Day 3 Done & Dusted

Daniel Negreanu - up there
Daniel Negreanu - up there

And so, we are down to 24.

He was chip leader at the start of the day, and he is not far off at the end of it. Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu finished up the day with 1.954 million. If he goes all the way and takes the €700,000 top spot, he will just pip Phil Ivey to snatch back his place at the very top of the all-time tournament money list.

The only man beating Negreanu right now is online qualifier Konstantinos Nanos with 2.007 million. His biggest career live cash so far has been for €7,240 - first place in the €400 Turbo Bounty side event at EPT Tallinn - so even a min-cash here would have constituted his biggest ever live cash. He's had some poor EPT fortune - he bubbled EPT Berlin last year - but has enjoyed considerable success online, winning over $200,000.

Both of our chip leaders are going to have a tough Day 4 to get through. Still in the running are Negreanu's fellow Team PokerStars Pros Martin Hruby (Czech Republic) and Toni Judet (newly signed for Romania), as well as French powerhouses Bruno Launais and Jacques Zaicik, and British old school poker legend Surinder Sunar.

We'll be back at the Kursalon tomorrow from noon CET when our remaining 24 players will whittle themselves right down to an eight-handed final table. This is not a Day 4 you want to miss.

Victorino Day Four For Torres

Victorino Torres
Victorino Torres

Finishing in 25th, and so bringing today's action to a close, is Victorino Torres. He'd had a bumpy ride to the last few tables but was actually cruising above average when one key hand dropped his stack to the point of no return. He ran {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} preflop into {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts} of Luca Cainelli and doubled up the Italian, leaving himself just 70k. This made it into a pot quickly - he moved in preflop with {Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} but Kirill Zapletin held {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} to his left and made short work of him.

With Torres and his hat gone, the field is about 80% less vibrant, but will be coming back tomorrow to play for ever increasing prizes.

Popetschnig Out

Franz Markus Popetschnig also finds himself short of Day Four by a whisker after moving all in on the button with {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. He'd picked a bad moment, however, because initial raiser Michael Eiler had {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}, looked him up, and before you could say Franz Markus Popetschnig the {K-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs} board had sent him to the rail.

Busto Ville

Ville Mattila
Ville Mattila

Finishing in 27th, with a prize of €13,500, was Ville Mattila, who having played with quiet but aggressive determination all day ended up racing out with a big hand. Umberto Vitagliano opened for 27k and Mattila on the button made it 75k. Over to big blind Konstantinos Nanos who fourbet to 210k. Vitagliano made them wait for a while before passing, and Mattila moved all in for over 450k. He was snapcalled and turned over {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}, up against the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} of Nanos.

The board came a decisive {J-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Nanos shouted, "NEEEEEH!" and gave a triple two-handed fist-pump punch while a disappointed Mattila left the tournament area.

Laun Games

We got there just in time to see Andreas Wiese calling a fairly chunky bet (around 70,000, by our reckoning) from Bruno Launais on the turn of a {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Spades}{j-Spades} board, and a river was dealt - the {3-Clubs}. Launais announced all in for 153,000, and Wiese commenced to tank, as the refrain from Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry Be Happy, currently being used to alert players in the side events that their blinds are going up, came on across the speakers in the ballroom.

Wiese tanked up for some time, but eventually folded, dropping to 950,000 in the process. Launais, one of the most well-respected players in France who finalled EPT Deauville in 2009 and made a WSOP final this summer, finished the hand on 480,000.

Elimination Station

Just a recap on some of the latest eliminations as we approach that magical 24 player mark that will signify the end of play for today. We are currently sat at 27 players.

Elimination 1 - Pokerstars Qualifier Wolfgang Beyer

Tonio Röder opened under the gun making it 28,000 to play and Team Pokerstars Pro Martin Hruby made the call a few seats to his left. Beyer then made the squeeze from the Button pushing all-in for 270,000. Röder folded and the action was on Hruber. You could tell that it wasn't an easy decision for the Team Pokerstars Pro who took his time to look Beyer up and down before finally making the call.

Beyer: {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}

Hruby: {j-Spades} {j-Diamonds}

The board did not help either party and Hruby moved his stack up to 1.4 million.

Elimination 2 - Charles Combes

Combes shoved all-in from the button and Jose Severino called from the Big Blind.

Combes: {7-Spades} {7-Diamonds}

Severino: {a-Clubs} {10-Clubs}

Board: {a-Spades} {2-Spades} {9-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {8-Spades}

Severino adds Combes 140,000 to his stack

Lots & Lotze

Martin Hruby
Martin Hruby

Ramin Hajiyev seemed to have opened and Martin Hruby reraised before Matthias Lotze pushed from the button. Either way, Hajiyev was folding and the other two were on their backs when we arrived.

Lotze: {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}
Hruby: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Board: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds}

Lotze's aces held to double him to 350,000. Hruby nodded and tapped as the table as he took the hit - he's still in pretty good shape on 1.05 million after that.
