In a Battle of the Blinds, Josephy Emerges the Victor

Cliff Josephy - Day 1a
Cliff Josephy - Day 1a
Action folded around to the small blind player and he raised to 3,500. Cliff Josephy, who had his opponent well covered, moved all in from the big blind and the small blind called for his last 30,000. The players showed:

Josephy: {9-Hearts} {9-Clubs}
Opponent: {K-Clubs} {K-Spades}

Josephy, in an attempt to be a nice guy, started to chant "king...king...king!" as the dealer ran the flop. There was no king as the flop came {A-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {9-Spades}. Josephy caught up, and in a big way. The turn and river fell the {7-Clubs} and {J-Diamonds} respectively and Josephy stacked the pot.

He climbed to just over 230,000 chips on the hand.

Lucky Sevens for Van

We came into the hand on the turn, with the board reading {7-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} and with a player in middle position raising to 11,200. Van Nguyen made it 24,000 to go and her opponent moved all in for 48,000. Van called and showed pocket sevens for a flopped set, while her opponent showed {K-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} for top pair. Another queen on the river gave Van a boat and sent her opponent to the rail.

After the hand, Men 'the Master' Nguyen came by and said, "You knocked someone out? Did you say anything?" Van said no and Men continued, "You should have said, 'All you can eat, baby!'" He then addressed the table, "Guys, this is my wife. You better be careful."

Johnny Chan Sends a Player Home

A middle-position player made it 3,300 to play and Johnny Chan called from the big blind.

The flop came {A-Spades} {J-Clubs} {4-Hearts} and Chan check-called his opponent's all-in bet of 16,000. The players showed:

Chan: {4-Clubs} {4-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Hearts} {8-Hearts}

The turn and river were blanks and Chan took down the pot. He trimmed the field by one and chipped up to just over 90,000 in the process.

Hwang Time

After a middle position raise to 3,200, Bob Hwang reraised to 9,800 from the small blind and was called.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Hwang bet 14,000. His opponent pushed all in for nearly 40,000 more, and Hwang made the call.

Hwang showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} for top pair-top kicker. His opponent had {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for middle pair. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and the river the {7-Spades}, and Hwang is now up to 148,000.

Rain-ing on His Parade

Hevad Khan called a player's all-in preflop holding {A-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. His opponent, who held pocket queens, managed to flop a set and Khan was drawing thin. Khan failed to improve and is down to 34,000 after the hand.

Bruce Buffer Eliminated

Bruce Buffer was all in preflop with pocket queens and was up against his opponent's A-K. Everything looked great for Buffer, until the {K-Hearts} fell on the river and sent him to the rail.

David Stratmann on the Climb

David Stratmann raised to 4,000 from early position and the big blind made the call.

The two saw a flop of {6-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} and the big blind check-called a bet of 4,000 from Stratman. The {4-Spades} hit the turn and both players checked.

The river fell the {A-Clubs} and the big blind check-called yet again, this time a bet of 12,000.

Stratmann showed {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} and the big blind mucked. Stratmann climbed to just over 240,000 chips on the hand.

Stann Hangs On

Dave Stann and Bertrand Grospellier are at it again. This time Stann, as a short stack, moved in preflop. Grospellier made the call, but his {K-Clubs} {J-Hearts} was dominated by Stann's {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}. Neither player improved on a queen-high board. Stann doubled up to 20,000.

Henning Granstad Takes a Hit

Preflop, Henning Granstad raised to 3,500 and a player from the button raised to 8,500. Granstad called.

On a flop of {Q-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {6-Hearts}, Granstad checked to his opponent, who bet out 12,000. Granstad raised to 50,000, and his opponent went all in for 72,300 total. Granstad called.

Granstad showed {Q-Diamonds} {6-Spades} and his opponent showed {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}.

Only running sixes would give Granstad the hand. The {5-Clubs} on the turn sealed the hand, making the {5-Spades} on the river irrelevant.

After the hand, Granstad moved down to 107,400 in chips.
