Day 1b Completed

Day 1b is No More

Day 1b of the PokerStars.net NAPT Los Angeles is in the books after nine levels. Another 373 players added their names to the registration list by the time the window closed this afternoon to bring the total field up to a respectable 701 for this inaugural stop in the City of Angels. When the clock ticked down to double zero, it was Kim Frederiksen bagging up the big stack to conclude an action-packed day of card playing.

Things went well for the North American Team PokerStars Pros today. Joe Cada was recently freed of the “Defending WSOP Champion” title, and he enjoyed a quick rise to the top of the leaderboard this afternoon. His bag is filled with 78,900 chips at the end of the night. Canadians Greg DeBora, Marcello del Grosso, Anh Van Nguyen, and Daniel Negreanu all survived their opening flight as well.

The chip lead changed hands several times during the last orbits of the night, and Hafiz Khan was the one of the final beneficiaries of the late-day shenanigans. It was during the last three hands of the night that Khan's stack ballooned to chip leader status when a {6-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} flop drove some serious action. The monster pot we just posted pushed Khan into a momentary lead, but Frederiksen wrestled that lead away at the end of the night, leapfrogging up to 237,000.

That's good enough to lead the Day 2 field tomorrow, just edging out Day 1a big stack Nick Grippo (235,100) for those honors. The ~325 survivors will be back here tomorrow at 1:00pm for the second day and the push on towards the money.

We'll see you then.

Monster Pot

Allen Kessler was kind enough to wave us over to a pot developing at his table. When we arrived we discoverd about 43,000 in the pot and a board reading {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Hafiz Khan was first to act and bet 25,000, which his sole opponent on the button called.

When the river fell the {10-Spades}, Khan moved all in for 57,700 and the button snap-called. Khan showed {3-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and the button simply mucked. Khan took down the pot with his flopped flush and looks to be the chip leader with 205,000.

Negreanu Folds to Aces

The lady in the cutoff raised to 3,100 only to have the button reraise to 8,100. Daniel Negreanu was in the small blind and must have liked his hand as he raised to 18,100. The cutoff folded and the button lined up some chips, raising 20,000 on top. Negreanu insta-mucked and the button showed {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}.

Negreanu is still in good shape with 77,000.

Richey Getting Chips

Yann Dion raised to 2,200 from middle position and then Danny Suied came back at him with a three-bet to 6,200 from the cutoff. Brett Richey put in a four-bet to 14,500 and that was good enough to get folds from everyone and win the pot.

On the next hand, action folded to Richey in the cutoff seat and he raised to 2,000. The player on the button made the call and the flop came down {Q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Richey bet 3,300 and was called.

The turn brought the {10-Hearts} to pair the board and both players checked. The {Q-Hearts} put another pair on board on the river and Richey fired 5,600. That was good enough to win him the pot. Richey's up to about 60,000 now.

Senti Sliding

Jason Senti has tried to pick up some chips here in the last level of the night, but he's still somewhat short with just 23,000 chips.

Senti raised to 2,400 and then Brett Richey three-bet to 8,100. Senti couldn't stand the heat and then folded.

A few hands later, Senti opened another pot with a raise to 2,400. This time he was called in two spots, the cutoff seat and the big blind. After the flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, action checked to the cutoff and he fired 2,700. The big blind and Senti both folded.

Senti was able to maneuver his way all the way to the November Nine this year without ever having much of a chip stack. It looks like he may be working some more short-stack magic going into Day 2 here in Los Angeles.

New Chip Leader

We got to Nick Binger's table when there was already around 100,000 in the pot and a board reading {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. We could tell right away that this was the type of hand that even Jimmy Fricke would get excited about.

Max Katz was first to act and bet a modest 15,000 which Binger called. Katz showed {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} and Binger mucked. It was a huge pot that saw Katz vault to 198,000, which looks to be good enough for the chip lead.

Dion Takes One

Phil Laak raised from middle position to 2,500 and Yann Dion three-bet to 7,000 from the hijack seat. Laak called and the flop came down {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. Laak checked and Dion fired 7,500 to take the pot from Laak.

Montalbano Gone as Laak Flops Straight

Phil Laak raised to 2,600 and the hijack seat made the call. Herbie Montalbano called from the small blind as well. The flop came down {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Montalbano moved all in for 15,400. Laak called and the hijack seat also called.

The turn brought the {6-Clubs} and both players checked. The river completed the board with the {7-Hearts} and both players checked again. Laak showed the {5-Spades}{4-Spades} for a straight while the hijack tabled the {A-Spades}{9-Spades} for a missed straight draw. Montalbano only showed the {10-Diamonds} and mucked his hand, hitting the rail.
