the call. His opponent turned over pocket sixes and as players from other tables rushed over to see the carnage one player saw his Main Event come to a cruel end and Derei saw his stack rise to 181,000.

He Fought the Law and the Law Won

With the board showing and 25,000 already in the pot, a middle-position player raised to 5,000, and Bobby Law reraised all in behind for 34,200 total. Law's opponent called and showed . Law turned over his .

The turn was the and the river the , and Law is now up to 95,000.

It's Rain-ing Threes

Hevad Khan was all in on the turn on a board of and was called by an opponent holding for top pair top kicker. However, his opponent was drawing dead as Hevad held pocket threes for quads.

Hevad is up to 90,000 after the hand.

Tiffany Michelle Fighting Back

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier opened the pot with a raise to 3,100. Alex Outhred called from the button before the small blind moved all in for 25,000. Next to act was Tiffany Michelle, and she reraised all in herself for about 88,000 total. Everyone else ducked out, and the cards of the two contenders were turned over:

The came right in the door, but the other two flop cards were , giving Tiffany a set of queens. The turn and river came and respectively, and she earns the pot, sending a player packing in the process.

Tiffany Michelle started the day off on the right foot, but she took a tumble after suffering a bad beat and was down to 8,000 at one point. She has been clawing back all night though, and she finds herself back up to a healthy 120,000 chips.
